Killing Eve – Still Got It
After last week’s reunion with Villanelle, we watch as Eve tries to fix her relationship with Niko who isn’t exactly open to a new start. Meanwhile, The Twelve would love nothing more than to drive a wedge in between Eve and Villanelle and Dasha has just the plan to do it. Cut into six separate stories highlighting each character integral to this story, Still Got it turns a birthday reunions into a bloody awful surprise.
Niko
Poor Niko (Owen McDonnell), all he wanted was a normal life with his wife and instead he’s been forced to flee the London for a hide out in Poland. When we first see him he’s taking a selfie along a rural roadside, happy to be living the simple life away from the chaos of his wife and Villanelle. Now he spends his days making bread deliveries in his small hometown, far away from the any reminders of his past life. Unfortunately, and thanks to cell phone service, he can’t forget the trauma he left behind because Eve’s incoming texts are a constant reminder. No amount of football and beers at the pub can erase the torment she put him through, but he tries his best to ignore her messages.
Eve
In London we find Eve (Sandra Oh) waking up on the couch at the Bitter Pill offices and our favorite full-time spy and part-time dumpling expert has really let herself go. With a sniff of her smelly arm pits and quick public bathroom wash up, Eve is ready to get back to work on Kenny’s case, much to her co-workers dismay. Obsession make people do crazy things and throwing your dirty panties in Bear’s (Turlough Convery) office bin while digging through his breakfast is just one of the few charming examples of Eve’s one track mind. If its not related to The Twelve and Villanelle, she doesn’t have time for it…even bathing. Without the cat and mouse chase, Polastri is a mess and even her birthday can’t pull her out of this funk. That is epecially after a cake in the shape of a bus is delivered to her new office. It’s a confectionery reminder of the kiss she planted on Villanelle! Eve panics and throws the cake off the roof of the building and as it splatters on the pavement you can’t help but think of Kenny and his untimely demise. After offending her co-workers with her new homeless chic look and destroying that delicious cake, Jamie (Danny Sapani) offers Eve a place to stay. These two seem to hit it off which is probably a dangerous choice on his part since the men in Eve’s life never seem to live very long.
Later that night Eve and Jamie are at home having some drinks and a bite to eat as her new boss gets an upfront and closer look at what makes her tick. Wondering if she ever has fun, the two decide to share life stories with Eve FINALLY admitting that she drove her husband crazy with her infidelity…and she doesn’t mean that one off with Hugo. “I left a man to die so I could save a psychopath,” she admits but Eve isn’t the only one with a checkered past. Jamie shares some of the things he’s been through and helps Eve see that “…You’re the only self -loathing a**hole in the room.”
After drinks and confessions, Eve goes to bed with her teddy bear gift courtesy of the psychopath she thinks ruined her life. She whispers in the stuffed animal’s ear, “What do you want from me?”And that’s when her phone buzzes in the nightstand. It’s Niko responding to her earlier text with the roadside selfie and along with it a hope that Eve can make things right with him. A day later Eve arrives in Poland and finds Niko, looking surprised to see his ex-wife pulling up to a farm belonging to one of his clients.
Konstantin
Back in Moscow Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) catches up with his daughter Irina (Yuli Lagodinsky) and orders her to skip school and spend some time with him. As usual, she is unimpressed with his technique but agrees because it includes ice cream. The two talk about Irina’s mother and her new crook of a boyfriend. Irina finally the girl asks her father if she can stay with him. Much like he has with Villanelle, these two have a push and pull relationship but in its foundation there is love. It is why Irina gets angry when he refuses to take her back to London with him. It’s too dangerous and for her. But isn’t that the whole point? Irina might be annoying, but the girl is not stupid. She knows the dangers of her father’s job and she doesn’t want to lose him. Without coming straight out and admitting it, Irina doesn’t want this ice cream date to be their last. Little does she know Konstantin is playing every side of this game to make sure they all make it out of this in one piece. It’s a risk with a huge pay off that a precocious child his just wouldn’t understand.
After his daughter storms off in a Russian huff, Konstantin heads to Charles widow’s (Rebecca Saire) house. The woman is grieving and divulges some very interesting information that Konstantin can’t ignore. It seems Charles figured out who took the missing six million dollars and he left behind a clue in the form of a letter and some computer files. In the event of his untimely demise, he asked his wife to send the files to the police. She never did and instead called Konstantin. Right off the bat we know Bertha Kruger had no idea the kind of people her husband worked with, but she knew Charles trusted Konstantin. Whatever is in those files is enough for him to put on his friendly and caring face and offer her help. She can hand over those files and Konstantin promises he will take care of everything…which is a nice way to say “ask Villanelle to kill this woman and tie up any loose ends.” Konstantin has never been a killer by choice, and he isn’t about to start with the grieving widow.
