We open with a flashback, an 8-year-old Alyssa (Mei-Lin HoSang) with Alaric (Matt Davis) post her parents dying in a fire that Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) suggests wasn’t so accidental. Uh-oh. Ric takes the baby witch to The Salvatore School and we get a montage of Alyssa’s mean girl antics through the years. In elementary school she turned Josie (Lily Rose Smith) and Lizzie (Tierney Smith) purple, the other kids were afraid of her and she had a lot of dust ups with the twins. Present day  when the student body learns she has a roommate they say they’ll pray for her. That roommate, of course, is Hope (Danielle Rose Russell).

Speaking of that, she’s not happy. She walks in on Alyssa (Olivia Liang) fooling around with Jed (Ben Levine) on her bed. Alyssa’s not even a little sorry. Hope ventures to Landon’s (Aria Shahghasemi) room for the night, but as she walks through the halls the students aren’t alone. There’s a mossy, slimy creature lurking. And it goes after Alyssa as she’s stealing Hope’s clothes.

Elsewhere Josie (Kaylee Bryant), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), and Alaric are trying to figure out a way to deal with Josie’s dark magic lamp. Josie wonders if maybe she deserves the black magic recoil. Lizzie suggests sending it to the prison world where there’s no magic. Alaric says absolutely not.

When he leaves the twins know their father isn’t letting them anywhere near the prison world with their wicked Uncle Kai there. Lizzie suggests they use the meteor show tonight to make a new pyschopath free prison world. They did it when they were five years old so they could do it again.

The good news is that Emma is (Karen Tig) back. But it’s awkward. Remember the Emma, Alaric and Dorian love triangle last year? However, she’s only back to run Coven Day, which is unfortunate considering all the kids at that school are in need of a shrink. History lesson time, Emma tells the witches that Coven Day is a day for them to come together. Witches have always been persecuted she tells them, so they should be proud of their community and support each other. As she says that Alyssa walks in and announces she didn’t wanna come.

Taking Landon’s advice from their sparing session, Hope asks Alyssa to start over. She says they should talk about boundaries. Alyssa says no dice as she just doesn’t like Hope. Hope persists and the monster whispers in Alyssa’s ear that Hope is blaming her for everything and that Hope will get rid of her if she doesn’t act first.

Wade (Elijah B. Moore) tries to give a presentation on his coven, but he doesn’t have one. He’s also bad at magic and has never really fit in. He tells the students he’s been misdiagnosed and he thinks he’s not a witch. He believes he is really a fairy. The other kids laugh and Alyssa trolls him earning her a detention from Emma. She says it can’t be worse than sitting through the presentation. Hope snarks back that living with her is hell on earth. Then, Wade sees the monster. It appears to be feeding on anger. Next, it tells Hope not to let anyone make her look weak.

So, now Hope is in mean girl mode. She magically steals another girl’s shoes. Then, she tells Landon his advice was as useless as he is after the monster whispers in her ears that she can’t protect him so she needs to cut him loose. Ouch.

In response Landon goes into research mode only to be interrupted by Wade. Landon says he can’t talk as he thinks there’s another monster on the loose. Wade has a theory: a Qareen (J.J. Dunlap). The Qareen is a monster that feeds off of strife by encouraging insecurities until it materializes into the human plane. It’s invisible right now, so why can Wade see it? Because Fairies can see it.

Emma is trying to get the witches to mellow out through meditation. The Qareen is not making that easy though. It tells Hope everyone else is weak, which is why they need her. Hope says out loud that she has to do everything herself. Emma soldiers on and gets interrupted by Lizzie demanding her assistance. She scolds her and Josie for being MIA.

Ric is at the bar chatting with Sheriff Mac in code about the magic. In this case the device is a bomb Ric’s trying to defuse in a true crime novel. The conversation turns to their kids. Alaric hints to Sebastian being wrong for Lizzie and his leaving.

Emma creates a sphere to connect everyone’s thoughts and the Qareen takes advantage encouraging everyone’s insecurities. The witches start to get angry. Alyssa needles Lizzie and Hope about Landon and Sebastian. Lizzie tells Alyssa that at least she has a family unlike her. Everyone starts arguing and Emma halts the exercise and sends everyone to their rooms to cool down.

