King Soloman – Everything 2020
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My music is like a combination of old school east coast hip hop with a touch of southern trap.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Jay-Z, Big Pun, Anime, J.Cole
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Everything 2020.”
A) The year of 2020 will go down in history as one of the most chaotic years of human history. There was a lot of emotion, and people couldn’t handle the changes in society, myself included. “Everything 2020” is my way of showcasing what life was like during those moments. It truly is one of the most relatable songs I’ve ever created.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) Like I just mentioned, it’s because the track is so relatable. My fans really get a glimpse into my life, and it connects us because of how vulnerable the track is. The nations balance was out of whack, everything was going wrong, and for a minute no one knew what the future would be like. All these real emotions and instances really stimulate the listener and make them feel grateful we got through the pain.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) I think the video showcases the message almost to perfection. My director Tariq Allen really had such an open mind, and you can see the artistic development as the video progresses. I guarantee you will understand the message instantly after like ten seconds of watching the video.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) The song writing process is different for each track. It really all depends on the opportunity. For this track I simply listened to the beat and freestyles the lyrics. After five minutes I wrote them down, formed the chorus and put it all together. In terms of lyrics, I don’t necessarily need music to write lyrics, but it helps to have it. Sometimes I write lyrics just to express myself and when I hear a beat if those lyrics match the vibe, I will use them for the song. Other times I use the beat from the very beginning and write a song.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) When it comes to production I work best being in the room with the producer and creating everything from scratch. Having my hand in the production as you say. Working on the beat and lyrics at the same time, that’s my ideal situation and key for me to make the best music possible. However, it’s not always that easy to be in the same room with my producers since we all don’t live next to each other.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) I’m working on a lot of new music and I can guarantee you can expect an album in 2022.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) My favorite performance was at el jam in Miami because the energy was amazing. The crowd was lively, and it was a great night for me. I really enjoyed it because that was the first time I free styled with a live band. Another performance was in Brooklyn NY at the Revel Relations One Year Anniversary event. This was significant for me because it was my first performance in my hometown.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Honestly, I’m looking to collaborate with Kosha Dillz, a hip hop artist based out of NYC. I feel like the energy we both have would be great for a track and I wanna make that happen this year.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Currently, I’ve been listening to Russ’s new album Chomp 2. His flow is crazy and the way he keeps it real on the track is admirable. He got a style that is very unique and he’s an independent artist. He is one of the best in the game right now.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media is important because we as a society make it important. Truthfully, I don’t like it, but because I have the dopest fans and support I make an effort to keep them updated and respond to them. I’m always grateful when fans, followers, or people reach out to show love or ask questions and I encourage everyone to engage with me.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you for giving me a chance. I appreciate you for listening to my music every day and supporting my brand. None of this would be possible without you and I mean that. If you are still listening to NYC 2 MIA, then go bump wish me well for the one time. Much love.
