Legacies – Fate’s a Bitch, Isn’t It?
By: Atiya Irvin-Mitchell
We open the episode at an art exhibit for Leonardo Da Vinci. Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) and Cleo (Omono Okojie) are there on a mission. Landon can’t quite believe Cleo and Davinci were a couple. The security guard can’t believe the duo has broken in after hours. Landon attacks the security guard which horrifies Cleo. She uses magic to knock out the guard and tells Landon the violence wasn’t necessary. He seems unphased and then Cleo shows him what they came for: a sculpture of a heart. Cleo says she knows it’ll help them kill Malivore because she made us.
Back at the cult Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) are face to face with Clarke (Nick Fink). When they ask him how he’s here he says he was killed, was sent to Malivore and was resurrected by a witch. Josie and Hope are willing to explain recent happenings to him, but Lizzie doesn’t want to give Clarke even an inch. She reminds him that he posed as their headmaster and manipulated Josie and has tried to kill Hope. Lizzie casts a sleep spell and says they should take him back to school and let Alaric decide his fate.
Speaking of Alaric (Matt Davis), at the Salvatore School he’s got some somber news for Kaleb (Chris Lee) and MG (Quincy Fouse). He says there’s been a break-in at an art exhibit in Alexandria. A security guard was assaulted but not before getting a good look at the assailants: Landon and Cleo. He knows that Kaleb has feelings for Cleo and gives him and MG the option of going to cover-up the museum break-in and ideally find them. Kaleb and MG decide it’ll be their first super hero mission.
The girls make a pitstop for snacks and disagree. While Josie and Lizzie feel Clarke is untrustworthy and a lost cause, Hope wants to see if he can be useful. Hope says she agrees, but when the twins go to the store she pops the trunk where Clarke’s being stashed and asks him to tell her his plan.
Elsewhere Cleo and Landon’s partnership is disintegrating. Cleo is troubled by Landon’s violent behavior for two reasons: 1) He nearly wrecked their mission. 2) The brutality he displayed is nothing like the Landon from Hope’s memories. Landon points out that she never actually knew him before the pre-prison world and says that if they want to defeat Malivore they’re gonna have to trust each other.
Clarke pitches Hope his plan. He says that if Malivore is still sending monsters that means there are still open portals. The portals are made of Malivore mud like him, so he can lead Hope to the portal where his father is. Hope mulls this over and then agrees. She drives off leaving the twins in the dust.
MG and Kaleb go to the museum masquerading as police detectives. They get the guard’s story first and then compel his memories away. Feeling accomplished, Kaleb floats some suggestions for what their super hero names could be. But MG wants to ask what Kaleb plans to say to Cleo. He says the plan is to just speak from the art.
Clarke wants to know why Hope drove to the middle of nowhere. She says they’re going to do a spell and she doesn’t want any prying eyes. Clarke insists that he changed, but she doesn’t trust him. So, if he tries anything she doesn’t want any collateral damage. In that vein she casts the mimic spell to force him to do what she does. She forces them both to cut their palms to draw blood for the locator spell. Instead of Malivore mud Clarke’s bleeding red.
Back at the gas station Lizzie and Josie are frustrated. Josie doesn’t get why Hope bailed on them. Lizzie says it probably has something to do with Landon. Josie points out that Landon does make Hope happy. But Lizzie says a relationship doesn’t get more doomed than someone melting after sex. So, Lizzie says that as Hope’s two best friends they have a duty to help her find someone new. But who? As if on cue, Ethan (Leo Howard) drives up and offers the girls a ride.
Clarke is human now and Hope is confused. A few decades back Clarke sought out a way to end his father’s hold on him. He sought out Pandora’s box, but he couldn’t get it open. However, Hope – as the tribrid – could. She explains the box had a muse inside. Clarke says that the muse explains his sudden inspiration to request that a witch resurrect him as a human. Now, that he’s flesh and blood Malivore can’t control him. On the flip side he can die forreal now. Hope is annoyed that Clarke mislead her, but Clarke says seeing as his father still wants him dead he’s still on her side.
MG and Kaleb give Ric and update and a location to meet them at and talk in the car. Kaleb tells MG that no one’s made him feel the way Cleo did. He plans to tell her he’s sorry for assuming the worst of her before, but then the boys stop because they see a pretty bad car wreck and the paramedics are no where in sight. They agree they need to help and Cleo and Landon will have to wait.
Speaking of those two, they’re performing a spell so Landon can get an idea of how to defeat his father. Cleo explains that she used to do the same thing with Da Vinci evert morning. She encourages him not to be intimated. They sit down and perform the spell and Landon sees a lot Hope. But he says he’s got an idea, but before he can elaborate Hope and Clarke barge in.
