LGBT Fans Deserve Better Pop Up Store Launch
By: Krista Ann Freego
WHEN DOES THE STORE LAUNCH? Thursday, August 10 at 3:00pm EST
HOW LONG WILL THE POP UP STORE BE OPEN? Midnight, EST, on August 31st
Set your watches because at 3:00 PM EST TODAY because LGBT Fans Deserve Better launch their pop up store. I was allowed a sneak- peak at their store and I can assure you, it was more than worth the wait.
I saw my first “Support Positive LGBT Representation” T-shirt when I was at ClexaCon, earlier this year. Sadly, I was a little late to the party and all the t-shirts has been sold out, along with the LGBT Fans Deserve Better Multi-Fandom Art book. In essence, I have been waiting since March of 2017 to be able to get my hands on both of these items and the day has finally arrived. I can assure you that once the store goes live I will most likely buy one of everything! In addition to the aforementioned t-shirt and Multi-Fandom Art book, there is so much more that I didn’t even know about.

WHY I AM PROUD TO SUPPORT LGBT FANS DESERVE BETTER:
Not only does LGBT Fans Deserve Better have amazing products, but they have an even MORE amazing message! They created the classic “Support Positive LGBT Represenation” T-shirts in 2016, as part of a campaign for celebrity outreach with the mission to spread the word and educate the media industry on the importance of LGBTQ+ Representation.
Proceeds from all sales go towards continuing to support the Non-Profit Organization LGBT Fans Deserve Better and The Trevor Project!
LGBT Fans Deserve Better is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit “all-volunteer organization of fans from all over the world who have come together with the mission to educate people on how harmful negative LGBTQ+ representation in the media can be to our community, as well as advocate for better, more positive representation. We aim to be a resource that enables the public to learn more about the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community in regards to media representation so they can become more critical viewers and creators, resulting in more creative, impactful and positive stories in the future.”
HOW DOES LGBT FANS DESERVE BETTER ACHIEVE THIS GOAL?
Through education, awareness, advocacy, community support and fundraising! So far, they have raised $171,247!

WHY POSITIVE LGBTQ+ REPRESENTATION IN THE MEDIA IS IMPORTANT TO ME:
I am 37 years old and I didn’t come out as gay until March of this year. For fourteen years I struggled with my sexual orientation. I grew up in and live in a small rural community far removed from diversity and tolerance. It felt like it was easier to hide. It felt like It was easier to be who everyone else wanted me to be, rather than be true to myself. For the longest time, I didn’t see myself in movies and television shows. I thought something must be wrong with me and that I was supposed to conform to what society showed me over and over and over again was “normal.”
Each time I watched a show or movie or web series that had a LGBTQ+ character, I found peace. I connected with a part of myself that I kept hidden. I felt a part of something. I no longer felt alone. With every new instance of a positive LGBTQ+ character in media that I came across, I felt more confident, proud and “normal” about who I am and my place in this amazing LGBTQ+ community of love, support, strength and acceptance.
If it wasn’t for positive LGBTQ+ representation like Carmilla; The Leslie Series; Couple-ish; Wynonna Earp; South of Nowhere; Orphan Black, Swerve; A4O; Person of Interest; Lost Girl; The L Word and Grey’s Anatomy (to name a few), I would still be hiding and I would still be alone. When my “Support Positive LGBT Representation” t-shirt arrives, I will wear it with pride in my small minded community and I will always utilize every opportunity to support positive LGBTQ+ representation and I hope that you will do the same!
