Livingston – Glow
By: Alejandra Gil M.
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Cinematic pop. Storytelling pop. I like the idea of it being somewhere in the middle of pop, singer songwriter and movie soundtracks.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Ludwig Goransson, Jon Bellion, Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, Hans Zimmer, J. Cole, Lana Del Rey
Q) Your new song “Glow” is out. What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It’s usually just a word. “Glow” was floating around as a concept for a couple months before it landed. That word will attach itself to an emotion, and then the rest of the story is usually really easy to write once the core emotion reveals itself. Same with the production because then sonic decisions can fall in line with a strong emotional statement versus producing for a vibe, which isn’t my strong suit. Story first.
Q) What kind of feedback have you been receiving from fans about “Glow?”
A) It’s been really heartwarming. The couple weeks leading up to release the crowds got louder and louder signing it. It was really humbling to see how emotionally they resonated with the lyrics. Felt so good to finally get that song in front of people.
Q) Is there an emotion or message that you hope lingers with listeners?
A) Inspiration, hope, a little wonder. I make music for people who still believe in magic. I want them to know that there is a purpose to every season and that they aren’t alone in whatever isolated or beautiful season of life they are in.
Q) Your previous releases include tracks like “Look Mom I Can Fly” and “Gravedigger.” Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) There’s a lot on the way. [smiles]
Q) Do you have a favorite song of yours or one that has been more emotional for you to perform?
A) “Glow” has been surprising me every time. Just seeing how emotional people get. It’s a lot for me to take in.
Q) You recently wrapped the second leg of A Hometown Odyssey Tour in North America. Where are some of your favorite places to perform?
A) We had a blast – Columbus, Boulder, Ft. Worth, Houston, Sacramento were huge highlights. I was blown away by some of these cities where I had no idea what to expect.
Q) After North America, your EU and UK tour started in January. What can people expect from your live performances?
A) Big feelings, bright lights and a time and place to experience unity with people.
Q) What has it meant to you to be getting more recognition for your music?
A) I know it’s a positive indicator, but I try to not pay too much attention to it. I really stay off of the internet as much as I can (unsuccessfully, admittedly) and try to avoid reading comments (I’m pretty good at this). My favorite is meeting people in person who’ve been reached by the music. That always feels special and random and makes me feel really lucky, it also brings it down to earth a lot instead of being a digital thing.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Hans Zimmer
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much. I want to take you on a journey and give you a world to project whatever you are going through into it. However and wherever my songs reach you, I’m grateful.
