Lucifer – Liar, Liar, Slutty Dress On Fire

The recent episode of “Lucifer” brought forth many complications between Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and his mother Charlotte while also dealing with the ever on going will they or won’t they between Lucifer and Chloe. We saw the ups and downs of a mother/son relationship that has haunted Lucifer for centuries. We also saw a new side of Amenadiel that was possibly the best thing about the episode.

In Liar, Liar, Slutty Dress On Fire, Lucifer struggles to accept his mother when a face-to-face confrontation with Charlotte (Tricia Helfer) brings past conflicts to present light. When a recent murder is brought to light, Lucifer takes his mother to the crime scene where a man was found murdered from a screwdriver to his neck. Charlotte pleads her innocence to Lucifer and he finds reasons to not believe her. After a few scenes of heart to heart between mother and son we see Lucifer starting to believe, but no amount of cheesy noodles will take away from the years of pain and distance between mother and son. We also saw that the killer’s choice of weapon was a screwdriver that was in the back of Charlotte’s neck.

The interaction between Dan (Kevin Alejandro) and Chloe during the episode was awkward. They tiptoe around each other as they are afraid to say the wrong thing while trying to figure out where they stand professionally and as parents. Will their professional relationship work while Dan is under the impression that Chloe is his boss?

In the meanwhile, we find Lucifer and Chloe (Lauren German) in a tizzy after Lucifer buys Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) a brand new totally expensive doll. The reason Chloe is mad is that Trixie had just gotten in trouble for destroying her doll just to get a new one. Chloe goes to Lucifer and states that she understands how hard it can be to be a mother sometimes and how you always want to make your kids happy, but buying your children everything they want will not always make them happy. Lucifer stands by his beliefs that not getting something to make your child happy is abandoning them in their time of need to which he and Chloe are at a complete impasse.

Ella (Aimee Garcia) is stunning. Her personality shines in each scene she’s in and brings a sense of relief. She can hold her own against Dan, Chloe and Lucifer even if her quirky ways interfere (like her love of the game Clue). I can’t wait to see what they have in store for Ella in the season ahead.

Towards the end of the episode we start to see a new side to Charlotte that is not one that Lucifer himself can see. While Lucifer and company investigate the murder, Charlotte is busy escaping Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) who Lucifer recruited to watch his mother while he was helping Chloe with the case after finding out he made a deal to return Charlotte to Hell.

Lucifer finds out that God didn’t actually cast him out of Heaven. It seems his mother requested that he be sent there to keep him safe after the rebellion knowing that God wanted to kill him. Everything that Charlotte says seems to be the truth until the very end when we find out not only has she received her son, but is a very good actress. We also see Lucifer still struggling with the issues he has with his mother and no matter what time isn’t going to change what has happened between them.

One of the last scenes in the episode shows Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) in front of a mirror with an internal battle raging after a heated talk between Linda Martin (Rachael Harris) and himself. As he looks at his wings, he notices he’s losing them. With the battle at hand, will Amenadiel go back to Hell or will he be staying on Earth? In the final moments of the scene, Amenadiel has you feeling things for the resident bad boy you probably shouldn’t be feeling yet are ones you just can’t help. This scene brings a light to D.B.’s ability to act and is without a doubt one of his best performances. Will caring for Linda be Amenadiel’s downfall?

Next week’s episode shows Lucifer and Chloe back to their bickering and bantering selves. While Charlotte and Amenadiel come face-to-face for the first time in ages with a threat of going back to Hell lingering over her. We also see Charlotte meeting Linda in what looks to be a deal. Possible Doctor/Patient? Will there be an epic show down between Charlotte and Amenadiel? Will Amenadiel send Charlotte back to Hell?? How will the new work dynamic change for Dan and Chloe? How will it effect the work relationship with Chloe and Lucifer?

“Lucifer” is always a shocking and exhilarating ride and one that we love to watch week to week. The cast brings their A-games and nothing but pure talent. No doubt the season will be anything but spectacular.
