Legacies – There’s a Mummy on Main Street

It’s Spring Break at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, but thanks to the monster of last week Ric (Matt Davis) threw the urn into the river. This led to mini plagues in a town called Maple Hollows. So, instead of fun in the sun, the crew’s heading to find it.

The urn retrieval crew are the usual suspects: Hope (Danielle Rose Russel), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), Josie (Kaylee Bryant), Dorian (Demetrius Bridges), Emma (Karen David) and Kaleb (Chris Lee). No surprise there’s plenty of drama to go around. Emma and Dorian are bummed because they’d counted on a romantic getaway. It’s a little more awkward for Emma because under supernatural influence she kissed Ric. Lizzie’s mad that Hope’s on what Lizzie wanted to be a Saltzman centric family trip, leaving Josie to play peacemaker. Hope’s feeling guilty that she encouraged Dorian and Ric not to nix the unicorn. And then there’s Kaleb, who didn’t go home to avoid family drama and is stuck dealing with school drama because Ric doesn’t’ trust him not to feed on humans in his absence.

There’s a road trip sequence filled with cat fights, road sickness, bad music and lots of “Are we there yet?” Bummer. It feels like Christmas come early when they land in Maple Hallows, SC. The group splits up to start investigating. Josie’s focused on talking to the townspeople, but Lizzie’s not into it. .She accuses Hope of sabotaging the girls’ Spring Break trip with their dad three years ago. It turns out there was a fire in Hope’s room and Ric had to cancel the trip to supervise the repairs. Lizzie thinks Hope started the fire to get attention, but Hope denies it.

Elsewhere, Kaleb’s dealing with the awkwardness between Emma and Ric when they’re interrupted by a swarm of locusts. Yuck. So, the buzzing bugs that have the gang trapped in the van aren’t even supposed to be on this continent. And then they randomly drop dead. Also, the one that bit Josie is giving her some seriously plague-like boils and she’s not the only one. But, fortunately, help has arrived. Unfortunately, it is not so fortunate actually because the folks pretending to be FEMA are headed by the guy from TRIAD. Hope recognizes him and tells Ric. He works out they’re there for the urn too. Uh-oh.

Good news and bad news. Dorian found the urn, but he’s got company and they’re well armed. They tell him to give up the urn or else. Luckily, they don’t get as far as the others because another swarm of locusts descends and stings a lot. It’s really unsettling actually, but good for Dorian because they don’t bother him, just the TRIAD guys. The slightly terrifying mummy that appears after the swarm, however; might not be so friendly.

Dorian, for reasons unknown, does not run for his life as the eight foot tall mummy approaches. Instead, he closes his eyes. When he opens them the mummy growls, takes the urn and walks away.

Okay, so back at the town. Not FEMA’s treating everyone bitten by the locusts, but for the gang there are still big problems. They need to know where Dorian is, but TRIAD confiscated their phones. Ric’s gotta ditch his no-vampire powers rule to ask Kaleb to use his vamp speed to get their phones back.

While Kaleb steals the phone, Ric and the TRIAD guy (Nick Fink) play cat and mouse before sketchy TRIAD guy, whose name might be Agent Clark, finally just tells Ric he knows who he is and all about the school. Bold move.

With Lizzie, Josie and Hope the tension hasn’t abated. Lizzie’s still accusing Hope of setting the fire for attention. Hope calls Lizzie a narcissist. Josie wants them both to chill. Hope finally says she was jealous of the twins because they had what she wanted: a simple day with her family, but she lost half of her stuff in that fire including something she made with her father. It wasn’t her.

Outside Agent Clark’s trying to play Ric. He claims his organization’s in desperate need of help. They’re in the business of keeping magic a secret and he asks Ric to get Kaleb to compel away the town’s memory. He doesn’t want anyone talking about the mummy and more importantly he says his organization’s not equipped to go toe to toe with the mummy. Ric reluctantly agrees, but Hope clues him in that Clarke’s knows them from Kansas and that TRIAD happens to be above the entrance to Malivore. Now, they really have to get that urn.