Villanelle
In Spain Villanelle is (Jodie Comer) celebrating Eve’s birthday by whipping up a homemade cake while rocking out to some party tunes. Dasha (Harriet Walter) shows up to rain on her parade by making it clear she doesn’t approve of her antics in London; namely that kissing encounter with Eve. The Twelve are always watching and they’ve been so impressed with her recent kills that they want to meet with her about a promotion. This gets Villanelle’s attention, but there is a catch. Dasha needs her to stay in Spain. No trips until she has met with “them.” Villanelle is ecstatic over getting one step closer to becoming a Keeper. She tosses Eve’s cake in the trash and goes on a celebratory shopping spree. With her hands full of full of bags of fashionista finds, she runs into Konstantin who has an offer for her he knows she can’t refuse. The two climb into an aerial tram high above Barcelona and talk about Eve’s failed marriage and Villanelle’s big promotion. Konstantin laughs that off and hands her an envelope containing a picture of her family. He will tell her where they are if she kills Charles’s widow. Having searched for any clues to her forgotten past, Villanelle has no choice but to defy Dasha’s wishes and take this woman out.
Nicely as Konstantin requested, Villanelle turns murder into a playful game of tag in the Kruger’s tulip garden. Pretending to be a landscaper, the hiccuping assassin manages to make the weepy widow smile right before she strangles the life out of her. It’s a delightfully lethal romp that’s exactly what Konstantin needed her to do. The six million loose ends are thankfully tied up, but at what cost and for whom? Was this to protect The Twelve or to keep him and his loved ones safe?
Carolyn
Cut to the fifth focus of the episode and we find Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) and Paul (Steve Pemberton) discussing work over brunch. The shooting and Charles’ death was a mistake that landed in Paul’s lap and It’s something Carolyn thinks wouldn’t have happened if she had been left in charge. To make it up to her, she wants Paul to move aside and allow her back to work. She also makes it apparent that she could do without all the sympathy Paul and even her daughter continue to offer her. Work is where she can honor her son by finding his killer and nobody seems to understand that. Staying focused on the case is how she processes her loss and this is something that is completely foreign to Geraldine (Gemma Whelan). Crying and literally begging her mother to get in touch with her emotions, Carolyn brushes her daughter off and leaves her in a heap on the floor. These two are oil and water so it’s a good thing Geraldine secretly has Konstantin to lean on, something that seems to rattle her mother when she spots him leaving their home.
Dasha
The Twelve is always watching and that’s why one of them, a power suit wearing woman named Helene (Camille Cottin), shows up to interrupt Dasha’s swim. Helene is there to remind her to keep Villanelle in line. “They” know about her obsession with Eve and think it’s interfering with her work. Dasha knows this unrequited love is the catalyst for Villanelle’s disobedience so she offers to kill Eve, but the woman tells her not to. Instead, she asks her to come up with a creative way to drive a wedge between them. Something that will throw cold water on their simmering preoccupation with each other. That wedge Dasha finds in Poland, in a killer set up that will end any chances for an Eve and Villanelle pairing.
Dressed as a local woman waiting for a delivery, Niko shows up expecting to see one of his usual clients but instead finds her “friend” waiting for him. He has no idea this woman is an assassin that fed her “friend” to her own pigs! Dasha has been following Niko around from work to pub for quite some time and being the pro that she is she has managed to snag his roadside selfie and send it to Eve! That’s right, Niko never sent his ex that text and Eve is certainly walking into Dasha’s trap. At the farm, dressed in her best babushka, she waits for Niko who agreed to fix the friend’s barn door. The timing could not have been better. As she ties a love letter from Villanelle to a pitchfork, Eve pulls up in a cab! Waving to a very confused looking Niko, Eve approaches just as a hidden Dasha drives the forked weapon through the back of Niko’s throat! Helpless, Eve watches as her ex falls to the ground and takes his last breath. Another person she loves has died and all the evidence will point to Villanelle.
Speaking of the assassin, as Niko lies dead in a Polish barn Villanelle exits a train and something pushes her to grab her neck. She shakes off the paranormal vibes and we realize she’s back in Russia and on the road to reuniting with her family. Considering how things are headed with Eve, Dasha and Konstantin this family might be the only people left to offer her the love she’s been searching for…as long as they can put up with her penchant for drama and murder. Let the family fun times begin!
