It’s going to be a very bad, horrible, no good day for everyone at The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted and it’s starts with Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith). In the opening scene Raf’s having a daydream or flashback of being chased through the woods by the Necromancer (Ben Geurens). He’s snapped out of it by Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) as there is an assembly.

In Alaric’s (Matt Davis) address to the student Josie (Jenny Boyd) is still missing. Every faction is doing their part to help – Kaleb (Chris Lee) and the vampires and Jed (Ben Levin) with the werewolves. However, Ric makes one thing clear: do no confront Josie (Kaylee Bryant) if you find her. With the dark magic pumping through her veins she’s capable of just about anything.

But the search isn’t so necessary as Josie walks right through the door. She tells everyone not to look so shocked as she’d never miss her birthday.

Josie goes to see MG (Quincy Fouse) and he has acquired a super villain squad through a suggestion spell. She wants to have a party anyway. MG gives Josie a book of fairytales and tries to remind her of the beginning of their friendship. He gets siphoned for his trouble. Luckily, Kaleb saves him.

Elsewhere, the real Vardemus (Alexis Denisof) and Alaric are strategizing. They’re discussing giving Josie a supernatural timeout in the box from last episode. Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Kaleb think it’s a bad idea, but Ric thinks it’ll buy some time until he and Caroline (Candace King) can figure out how to expel the dark magic from Josie. But Kaleb’s worried Josie could hurt someone before they get her in the box. He tells Ric that she nearly desiccated MG.

Ric takes this as a sign she’s still able to be reached because she didn’t follow through. Kaleb though takes that as a sign that for the time being, they need to treat her like any other monster and Hope agrees. They all want to help, she says, but they need to protect the school in the meantime. Alaric just doesn’t see Josie as a monster, which is why he’s benched. Hope puts him inside the box.

In the woods Landon and Rafael visit a spot with a lot of blood. Rafael keeps having memory flashes of the place and he thinks someone died there. But who? Raf doesn’t know, but he’s pretty sure he killed them.

Lizzie and Hope are decorating in black. They discuss what they’re going to do about Josie, Hope warns Lizzie to watch her back and lower her voice. They don’t want to tip Josie off, but then she appears behind them. Hope asks what she’s done with the real Josie. The Dark Josie says she’s gone for good and blames Lizzie. That’s not the worst part though…

In the Gemini Coven, on the twenty-second birthday for twins they merge. The stronger twin absorbs the weaker twin’s best qualities and the weaker twin dies. The merge usually isn’t done until the twins are twenty-two years old, but it can be done earlier. Josie wants the merge to happen tonight.

Meanwhile, Ric’s living out some Indiana Jones scenario in the box and Lizzie’s packing a bag. She’s convinced she’ll lose the merge. But Hope has a plan and a potion, one where if Lizzie wins the merge that instead of Josie dying she goes to a safe place and they can fix her. This leads to a training montage, inside MG’s head anyway. Lizzie says they need to find a witch to see if she’s really strong enough.

Also, the Necromancer’s creepy eye is still watching the kids. He and Chad (Charles Jazz Terrier) are watching the school only to be interrupted by Josie. She wants to know what the grand plan is.

Landon and Rafael seek Vardemus’s help. They’re going to use a spell to see who the blood belongs to. Landon is sure that Raf didn’t hurt anyone. Rafael though is unconvinced he’s not a killer. Only the blood can tell.

The witch is Alyssa Change (Olivia Liang). She pulls out the empathic orb and Lizzie is afraid. However, she’s not afraid of losing, she’s afraid of hurting Josie. Alyssa says Lizzie is going to lose because she’s afraid of winning and losing. Thus, making her the weaker twin. Lizzie asserts that it sucks she’s going to die because she became a better person and says to heck with the merge.

Unfortunately, Josie is outside the door and doesn’t take the news well. With a flick of her wrists she magically snaps Alyssa’s neck. Josie threatens to kill more students if Lizzie doesn’t show up for the merge.

We zoom in on Jed who is very broken up about Alyssa. Apparently, he actually cared about her. He pleads with Hope to stop her. Taking out monsters is what she does, right? Kaleb takes him to get some air. Things just keep getting worse as Lizzie’s car is gone and MG feels guilty for not getting through to her. Kaleb says, once again, there’s no getting through to Josie. But Hope isn’t ready to give up. Kaleb wants a more lethal back-up plan, so Hope puts him in the box.

MG finds Lizzie and they have an emotional talk. Lizzie says she knows she’s being selfish, but she doesn’t want to die.  MG offers to run away with her. Elsewhere, Landon and Hope talk about their relationship. Landon promises Hope that he’s not going anywhere. The moment is interrupted, sadly, by the Necromancer making a school-wide announcement.

The merge is being setup like a WWE fight. When Lizzie doesn’t show Josie threatens to kill more people. Also, the Necromancer raised Alyssa from the dead, which probably won’t end well. However, Hope decides to take Lizzie’s place and have a magical duel with Josie.

MG and Lizzie talk about what it means to be a hero. Also, Lizzie finally admits she loves comics and Tolkien. It seems that Lizzie is going home.

Rafael is looking bleak at the docks. Landon tells him that whatever he did or didn’t do, he’ll stand by him. Raf’s not so sure about that as the spell showed the blood was his. He’s the one who died in the woods.

Hope and Josie duel. Unfortunately, Hope tries but fails to get through to Josie. There’s a glimmer, but then Josie tries to impale her. Lizzie comes in with the save and says she’s ready to fight.

Lizzie kisses and siphons MG. She gets Josie to clear everyone out for safety. It’s just MG, Hope and the twins. They start the spell and both of their eyes go white. Hope can’t tell who is winning. Meanwhile, Kaleb and Ric escape the box.

Back to Rafael and Landon! The Necromancer snatched and killed poor Rafael coming back from his father’s house. Sadly, this means the Necromancer can use him. Landon doesn’t want to believe it, but Raf doesn’t have a heartbeat. Raf wants to kill himself (again), but the Necromancer doesn’t want that. So, he asks Landon to kill him. Landon refuses because Rafael is his brother. Yet Rafael doesn’t want to be the Necromancer’s puppet and pleads with him.

We cut back to the merge and it appears that Josie has won. We then see a devastated Ric saying he was wrong and the Josie they knew is gone forever.  But it turns out that “appears” was the operative word since Lizzie was the real winner. Hope is going for the deep dive into Josie’s mind. Hope is unconscious and Lizzie is going to have to play dead for a little while.

The Necromancer wants to control Malivore, but if Malivore gets his hands on Landon then he’ll be all powerful. Speaking of that, Landon says they’ll find a way to fix Rafael’s current predicament and hugs him. But there might not be time for that…During the hug Rafael’s eyes go mind-controlled white and he stabs Landon with the golden arrow. Landon takes his dying breaths on the docks.
