Law & Order: Special Victims Unit – Shock Collar
By: Kylyn Bell
Cady Greene (Lea Zawada) brings her daughter Haley (Aislin Echo Wood) to drop off a food order. Haley asks her mom to leave the heat on in the car while she waits. Cady delivers the food, and the man asks her to wait for a second so he can get her a tip. When he returns, someone is speeding off with her car.
Captain Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) drop their kids off together. Benson gets a call from the chief about a case, and she tells him she’s already with Rollins, who can loop in the intelligence bureau. She informs Rollins that a car was stolen with an 8-year-old girl inside.
Benson and Rollins arrive at the scene where they’ve identified the girl and have put a picture and description of her out on alert. They learn that the mother left the car running and the doors unlocked. Silva (Juliana Aidén Martinez), Curry (Aimé Donna Kelly), and Velasco (Octavio Pisano) meet with Benson, who directs them to find witnesses and check cameras.
Benson and Rollins speak with Cady. Cady suggests that whoever stole the car didn’t know Haley was in it, and they agree it’s a possibility. Benson asks her to come to the station and tell them what happened. They assure her that there are officers posted if Haley returns.
A witness (Sharon Wheatley) tells Curry and Silva that she saw a white van up the street following the car.
Velsasco speaks to Scott (John Brodsky), the man that Cady was delivering food to. He tells Velasco that Cady delivers his breakfast twice a week, and he didn’t know she had a kid or he wouldn’t have made her wait to get his wallet. Velasco asks for his ring camera footage.
At the station, Cady recounts what happened to Benson and Rollins. She explains that her daughter was home sick from school, but she couldn’t take the day off or afford childcare services, so she had to bring Haley with her. Benson tells her that it was either a crime of opportunity or somebody targeted Haley. Cady is confident there’s no one in their life that would do this. Rollins asks about Haley’s dad, Dylan (Joshua Bess), and Cady says he is a musician so he’s not around much, but he sees Haley a few days a month. Benson asks Cady to call him, and it goes straight to voicemail.
Silva updates Benson that they are still unable to locate Dylan. Rollins says intelligence is tracking Haley’s photo online to see if anyone has posted her. Curry finds an image of the driver with their face covered on a ring camera, and it’s a woman. They see her wave to Haley and get in the car, suggesting Haley knew her kidnapper.
Benson shows the footage to Cady, and she says she’s never seen the woman before. Velasco and Silva interrupt to inform Benson that Cady’s car has been located near an overpass.
Benson and Rollins arrive at the car’s dumpsite to see it’s been set on fire, but Haley is still missing.
Benson returns to the precinct, and Silva tells her that TARU is still looking through footage from the overpass and the witness who called in the car didn’t see Haley. Silva points out that it’s odd they still haven’t gotten in contact with Dylan, and Benson instructs her to ask his neighbours if they know anything.
Rowan (Mia Reece), one of Dylan’s neighbours, tells Silva that she met his daughter before and is shocked to learn she’s missing and she wouldn’t think Dylan would be involved. Rowan says she saw him get in a white van and leave with his guitar yesterday morning.
Curry shows Velasco footage of a woman fleeing the burning car and getting in the white van that was following Cady, driven by an unknown man. Curry acknowledges that they’re looking for a male-female team.
Curry and Velasco visit the crime scene unit, where an officer (Ruben Javier Caballero) shows them Cady’s car. He says there’s no DNA, but they’ve identified the fire was started from lit nail polish remover as a bottle was found near the crime scene. Velasco tells him to get the bottle checked for prints.
Rollins tells Benson that there’s no sign of Haley online, so they still have no leads. Curry enters with news that Dylan has showed up.
When Benson and Rollins meet Dylan, he explains that he’s been in a recording session for the last twenty-four hours and couldn’t use his phone. They update him on the situation and ask him if he knows anyone who would take Haley. He says no and swears it wasn’t him and says there were 10 people in the studio who can confirm his story.
Benson updates ADA Carisi (Peter Scanavino) that Dylan is no longer a suspect because his alibi checked out. Carisi asks if that means it was a stranger abduction, and Benson says it was two strangers. Rollins gets a message that Haley’s image popped up on a site they were tracking. They find a video of a woman using a shock collar on Haley. Rollins says that the viewers enjoy watching suffering, and Benson states that whoever is watching these videos is paying for it. The squad deduces that because this video was live-streamed two hours after they saw them put Haley in the van, she is less than two hours away.
Benson and Rollins share the confirmation that Haley is still alive with Cady. Cady asks why the kidnappers put it online, and Benson says there are people everywhere who will pay to see all kinds of things. Rollins assures her that it doesn’t appear to be sexual.
A TARU tech (Jennifer Apple) informs Velasco, Silva, and Curry that they can’t determine where the video was shot, but they do know the site has been active for two years. Velasco questions why they only have one video uploaded. Curry asks the tech if they can reach the subscribers, and she tells her that she’s compiled a list of the ones who weren’t using VPNs. Curry asks her to send the list so they can arrest them.
