Lies We Bury
By: Jamie Steinberg
Captivating and intense, Lies We Bury is a dark tale of a traumatized young woman who is simply seeking a way to put her difficult past behind her. Unfortunately, her new beginning in Portland isn’t as easy as she had hoped. Find out why you won’t be able to put this book down when the truth about the lies we bury come to the surface.
Claire Lou (Marissa) survived the childhood trauma of being held captive in a basement. Her mother, Rosemary, was kidnapped by a man named Chet and held there against her will with a woman named Nora. During their time together, Rosemary gave birth to Marissa and Nora had a baby named Jenessa. Later on, Chet also kidnapped a woman named Bethel, who ended up dying while giving birth to their other sister Lily. The entire time they were all kept down in this basement, only getting visits from Chet every other day where he would sexually assault Rosemary. Finally, Rosemary and the children were brave and able to escape.
We flashforward to a grown Marissa (now called Claire) who lives in Portland. She has put her trauma behind her, thankfully, except for the occasional cigarette burn she inflicts on herself when she gets overwhelmed. Claire takes a job working for a local paper taking crime scene photos. While on her beat she finds a note left on her car window that threatens a murder if Claire is not able to solve the clues they leave in the message. From here Claire spirals down a tale that leads to her uncovering bodies before they have been reported to the police. Can Claire put the stress of her past away or will she be forced to confront it in order to save some lives?
Author Elle Marr incredibly weaves a tale full of suspense that keeps readers on the edge of their seats! While the readers will recognize a tale similar to the one told in the film Room, Marr does an amazing job of making this storyline unique. Readers feel Claire’s pain of what she endured at the hands of a mad man and truly hope that this new threat isn’t him out for revenge or a copycat!
For those looking for an edge of your seat, gripping tale that sucks you in page after page, do yourself a favor a grab a copy of Lies We Bury. You’ll certainly want to read it before it becomes the next hit Lifetime movie.
