Let It Die Here
By: Gladys Luna
Baring your soul is always an act of bravery and sometimes a mere cry for help in the middle of a deafening world that pushes hard to bury your voice. Let It Die Here is an open-hearted documentary of the personal and professional journey of the talented, Grammy and Golden Globe nominated musician Linda Perry who leads us by the hand through each and every facet of her life narrated from her very unique perspective.
Accompanied by her already signature hat and the music under her arm, Linda focuses on the highlights and the struggles that made her who she is today. This is a glimpse into her memoirs in which she allows us to see beyond the artist and connect with her most vulnerable parts, walking us from her fractured childhood and all the way to her successful career in the music industry. Her somber mood and melancholic gaze sheltering her delicate heart captivates you from the moment she appears on the screen. Linda is not afraid to show herself as a human being still trying to figure out her place in the world.
Supported by the use of animated videos to enhance the narrative of the documentary, director Don Hardy manages to capture Perry’s essence in the most pure and raw manner without sugar coating her story. Being able to put together the testimonies of her best friend and artists such as Dolly Parton, Brandi Carlile and Christina Aguilera – musicians that have worked closely with Linda and who share their perspective about how her remarkable understanding of music and life – shed some light over their careers.
Let It Die Here gives viewers the opportunity to understand and experience the existence of the iconic Linda Perry through her eyes and skin. It is an ode to the music and her passion for it that continues saving her over and over again. This film is an absolute must see with the hopes that someday she could finally find the answer to the question, “What would Linda write for Linda?”
