Interviews
Kydd Jones – Holy Ghost
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe my song as good music. It’s a mix of hip-hop, R&B, trap, rock, electronic, jazz, soul, funk…just everything. It depends on the vibe and how I’m feeling.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne…I could go on.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Holy Ghost.”
A) The song is about being independent and doing things your own way without having anybody to guide you. When my friend NIP Productions (the guy that made the beat) sent me his track, I was just motivated to get things off my chest.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think people can connect with it as a lot of times we are navigating relationships where it seems like everybody is just in it for themselves and even though we’re together sometimes, we’re still separate and emotionally detached.
Q) How will the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) I want to do a video for it, for sure! It’ll definitely be something deep and unexpected.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It really depends. Sometimes I’ll have hooks or rhymes in my head that I put down on a track or in lyrics, other times hearing a certain piece of music can spark my creativity.
Q) You worked with NIP Productions on “Holy Ghost,” but how much of a say do you have in the production of your music?
A) I am a producer myself, so I usually am pretty involved in the production, co-production and engineering process. But I’m also an artist, so sometimes I can try to step away from that particular part of the song. It just depends on the vibes at that time and who I’m working with.
Q) What can fans expect to explore on your upcoming album Fasting?
A) It’s definitely some progressive vibes that mix R&B songwriting with hip-hop vibes. Or is that the other way around? It will be really emotional and self-reflective.
Q) You have performed at the Billboard Hot 100 Fest, Austin City Limits Music Festival and even the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) New York has always been a cool place for me because my dad is from there, plus I lived in Brooklyn for a little bit. Anywhere in Texas is always special for me because I’m from there. Also, traveling overseas was super memorable, so my shows in France and the Netherlands stands out, too.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I think Drake and I would be cool together, but I feel like a lot of people can say that. Kendrick Lamar is another artist that I think would be a dope fit. Also, me and Erykah Badu would be a vibe!
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to Gunna’s new album. Having seen his live performances on social media and YouTube, he’s in a different zone now that he’s out and free again.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I’d just like to thank you for your support. I’m always trying new vibes and the best is yet to come!
