Last Call
By: Mariah Thomas
Last Call is a short film from director Winnie Cheung set to premiere at SXSW. It will be part of this year’s Midnight Short Competition. This particular program is known for its creative look into the more disturbing and horror side of short films. The central character, Claudia (Celina Au), spirals between reality and illusion. Last Call is a reminder of the beauty of short films.
Inspired by moments in Winnie Cheung’s own life and friends, this short film follows Claudia through reckless, wild moments. After experiences with a mysterious serpent woman, those moments grow darker. Claudia is haunted by visions of her and the more she attempts to separate herself from them, the stronger they grow.
Celina Au is a standout performer in this short. Serving as the central character, she seamlessly guides the story along. Though there isn’t much dialogue, many moments of silence are impactful. A personal favorite moment is Claudia’s encounter with the serpent woman. The film builds to this moment and leaves you wishing it was longer.
This short was crafted over a five-year time period. Between reshoots and having the time to piece together every detail, this film shines. Filled with visually stunning imagery and bright colors, the movie entices you to follow along with the story. This film makes me excited for future projects from director Winnie Cheung.
Though it follows a darker story, this short is worth checking out. Last Call serves as a glimpse into a beautiful, creative world. Just for how visually stunning it is alone, I think the movie is worth watching.
