Koilos – Teeth

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) A good mix of traditional Nu metal with modern djent influence.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Too many to name! Mostly those older nu metal bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit and Coal Chamber. But we also take a lot of influence from modern bands such as Attila, Volumes, Spiritbox and a bit of other modern metalcore.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Teeth.”

A) “Teeth” was the last song we wrote on the batch of four that we have coming out soon. It takes a bit more influence from modern metal than our other songs I would say. It’s about being beaten down and still rolling with the punches regardless.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) So, far from the reception, a lot of people like the chorus of the song. It’s big and captive, and easy to sing/play along with. People enjoy the rapping as well; I think that’s our biggest advantage over other bands in our space. And we always try to give a fun breakdown for the fans.

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) Oddly enough it does not…[laughs] We shot the video ourselves to use as part of a Twitch competition, so it was thrown together rather quickly. Sadly, we did not even get to debut the video on that specific competition. Some people have said they feel like the silhouette effect of the video fits the message, so if they want to believe that we’re all for it!

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Something very cool about us is that every member in the band has the capability of writing a song. We hardly ever write songs together, so it’s usually just someone writing an entire instrumental and emailing it over to see if we all like the vibe. Lyrics get written afterwards. That’s one thing we should probably learn how to do is make music from scratch with all of us sitting there together.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) With our current producer, very little. We began working with a great guy named Nick Scott in Michigan for the “Hella Good” cover. We write the songs, send him over the tracks and then just let him cook and put his vision into what each song should be. Has turned out great for each one so far.

Q) You’ve got a four-song EP in the works. Are you able to tease when fans can expect to check it out?

A) I wish I could tell you, but we have no idea. We are wanting to release one more music video that we are currently hung up on, so once that comes out the EP will follow shortly. Hopefully no later than January at the worst.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) We’ve played in Vegas which was a neat experience. Our favorite shows have probably been Piere’s in Ft. Wayne, Indiana as well as Hobart Theater in Hobart, Indiana. Those are fantastic venues and it’s always great to put on a good show anywhere in our home state. Another fun one was the Harvest Fest in Crown Point, Indiana. Think of a miniature electric forest type vibe, we played on a stage in the middle of the woods. We were the only “heavy” band there and got nothing but compliments.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Too many to name. There may or may not be another cover song collaboration in the near future…But just throwing some names out there, I would say maybe Fronz from Attila or JD from Korn. I’m also a fan of Mixi from Stitched Up Heart. Celebrity collab would definitely be Demi Lovato for me. She needs to be on a djenty nu metal track.

Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Lot of modern metal bands, especially overseas. I’ve always said British and Australian metalcore as of lately has been the superior sound. Bands like Polaris, Northlane and Thornhill. And then you have some crazy talented groups here like Volumes, Cane Hill, Spiritbox and Gideon. All of their songwriting and quality is off the charts, makes it tough to compete!

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) We appreciate all of you who have given us the chance and enjoyed our music. It means the world to us. We weren’t sure how our reception would be coming out of the gate, but you have all grown our confidence. The releases will only get better and better. We promise you that!
