Legacies – What Was Hope Doing in Your Dreams?
By: Atiya Irvin-Mitchell
The construction worker from the last episode is actually an agent and he’s trying to learn more about Seylah (Ayelet Zurer). She’s been erased, but she left the picture of her and baby Landon behind, but the mystery man just ends up with more questions. That’s it for him for now.
At the Salvatore school it’s midterm time and the students are having some nightmares. The ones that are sleeping anyway. We zoom in on Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Alaric (Matt Davis) in the headmaster’s office wondering when the next monster will come for the urn. Ric wants to know where the urn actually is, but Hope says it’s better if only one person knows.
They talk about informing the student body of impending weirdness; however, speaking of the truth Ric asks Hope if she’s sure lying to Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) is for the best. She says the truth would break his heart, so yes.
Alaric announces to the older students that they have another Malivore artifact. He warns them that a monster is likely coming, and the younger kids will be being evacuated. The older students are free to go to the Lockwood mansion with them but whether they stay or leave exam week is still on.
As everyone heads back to bed, Kaleb (Chris Lee) and MG (Quincy Fouse) discuss why they’re staying. Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) and Landon discuss Hope’s absence. Rafael thinks she’s probably prepping for battle, but Landon’s worried she’s regretting ringing him back already. Raf tries to reassure him and says Landon should focus on the good in his life. Landon says he’ll try.
Elsewhere, a strange creature in a robe is hovering over a sleeping MG and a sleeping Alaric. They jolt awake. This isn’t over.
Rafael wakes up in the library to Hope. She’s flirting with him, which he’s confused by, and then she kisses him. Just kidding, it was a dream. He wakes up, but to a less welcoming figure. He sees an angry man that we can assume is a past foster parent who is demanding to know where something is. When Rafael insists that he doesn’t know the man, who is accompanied by a woman in a veil with translucent skin, the man hits him with a belt. He then wakes up, presumably for real this time.
Rafael goes to Alaric and Hope and explains the dream. They realize the monster has arrived. Ric goes into research mode and notes every culture has mythology surrounding dream creatures. They find the legend based on Raf’s description. She’s called the Night Hag. Ric makes an announcement to the remaining students that the Night Hag (Joy Goodman) is an evil spirit trapped on the astral plane. She can only interact with the living through dreams, specifically nightmares. This means everyone needs to stay awake to avoid any unpleasant encounters, but the kids are free to evacuate as another option.
Hope and Landon talk post-announcement. Landon asks Hope if she can remember anything about what happened during the three days they lost. She lies and says no. He seems to accept this and offers to help but Hope quickly tells him it’s better if he leaves. Landon turns her down.
The not sleeping is getting to the students who stayed. Kaleb wakes up a shaken MG from a nightmare about himself in ripper mode. Kaleb, slightly oblivious, teases MG about his criticism of Dracula in a presentation. MG says that just because vampires have been vicious for a long time doesn’t mean they have to stay that way. He’s clearly still shaken up by the thought of being a ripper.
In class MG is taking Bram Stoker to task for Dracula’s abuse of consent when Landon starts to have a very bad dream. He’s taking a test he’s woefully unprepared for and then ends up in front of the class in his underwear. As the laughing begins, he realizes it’s a nightmare, so he forces himself awake by stabbing himself with a pencil. This presents a dilemma: he’s bleeding, so what happens in dreams can affect the real world.
Alaric makes a special announcement. Since nightmares can hurt you thanks to the Night Hag, he’s allowing the faculty to give out energy herbs. He worries he’s going to get sued, but Landon tells him not to worry as his last PE teacher was dealing cocaine. Yikes. On the monster front, Ric thinks the Night Hag’s plan is to torture them until they give up the urn. But since she’s trapped in the astral plane, Landon wonders how she’ll take the urn anywhere. Alaric just says sometimes legends get twisted overtime.
Ric promises they’ll stop this week’s creature, but he thinks it’d be safer for Landon to evacuate. They still don’t know if Landon has any powers to protect himself with. Landon’s not having it though, he worked hard to get there so he doesn’t want to run.
Landon makes a remark about Hope dodging him and she quickly leaves. He looks to Ric for advice and he tells him to stay busy and let Hope be Hope.
The girl in question decides to go to the gym and spar. She spars with Rafael and wins. They have a bonding moment and Raf asks Hope to be good to Landon. He says Landon’s always waiting on the other shoe to drop and explains that growing up in the system things always go wrong. Rafael tells her it’s a bad idea to lie to him, even if she thinks there’s a good reason.
Landon ventures into the library and does some research. He makes a discovery and goes to Ric, who once again encourages him to evacuate. Landon brushes this off and says he thinks the Night Hag isn’t really a Night Hag, but an oneiri – a shape-shifting dream demon from Greek mythology. Ric charges off with intention and Hope and Landon call a meeting with Raf, MG, and Kaleb.
Hope’s got a plan: lure the monster by pulling it out of the dream plane. But, of course, this is totally dangerous. So, they’re under no obligation to stay. Landon won’t leave Hope, Rafael won’t leave Landon, MG wants a supernatural adventure and Kaleb’s decided where MG goes that he’ll go. So, the plan is on.
Ric falls asleep and gets stuck in a bad dream and the kids head into their own nightmares. It’s different for everyone. Raf’s is a cross between his romantic feelings for Hope and a painful werewolf transformation. Landon’s is all about his claustrophobia. Kaleb’s secretly worried he’s a monster and MG’s is about being a ripper. They face their individual fears and successfully pull the demon into the real world.
The demon goes to Hope’s room looking for the urn. It turns out that location was a fake-out. The demon and Hope have a pretty intense fight, which ends with her stabbing it through the eyes with an arrow thus killing the demon.
The crew shares a very cool serious walk moment and the day is saved, but some things are unresolved. Back in the dorm Hope asks Rafael why he’s been avoiding her and Raf explains with a story. When he met Landon and Landon told him about one of his abusive foster parents, Raf decided to track him down and beat him up. He never told Landon. Since he met Landon, he’s felt the need to protect him and explains he lied because he’ll always do what’s best for him. He says that means he needs to keep his distance from a disappointed Hope.
In Landon and Rafael’s room there’s a musical bonding session with all the boys. Hope looks on happy that Landon’s fitting in and leaves the guys in the moment. Landon notices and chases after her. He decides to tell Hope that he’s been so worries because although a lot of people have bailed on him, at the Salvatore school he feels like he has more to lose than he ever has before. But he’s determined not to lose Hope and says he’ll become someone she trusts enough to confide in. They share a kiss.
As the episode closes, we see the sketchy agent again. He goes to Hector (Tony Guerrero) and Maria’s (Lorraine Rodriquez-Reyes), Landon and Raf’s former foster parents, house asking about Landon. However, he hits a dead end because the couple has been compelled. They believe the boys have been adopted, but it doesn’t seem that the agent’s willing to give up as he asks if they have any of Landon’s belongings. Hector and Maria invite him in.
