Lucifer – O, Ye of Little Faith, Father

We pick up with a priest in Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) living room. Father Kinley (Graham McTavish) says he’s an investigator for the Vatican, a special branch dedicated to dealing with the supernatural. He says he doesn’t believe Lucifer’s the actual devil, not necessarily true if his pow-wows with Chloe (Lauren German) are any indication. Speaking of which, at first Lucifer’s pretty dismissive of Father Kinley because he’s not a fan of priests because #daddyissues and then he mentions Chloe. He says Chloe’s conspiring against him. Lucifer doesn’t believe the detective would ever betray him, but the priest keeps planting seeds of doubt. He tells Lucifer to be careful because God knows what she’s got planned for him.

At the police station we get a little more on Ella’s crisis of faith. She’s still pretty upset with God and tells Chloe she’s be spending her Sundays drinking, which worries Chloe because Ella used to spend them at church. Ella (Aimee Garcia) says she and the big guy are on a break. The God talk is cut short because Dan is (Kevin Alejandro) flipping out elsewhere. He and Chloe have a chat about Lucifer. Dan is convinced Lucifer exists just to torture him.

In Lux we see Lucifer and Amenadiel have a heart to heart about impending fatherhood. Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) admits he has no clue how to be a parent, but Lucifer says by being around he’s already doing better than their father. Also, a half-human and half-angel baby, this apparently hasn’t happened like ever before. This could be an issue.

At a crime scene Lucifer’s drinking, like a lot, which worries Chloe. She wants him to ditch the flask, but Lucifer says angels can’t get drunk on normal amounts of alcohol. Chloe says it’s still not a good look. Lucifer drinks anyway and Ella presents the victim. Susan the Scientist was stabbed in the back.

They question her friend Oscar. Before Susan was a scientist she was a gang member and an addict. But Oscar (Joseph Melendez) insists that she’s changed. Oscar is off and Lucifer is fishing. He wonders if Chloe has told anyone about him. Chloe says she hasn’t told a soul. Lucifer is not sure he believes her.

Linda has (Rachael Harris) got a patient convinced her toddler is a sociopath. Aside from wanting to ease the concerns, the lady isn’t painting a pretty picture of parenthood. Luckily, or unluckily, Lucifer interrupts and kicks her out. He congratulates her on the baby and wants to know what to do when someone betrays him. Normally he’d go straight to torture, but Chloe’s not just anyone. Linda says he should talk to Chloe and maybe not take the word of a perfect stranger. Linda says that accusations of betrayal can damage a relationship so he should tread lightly with Chloe.

Lucifer and Chloe follow up a lead with Susan’s boss Anders Brody (Stephen Schneider). Lucifer, while fishing, wonders if Brody’s charity work is done out of guilt. It makes Chloe wonder if he’s ever considered donating his money to charity. Lucifer brushes it off and plays bad cop with Brody, who claims he never even met Susan. But Chloe found that Anders sent her flowers. She’s guessing that Susan turned Brody down, but it is after some literal strong arming from Lucifer that Anders admits he did betray Susan. However, he won’t say how unless gets a lawyer.

Linda is in her office trying and failing to relax thanks to Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) who keeps peppering her with pregnancy questions. She says childbirth was a fun torture device in Hell. The talk of breast feeding and her vagina never being the same is clearly freaking her out, but Maze isn’t always great at taking a hint so Linda asks her to leave.

Lucifer says Brody confessing must’ve been a relief. Chloe’s not getting the insinuation and just suggests that next time Lucifer use a less violent interrogation style. Also, “I betrayed her” doesn’t fully explain what happened to Susan. Lucifer says they should talk about ways you can betray someone and then Chloe’s phone rings. It’s Ella. She says Brody didn’t kill Susan because while he was in custody the killer stuck again.

At the next crime scene we have a man named David with a similar life to Susan. He had a dark and troubled past, but he turned his life around. This bums out Dan because David and Susan were just trying to get their lives on track and now they’re dead. Chloe thinks the gang they were both in is the connection. Dan wants to look into it, but Chloe says they won’t make any headway without a warrant.

