In the square Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) finds Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and invokes her full name – her real name Hope Andera Mikaelson. Lizzie tells a confused Hope that she remembers everything. Hope is pleasantly surprised and goes in for a hug because Lizzie is the only person in the world who remembers her. But Lizzie says their frenemy reunion will have to wait. Why? Because Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) are planning to have sex after the decade dance that night.

Lizzie informs Hope she has to tell them the truth and stop them. Hope is apprehensive, but the two are interrupted by a woman (Marisa Coughlan) straight out of the 1980s in shoulder pads and big hair. She holds up a glowing bracelet and says she is The Keeper and the game has begun. She then disappears. Lizzie and Hope set off towards the school to talk to Landon, but they get hit by a car. Wait! Instead of a trip to the ER they find themselves back in the town square without a scratch on them.

Back at the school a somewhat frantic MG (Quincy Fouse) wakes up Kaleb (Chris Lee). The scene is complicated. The audience can see that MG is being pestered by a rather insistent Sebastian (Thomas Doherty). However, Kaleb just sees his friend having a heated argument with thin air.  After being treated to MG shadowboxing, he interrupts and asks MG to find out what Sebastian wants.

Long story short it seems that Sebastian is desiccating somewhere in town. For newbies, that is when vampires dry out after a prolonged period of time without blood. However, he can project his consciousness to people in a vulnerable emotional state. Right now that’s MG. He wants MG and Kaleb to find his body and give him fresh blood.

Elsewhere Josie is in full 80s dance planning mode. Rafael and Landon are chatting and Raf tells Landon Josie is probably expecting to have sex tonight. Also, there is the issue of Rafael’s sensory overload issues. He states that exposure therapy is helping. At any rate, he wants to see Hope again. Josie informs Landon that Lizzie will be keeping their dad occupied tonight.

Speaking of Lizzie, she and Hope realize they’re not really in Mystic Falls. They’re in a Labyrinth where neither of them have access to magic. There are traps everywhere, but if they fall into them the game just resets and they go back back to the start. They fall into the traps a lot.

Vardemus (Alexis Denisof) gives Josie dance advice and has a prickly exchange with Alaric (Matt Davis). He tells Josie that Lizzie didn’t show up for their lunch date. Josie says she probably just got busy, but everything is probably fine.

Back in the game the girls are making progress, until they step on a landmine. Hope wishes aloud for a clue. Luckily, right behind the girls there is a Clue Store. Inside they find the Keeper. It turns out that back in her day, the 1980s, a guy in a black suit dropped her in a “black pit of goo” and she’s been stuck as the Labyrinth’s keeper ever since. She offers the girls a deal – one of them has to trade places with her as The Keeper and the other goes free. They decline and then the Labyrinth’s Minotaur (Cheetah Platt) bursts through the shop. The Keeper says take the deal or end up Minotaur food. The Keeper’s bracelet protects her from the Minotaur, but Lizzie and Hope just have to make a run for it.

Away from the life or death stakes Landon, the virgin, goes to Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) of all people for advice. How do you know if you’re ready to have sex? It’s as awkward as you’d imagine. Dorian says when you find the right person you just know.

Kaleb and MG seek out Ric’s consel. MG is in favor of freeing Sebastain because he has promised to leave. Kaleb is on the fence. Alaric says they should hold off because if the vampire’s desiccating somewhere he might deserve it. Like slaughtered a few villages could deserve it. He tells the boys to learn more about the mystery vamp before unleashing him on an unsuspecting world.

Ric tells Kaleb he’s surprised he and MG wanted his advice. Alaric assumed that Kaleb voted against him after the attack on the school, but it seems that Kaleb’s the only guy who voted for him to stay.

Back in the Labyrinth we see Lizzie and Hope are walking through the fake forest and talking about the real world. Lizzie really wants Hope to tell Josie and Landon the truth, but Hope says it won’t change things. She plans to jump back into Malivore to stop the monsters again. She says ending Malivore is her destiny. That is when the monster comes back and starts chasing them again. They wind up back where they started and are taunted by The Keeper. Hope decides she’s taking the deal and Lizzie can be free. Hope says if she stays the monsters stop coming and that no one will even miss her.

At school Josie is getting ready for the dance only to be confronted by Alaric. He wants to know why she voted against him. Josie says she did it because she believes Ric wanted to leave but couldn’t make the choice himself. Josie says the no-confidence vote freed him, so now he can do things for himself. The two hug and Josie sets off for a dance.

Kaleb goes to where Sebastian is sleeping on a fishing expedition. With some human blood and wordplay Kaleb tricks Sebastian into revealing his true nature. Apparently way back Sebastian made it rain blood. Kaleb tells the vampire that in that just in case he can stay where he is.

There’s a moment between Landon and Josie where they talk expectations. They both make sure the other knows they don’t have to sleep together if the other isn’t ready. With that they head off to the dance resolving to just have fun.

The dance is in full swing with 80s outfits and music. MG and Kaleb have a talk. Kaleb tells MG that Sebastian was pretty cold blooded. MG feels bad for wanting to free him. Kaleb says when he pursues Lizzie he doesn’t think straight. Then, they have a dance off.

Lizzie says she wants to take the deal. If she stays in the magic free zone she won’t have to merge with Josie. Hope says she won’t let her do it, but Lizzie bonks her over the head with a rock. She then goes to The Keeper to take the deal and wants assurance that Hope will live. However, Hope will die anyway. Lizzie is angry, but The Keeper explains that the Labyrinth was created by a guy who wanted to punish a woman for turning him down. The only way for the first keeper to escape was to find a replacement. And on and on and on. She says if Lizzie is lucky one day she’ll find a girl to replace her because it’s every woman for herself. Lizzie takes the bracelet and smashes it, saying “screw endgame.” Now, there’s no keeper.

Lizzie surprises Hope by going all Katniss Everdeen and shooting the Minotaur. They escape, keeper included, and Lizzie says some man is always telling girls they exist for one reason. She says they shouldn’t tell themselves that, too.

Josie and Landon leave to have sex, but are stopped because neither of them have a condom. Landon leaves and can only get one by borrowing Dorian’s car. Awkward.

At the dance Lizzie and Hope see Josie and Landon together and Hope makes a decision. She’s not going to tell them the truth because maybe she doesn’t exist for one destiny or one boy. Plus, she wants them to be happy.  Lizzie says okay and admits she’s happy that Hope is back. They dance and hug.

It seems as though the condom isn’t what stops Josie and Landon’s love connection. Under the bed Josie finds a Journal and sees the song Landon wrote for Hope. Josie tells Landon they should wait. He says they’ve got all the time in the world.

Out at the Old Mill we notice Hope decides to party with Raf. Also, MG sees that Sebastian has escaped. Uh oh!.

Alaric goes to Vardemus with an olive branch at a bar. He says he wants the school to succeed, which means he has to stop wishing for him to fail. He leaves, but there’s one more surprise. The Keeper orders a drink, only to be interrupted by Vardemus. At first she’s confused, but then he starts describing Malivore. Then, he takes off his ring and an illusion spell lifts. Vardemus is really Ryan Clarke (Nick Fink) and he eats The Keeper, much to the bartender’s horror.
