Interviews
Kiara Hunter – Sofia
Q. What are some of the recent projects that you’ve been working on?
A. My most recent project I’ve worked on was Alien Incursion. It’s an independent feature where I play Park Ranger Kelly, the lead role who helps campers escape from the clutches of an alien race that comes down from the sky in a meteorite. There’s also the government bad guys who complicate things and my character teams up with her estranged father who lives in the woods and is an ex-military expert that knows what’s going on. My character is stubborn and tough through and through but becomes an unlikely hero amongst the melee. It just got picked up by the Sci-Fi Channel in the States!
Q. What can you tell us about the premise of the film Sofia and about your character?
A. This true story, based on actual events, is about a journalist who embarks on a quest to find out more about prostitution in India since her own mother died as the result of the profession. Finding no one interesting enough, the journalist comes upon “Sofia,” an anomaly of sorts. She’s a high end prostitute, who through unfortunate events, becomes the focus of the story. She comes from a higher caste class of Indians, being half Indian and half Jewish from Iran. Well educated, and of course very beautiful in a sensual and erotic way, her story is that of both intrigue and shock. Sofia is not like the usual “woman of the night,” being sophisticated, intelligent and very classy looking. Sofia’s unfortunate turn of events in her pampered life gets turned upside down with events she has no control over. She is forced to survive doing something that originally she accepts and perhaps even loves, though she finds out later, unfortunate circumstances are in place to change her life forever.
Q. What made you want to be a part of this project?
A. I’ve always been one as a more controversial type of actress. Not afraid of taking risks and getting my feet wet with projects that many women would not play. This one intrigued me because of the strength and vulnerability of Sofia. She is an unfortunate victim who turns it around and makes the best of a situation where she has no choices. Her courage, charm and wit throughout the film is what I really liked. An unlikely hero, I guess you could say.
Q. Do you have a really memorable moment from filming?
A. I have not shot Sofia yet but I start November 24th and will continue up to Christmas filming in New Delhi and the surrounding areas. I’m sure I will have many “moments” with this film and would love to tell you about it next time! I will also be journaling my experience on my web site www.kiarahunter.com.
Q. What about your role was challenging for you?
A. I have to say, the most challenging part for me is going to be the long dialogues between Sofia and Bilquis, the journalist who interviews her at length. Some of my dialogue is very very long!
Q. Why should viewers take the time to check out the film?
A. This film will personify prostitution as having a face. It is a character driven story that will give the viewer another way of looking at the business of selling sex. Behind every woman/man in this profession, there is a story to tell, each one different, each one unique. Sofia’s story, being that it is a true story, brings a human quality to a vocation where most have no patience and view to judge it as such. I believe this film will have people walking away with an more empathetic view of this misunderstood industry and what it entails.
Q. You’ve done acting and producing, is there anything else you’d like to try your hand at?
A. I don’t know if I have any more time to add to my list of projects! I have been working hard on my Sci-Fi Bladerunner/Mad Max/Joan of Arc Comic Strip, Huntergirl, very hard and getting it to the point of publishing it early 2007 while looking to attend Comic Con in San Diego next year. I also have a music career and have released a pop/dance CD “We Can Play” several years back while touring with the hot British Group “Atomic Kittens” in twenty-two cites in Europe. I am now starting to write again with my original Producer, Ian Prince, a Grammy Award Winner. I look forward to putting my new material up on my web site and perhaps even tour again if the time presents itself.
Q. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
A. I’m so boring when it comes to that. I am what you would call a video game junkie! I have been playing video games for many many years and feel I probably have an addiction! I love first person action stories and currently I am a huge 360 XBOX fan! I probably have about a dozen titles. My favorite games are Half-Life, the Godfather, Splinter Cell, Hitman, Medal of Honor and Need for Speed. However, right now I’m totaling into Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 – what a game! I also enjoy the outdoors (I’m an avid snow skier, golfer and runner) and love yoga and reading.
Q. Do you have a latest obsession? Are you into any particular book, sport, music group or activity?
A. My latest craze is golf! I just picked it up this year and am quite taken with it – it’s so more than just athleticism but combines both mind and agility to make a good game. I never realized how fun it was and after hitting some eighteen’s under one hundred, I got the bug! I am also big into India stuff right now, books, music, movies, you name it – I love the research!
Q. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A. Well, all I can say to the fans that have been with me over the years, thank you for your sweet letters and words of encouragement. You are truly one of the reasons I love doing what I do! To do something I am so passionate about and have it reflected back to me that others enjoyed my work – is truly phenomenal. To all my new fans, I appreciate you taking the time and effort to read up on me and what I do for a living. It’s not always easy being in this industry but having supporters and friends from all over the world makes me feel that much warmer inside and truly makes this journey worthwhile. Thank you so much!