The squad interrogates the men from the list, who all claim they don’t know anything. One man admits to watching but says he immediately clicked off because he liked the original Missy Mayhem. Silva asks what he means by original, and he says there was always the same girl until last time. He tells them he screen-recorded some of her videos before they were deleted.
The squad watches the newly acquired videos of the original Missy. Benson recognizes that all the videos show degrading treatment of the girl like a dog – such as clicker training and using a cone – and dogs barking can be heard in the background, so they suspect these people are breeders. Rollins says she’ll see if the breed can be identified from the barking. Curry finds a new video of Haley that shows her being given commands and sleeping in a dog bed.
An intelligence tech (Joe Boccia Jr.) isolates the barking audio and tells Rollins that he will put it through software and do his best to determine the breed.
Benson and Rollins ask Cady if she knows any dog breeders or if she was looking at getting a dog. Cady looks confused and says she doesn’t and she wasn’t getting a dog.
The squad informs Benson that the acoustics lab was able to narrow the barking down to three breeds, and they’ve compiled a list of breeders. Benson directs them to check them out.
They come out empty at three farms, but someone (Debbie Troche) recognizes the girl in their photo as the daughter of the Carwoods. Silva asks who the Carwoods are, and she explains they are rottweiler breeders like herself. She says they’re from Ellenville, and they brought their daughter, Ashlynn, to a show last year.
Curry tells Silva and Velasco that Benson wants them to liaise with Ellenville PD. Silva gets off the phone with county records in Ellenville, who confirmed the birth certificate for a girl named Ashlynn Carwood (Arielle Andryczak), daughter of Dennis (Skylar T. Adams) and Nicole (J.J. Pyle) Carwood.
They arrive at the Carwood’s property with state troopers surrounding it. Benson instructs Silva and Velasco to move in on the back while she, Rollins, and Curry take the house. Nicole spots the troopers from the window, and a shot is heard inside a few seconds later. Benson directs everyone to enter. Inside the house they see Dennis shot on the floor and Nicole holding the gun to her head. Benson convinces her to drop the weapon, and officers handcuff her. Curry reports they’ve found the room from the video, but they can’t find Ashlynn or Haley. Benson tells her to call the canine unit.
A canine officer (Ruben Rivera) says the dog has found a body and asks for a shovel. They unbury a little girl, and Benson tells them to get CSU and the M.E.
The next morning the M.E. (Natalie Liconti) reports that the girl has numerous broken bones and missing teeth, having suffered a lot of abuse. She says the girl was malnourished but looks about twelve years old, and they were able to match her DNA to the Carwoods, confirming that this is their daughter Ashlynn.
Benson and Rollins arrive at the Ellenville police station to question Nicole about Haley when her lawyer (Nathan Klau) walks in.
Velasco and Curry visit Dennis at the hospital with his lawyer (Tara Bopp). He explains that Nicole was supposed to kill him and then herself if they got caught, but she didn’t follow through. They offer him a deal if he tells them where Haley is. They ask how Ashlynn died, and he says his wife “accidentally” pushed her down the stairs when they were arguing about the fact that Ashlynn didn’t want to be Missy anymore. They question him about the abuse, and he says it wasn’t him. Curry replies, “No, you just like to watch little girls in pain.”
Nicole tells Rollins that the site was Dennis’ idea. She continues that Dennis liked watching her discipline the dogs, and then she started doing it to her daughter, so when she died, they needed a replacement. Rollins asks why they chose Haley, and Nicole says Haley waved to them at a red light, and Dennis took it as a sign. Benson tells her that there’s only one deal available, so whoever talks first gets it.
Curry cuts the lock on the storage unit, and Velasco finds Haley at the back. She starts crying and climbs into his arms.
Carisi arraigns Nicole, and the judge (Mary E. Hodges) grants her bail at $2M as requested. Nicole’s lawyer tells Carisi that his client delivered on her side of the deal, and Haley was found safe and unharmed. Carisi replies, “Haley was found safe, but she wasn’t unharmed.” Dennis is arraigned next, and he receives the same bail.
Carisi meets with Nicole and her lawyer after arraignment court. Nicole says she cooperated, so she wants a deal for her and her dogs. He tells her that the care of her dogs is not in his jurisdiction. Carisi adds that she’s looking at 25 years, and her lawyer says with that deal they should take their chance at trial. Carisi says he must not have heard about the pending federal charges for distributing illegal content and trafficking. Nicole is adamant she had nothing to do with the videos. Carisi says he doubts the feds will see it that way but is willing to tell them she cooperated. Her counsel gives in and agrees to plead guilty if they drop the federal charges.
Benson and Rollins meet Cady and Haley at the hospital. Cady says they’re moving to Vermont, where her parents are, for a fresh start and thanks them for finding Haley. Rollins tells Benson that Carisi is still working out details, but the Carwoods are getting 25 to life, and the subscribers are getting time too. Benson asks how someone could do that to their own kid. Rollins replies, “You’ve been working this job longer than I have, and you still don’t know the answer.”
Benson and Rollins go out for pizza with their kids together.