Josie and Lizzie bring Ethan back to school. They’re greeted by Finch (Courtney Bandeko) who was worried. Josie wants to send Ethan packing as soon as possible. Lizzie; however, thinks he’s perfect for Hope and has been talking up Hope to him. Over Josie’s objections, Lizzie decides to give him a tour. Finch wants to know what happened between Josie and Ethan, Josie doesn’t want to explain.
It’s an awkward scene at the hotel with Clarke, Hope, Landon and Cleo. Hope wants to know why Landon and Cleo were holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes. Landon wants to know why Hope is working with his brother. Clarke swears he’s on team-good guys now, but Landon doesn’t trust him. Cleo promises that there’s nothing romantic between her and Landon and tries to apologize for her previous behavior. Hope thaws a little, but is still wary.
Josie is trying to hide all the magical stuff Ethan could come across and Finch is just confused about her guilt. Lizzie continues Ethan’s tour and talking up Hope to him. Although, Ethan is more interested in Lizzie. He compliments her and says he saw what an amazing football player she was at the charity game. Lizzie agrees to toss the ball around with him if he agrees to hear more of Hope’s amazing qualities.
Clarke and Landon talk a little more about the break-up with Hope. Clarke says the Landon he knew never would’ve left Hope voluntarily. Landon says being trapped changed him. Also, he’s a son of Malivore and, thus, he and Hope were born to destroy each other. Clarke says they give up too easily. He adds that he and Landon getting along would be the ultimate way to stick it to their father. If he can find a loophole for his fate, Hope and Landon can too. Landon says Malivore made him optimistic. Clarke points out that he never told him about Malivore and is alarmed.
Lizzie and Ethan bond over football. Lizzie apologizes to Ethan for his arm and Ethan responds that everything happens for a reason. Ethan wonders if he ordinarily spends this much time talking about Hope. Lizzie admits she doesn’t, but she’d rather not think about her own love life. Omitting the supernatural elements she tells him about her recent heartbreaks. Lizzie offers to set him up with Hope, but Ethan says he’s interested in her.
Cleo and Hope aren’t quite friends again, but they briefly commiserate over having their destinies decided for them. Cleo hopes one day she and Hope can mend fences and encourages her to be honest with Landon about her feelings for him After the talk Hope goes to the room and finds Clarke with his throat slit and bleeding out. But, he’s not dead yet.
Hope wants to use her blood to heal Clarke, but he resists. He might be human, but he’s still Malivore’s son. Hope’s blood could kill him and send him back to Malivore. So, Hope opts to cauterize the wound with her magic. Outside Landon tries to make a run for it and convince Cleo to come with him. Cleo is troubled by Landon’s aggressiveness and refuses to go anywhere with him without answers. So, he drops the façade and says he’s sorry it’s come to this. Then, we cut away.
Alaric stumbles upon Landon, who is not Landon. But when Not!Landon turns around there’s a hand coming out of his mouth. Alaric goes for his gun. Hope comes down and sees him shooting at Landon and is alarmed. Not!Landon escapes in the midst of the chaos and Hope asks where Cleo is currently. But Alaric doesn’t know who Cleo is. Hope realizes that Landon is possessed by Malivore.
Later, Hope and Clarke talk in the hospital. Clarke admits that being a real boy is harder than he thought, human injuries and all. But he does give Hope some good advice. He says he knows she thinks of being the tribrid as a curse, but unlike him she has a family and friends and people to lean on.
Finch and Clarke talk about Ethan. Finch says that because of her family’s lies about her werewolf heritage, she doesn’t like secrets. Josie explains that she did black magic and broke Ethan’s arm and wrecked his shot at a scholarship. She says she’s hurt him in ways he doesn’t realize and doesn’t want him being more hurt by her or Lizzie. Finch says Lizzie is a lot, but her meddling helped them get together. Maybe it’ll all work out for the best.
MG and Kaleb are happy that thanks to them there were no fatalities. But their joy is short-lived. Alaric comes to tell them they’ve lost another student. However, because it’ll be painful he gives Kaleb the option of not remembering. Elsewhere, Hope apologizes to the twins and promises she’s done flying solo forreal this time. Unrelated, Lizzie accepted Ethan’s date.
Cleo is stuck in Malivore, but she goes towards a light. We don’t see where the light leads to, but we cut away and Not!Landon is in a cage and has company. The gang’s all there and they make it clear that they want the real Landon and Cleo back. Malivore!Landon says that’s a coincidence because there’s something he wants, too.