Hope holds Lizzie back and tells her something’s wrong. Meanwhile, Jed and Kaleb (Chris Lee) are about to have knockdown drag-out thanks to The Qareen.

Another flashback to four years ago. Alyssa has proven herself to be a problem child and Alaric is telling Emma he’s worried she’s beyond help. She’s been at the school for years and can’t stop getting into fights. If she doesn’t stop Ric says they might have to consider expulsion. Emma says they swore they’d never do that again. It seems they might be talking about more than a different school.

Hope and Lizzie insult people while Landon and Wade try to figure out a plan. They seem to be the only ones around not raging. Speaking of that Emma and Dorian, encouraged by the monster they rehash their past relationship. That fight was just what the monster needed. It’s on this world’s plane now.

Research session in the library. A fairy can stop a Qareen. Hope shoots the idea down and says trying to fight the monster would be as delusional as Landon’s training. Ouch twice-over! Wade leaves and Landon is upset.

Josie is the next target. It thrusts her into a dark and twisty version of the future where the school has burnt to the ground. She wakes up and the good news is that Emma put a barrier spell around the monster. And the bad news is that Landon is infected. But he’s got an idea. He goes to Wade and apologizes for all the mean things that were said. He tells Wade he’s not useless. Fairies, according to his research, run on belief. He just needs some people to believe in him. People are chanting as it seems that Wade, Landon rallied the student body. At first nothing is happening and Wade thinks no one really believed in him. Landon says he believes and he’ll prove it. He charges The Qareen and tries to fight it, but gets his neck snapped. Wade says he’s got this and sprouts wings. He then sprays the monster with Fairy dust and kills The Qareen. Everyone is happy…mostly.

More flashbacks where we see Emma and Ric confront Alyssa four years ago. Lizzie was sent to the infirmary with severe burns. Alyssa claims she has an alibi, but Emma knows she used a linking spell to do it. Alaric tells Alyssa she’ll have to send her away, which seems to upset her. But Emma offers a different solution. She can cast a spell to take away her memories of the fire and her parents’ deaths to give her a fresh start. Emma says she’s not like the others. Alaric says it’s up to Alyssa, who wants to stay.

The hour glass of dark magic is starting to crack. Alaric realizes it’s a part of the prophecy mentioned. The one that said daughters would suffer for the sins of their father. Okay, seriously, what happened to the others? Ric says they have to act quickly.

They’re going to use the witches’ collective power to create another ascendant. Emma uses it as a teachable moment about unity. Hope apologizes and Alyssa does, too. Josie apologizes for creating the problem and Lizzie apologizes for not noticing she was in trouble. The spell works.

Later Hope tells Landon she’s sorry for the stuff she said. Landon says it’s forgotten, but says she doesn’t want him to be the hero. The hero dies at the end so she can’t train him. Landon accepts that she can’t teach him, but he’ll find someone else so that they’re both standing in the end.

Ric shares a sweet moment with Sherrif Mac (Bianca Kajlich) and then disappears. The twins talk and Lizzie is still upset about Sebastian. She worries that she wasn’t enough for him. Hope joins them and tells them she’s afraid Landon hates her, but then they disappear.

One more flashback. Alyssa has made progress in counseling with Emma. She’s made friends: Clara and Zoe. Emma thinks she’s stable enough to stop counseling.

Present day time we see Dorian and Emma apologize to each other. Emma admits she’s not just in town for Coven Day. Ric needed help with a student. Dorian asks what they did. Emma explains they did what they’d done before. Alyssa comes in and asks to talk to Emma. She says when Josie gave everyone their Hope memories back she got other memories back. Alyssa says she knows what Emma and Alaric did. She remembers the fire and what Ric did to the other kids. Emma wants to get Alaric to explain, but Alyssa says that’s impossible. She sent them to the prison world as a poetic punishment. It seems she linked the ascendants so when they sent the dark magic away they sent themselves. With a time delay.

Emma says the meteor shower is over and Alyssa knocks her out and wipes her memory. But wait! Hope remembers. When Alyssa comes back to their room Hope uses magic to throw Alyssa against a wall and says it’s time for them to talk.

The episode ends in the prison world. Ric didn’t kill Sebastian (Thomas Doherty). It seems he sent him to the prison world – the one with Kai where he, Josie and Lizzie are trapped.  Uh-oh.