A crash course in offensive magic later Emma’s off to look for Dorian, but not before giving Ric some advice. He should be willing to lean on his students a little. They’ve got magic and he doesn’t. With that in mind, Ric has a chat with Kaleb and explains the supernatural apocalypse that’s to come if Malivore’s open. Ric admits there are no good options, but for the time being he needs Kaleb to go compel some people.

Kaleb’s bummed that the girls get to fight a monster when he’s stuck compelling people. But Ric says thing’ll get interesting for the baby vamp later. Zoom in on Ric, Hope, Josie and Lizzie walking down Main Street looking for a fight with a mummy. They’re ready for a fight. Well, everyone except Lizzie. Lizzie just wants to get Hope to admit she started the fire. They argue, Hope says again that she didn’t start the fire and also that it’s not the right time for this conversation as there’s a mummy to fight. Lizzie won’t let it go though. She says Hope was mean to her, but Hope says it was the other way around. Josie and Ric would like to be literally anywhere else in the world.

But then we get to the heart of the matter. Lizzie’s bipolar. After the trip was canceled three years ago she had her first episode and she thinks Hope told everyone. Hope denies it and swears she didn’t even know. Hope says even if she did know she wouldn’t have done that. Ric and Josie tell them to nix the fighting because the mummy’s arrived.

Back in the tent Kaleb is being a surprisingly kickass life coach. In addition to getting a man to forget about the plagues, he tells him to ask for the raise he deserves with a bonus. Then, he gets a woman to quit smoking. Next he picks a mean, insensitive lady to be the fall person for a not yet revealed plan.

Out on Main Street the trio and Ric are trying to figure out a game plan for the mummy. With some prompting the girls convince a protective Ric that the powerful witches will fare better against the mummy than a dude with a crossbow. They face-off with the mummy, who when it opens its mouth screams hornets and nightmares at the girls. They bring up a magical shield. They’re about to try a different attack when Hope and Lizzie start coughing up bugs. More nightmares. Josie saves the day by lighting the mummy on fire. As the mummy’s been turned into ashes Lizzie declares this is the worst Spring Break ever.

Alaric and Agent Clarke talk about the day’s events and Clarke thanks Ric for the help, but not before making a thinly veiled threat about hoping he never has to look into the Salvatore school. It seems like that might come up later.

Ric has another talk with Kaleb. The mummy’s not actually dead. The mummy’s power source is it’s scarab, which needs to be siphoned by the twins. They just need to wait.

The mummy comes back and starts its rampage. It wants the urn. Kaleb uses his vamp speed to get the scarab and the twins siphon the magic away saving the day – more than once. We find out Kaleb compelled the mean lady from earlier to steal the urn and give it to them. It looks like Team Salvatore is home-free, but wait! TRIAD’s onto them and they’ve got leverage in the form of Emma and Dorian.

With the choice of hand over the urn or Dorian and Emma die, they hand over the urn. So close.

It’s a somber ride home, but Hope and Lizzie finally have a hostility free heart to heart. Hope tells Lizzie that due to her own family history with mental illness she’s probably not immune to Lizzie’s struggles, so she’s never make fun of her mental health. Lizzie finally believes her, but Hope wants to know who told her that she had in the first place. Lizzie looks meaningfully at Josie.

Safely home Ric thanks Kaleb for his help on the trip. He really came through for him. Going off the goodwill Kaleb tells Ric that he respects him, but he needs to take the training wheels off. Witches need to learn offensive magic and vampires need human blood. If monsters keep coming the students will need to be at full strength.

And then we learn the truth about the fire. Lizzie asks Josie why she lied about Hope telling everyone about her Bipolar Disorder and Hope wants to know, too. Josie explains she had a crush on Hope. Josie says Lizzie made a remark about Josie being obsessed with Hope and Josie said she’d never be obsessed with someone who’d say mean things about her twin. Josie says she slipped a note under Hope’s door back then, but freaked out and tried to set it on fire yet accidentally started a much larger fire. Lizzie wants to know why Josie went to such extremes. Josie says that every time she likes someone Lizzie goes for them and they always pick Lizzie. Ouch.

Dorian and Emma share a moment and Emma confesses her liplock with Alaric. Dorian doesn’t take it well. He punches Alaric and quits. Back at TRIAD HQ Agent Clarke goes against orders, kills the guard and throws the urn into Malivore.
