Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Indie wonk pop

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) We have a ton of influences since our music tastes are so varied, but we have a big overlap of artist that we love. The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem and Phoenix are ones that always come to mind first.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “I Want to Be You.”

A) The track is about a real experience Chloe [Howard] had at her first gig. It’s about admiring the artist so much you want to become them and also be with them. It’s essentially about wanting to be someone other than yourself.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think, unfortunately, a lot of young people are constantly comparing themselves to other people – especially on social media! So, the theme of wanting to be someone other than yourself is probably quite relatable for a lot of people. I also hope people just connect with the track because it’s a banger and we’re really proud of it!

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) Our pal Sal Redpath took our very vague video idea of delving into someone else’s body and turned it into a masterpiece. The video follows a couple doing mundane things together and then one of them delves into the other’s body and sees a different perspective of their relationship. I guess it reflects that morphing into someone else isn’t always what you really want / isn’t a good thing.

Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) It varies track to track but a lot of the time Chloe has lyrics ready to go and once the music is ready to go she can visualize which lyrics fit with the music.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) It’s sort of a creative free for all! Recording with Ali Chant (producer of our album One More Thing) there was nothing that was off limits. If one of us wanted to try something a bit rogue it was encouraged (and most of the time worked quite well). We’ve learnt through recording the album that it’s sometimes best to not have every element of a track mapped out beforehand because some of the best bits come naturally in the flow of recording.

Q) Your LP One More Thing is out now. What are some themes you explore on it?

A) The overall theme is about growing up and being in your mid-twenties. We’ve been writing and playing together since we were teenagers, so this album reflects a lot of that time and our relationships with each other. “Mother” is about learning that your parents don’t hold the answers to everything and realizing that the people you look up to are only human too. Whereas “Nepotism (baby)” is a bit less serious and more of a tongue in cheek sarcastic look at the music industry. Lots of themes are covered!

Q) Certainly, all the songs on the LP are “babies” for you, but is there one that stands out as a personal favorite or even one that challenged you the most creatively?

A) “Pine” and “It” are two that stand out to me. They’re very soul baring tracks and the space within the actual music was very daunting at first. We’re used to getting over excited and cramming as much fun stuff into a track as possible – so leaving these ones to shine on their own (lyrically + musically) was quite scary. Playing them live is sometimes a bit daunting too – you can really feel the energy of the crowd in the space of the songs.

Q) If you’ve started playing the LP live, what are some tracks that get the most fan appreciation?

A) The opening riff of “IWTBY” is always fun to hear – the crowd sing it back to us which is exactly what we wanted. It’s almost like a football chant. “Floor” is also a really fun one to play live. Leila [Deeley] hops on the synth and Chloe has a sick vocal pedal that gets a great reaction.

Q) What do you hope lingers with audiences that explore One More Thing as a whole?

A) First of all, I hope the fact that it’s a banging album with no skips sticks with the audience but also I hope that anyone struggling with growing up and navigating life as a young adult can find comfort in the fact that we are doing exactly the same! It can be really difficult but there’s also so much to look forward to and enjoy.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) We have always said LCD Soundsystem, but we are now thinking a collab with Gorillaz would be epic!

Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Mount Kimbie! Annabel showed us the track “Fishbrain” when we were on tour, and we’ve all been obsessed with their new album since. We’ll definitely be going to watch them at Greenman festival!

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Our social media accounts are run by all four of us so it’s a great way to reflect all of our personalities! We have a WhatsApp group for fans and we love chatting in it about music and other fun stuff that they’re interested in. Social media helps us reach people across the world which is a really lovely thing.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) A huge thank you for listening to the album! It’s a dream come true of ours to have a debut album out so the fact that people are really enjoying it is a huge bonus. Also come to our upcoming shows – we’d love to meet you. xo