Elsewhere, Lucifer is questioning Brody. He asks him what he desires. It turns out he found out about Susan’s former drug habit and worried it was a PR nightmare, so he demoted her. However, he had a crisis of conscience when he realized Susan had been walking the straight and narrow. He went to apologize, but when he got to Susan’s apartment she was dead. Brody leaves and Chloe asks Lucifer to hang out. He’s nervous about the vagueness of the offer, but accepts.

Amenadiel is showering his baby mama with books, but Linda is insistent that she doesn’t need anything. Also, the baby is the size of a seahorse so the books aren’t necessary yet. Beyond that, Linda says she told Amenadiel as a courtesy. She’s been doing things alone her whole life so why should parenting be different? Upset, Amenadiel leaves.

Back at the station Maze is getting Trixie’s (Scarlett Estevez) opinion on what knives a baby would like best. Dan walks in and gets mad because Trixie’s not allowed to play with knives, plus it’s time to go home. Maze says the knives are for a baby not Trixie. Also, what’s got Dan all grumpy? When Trixie leaves Dan admits it’s the case that is the cause. Without a warrant it’s at a standstill. Maze says, who needs an warrant?

Before his sort of date with Chloe we see that Lucifer goes to see Father Kinley to tell him he got Chloe all wrong. She’s hasn’t tried to hurt him and she never would. Father Kinley begs to differ and tells him Chloe has small bottle sacramental oil meant to sedate the devil and is very intent on banishing Lucifer. When talking to Lucifer he says he doesn’t believe Lucifer’s the real devil, but he’s playing him.

Maze and Dan flout procedure and go to the gang’s headquarters to bust some heads. Chloe and Lucifer go to feed the homeless. Lucifer is glad she’s not roofying him, but now he’s upset that it seems like she’s trying to change him. Finally, Lucifer is at the end of his rope and demands to see Chloe’s purse. She complies and Lucifer find the vile. Lucifer threatens to drink it and Chloe screams not to. Lucifer says he knows she’s been meeting with the priest. Chloe starts to explain, but then Dan calls. He knows who the killer is and he’s about to leave.

Remember Oscar? Not so innocent as it turns out. He was a drug counselor for Susan and David and then he literally stabbed them in the back. This pushes some buttons inside Lucifer, who is feeling super betrayed. Lucifer berates Oscar. He says that Susan and David trusted him and shared the darkest parts of themselves with him and Oscar betrayed this. We get the impression he’s talking about Chloe a little. Oscar says they were trash, so he killed them. He goads Lucifer to show him who he really is and then Lucifer realizes Oscar knows about him. Chloe comes in to make the arrest, but Oscar stabs himself.

The upside is that Dan and Maze are feeling good. They had fun fighting together and Dan is not feeling so powerless. Maze tells him that he should embrace his dark side because straight and narrow Dan won’t get him anywhere. Dan seems to consider this.

Dealing with the dead Oscar has Lucifer thinking there’s a bigger picture. Lucifer says Oscar said to “show us your real face.” There’s a two-way mirror and plot twist that the house Oscar was staying in is owned by the Catholic Church. Chloe worries he’s in danger and says Lucifer needs to trust him, but Lucifer can’t.

Father Kinley wants to expose Lucifer at all costs, but his fellow priest isn’t so into the murder and mayhem. He convinced Oscar to kill Susan and David. Chloe says he’s going down for conspiracy to commit murder. Father Kinley insists he’s done nothing wrong, but his fellow priest (Jon Chaffin) disagrees. He says Father Kinley is sick and he’ll testify if that’s what the police need.

At the doctor’s office Amenadiel shows up and proposes to Linda. She says it’s sweet, but it’s also for the wrong reasons. Plus, it’s not what she needs. She just needs a friend right now.

Now for the reckoning between Lucifer and Chloe. Chloe goes to Lucifer’s apartment to tell him Father Kinley is in jail and can’t hurt him. Lucifer says it doesn’t matter that the priest wanted to hurt him. It matters that Chloe did. How can he trust her now? She tries to explain that she was lost and needed someone to confide in and she did help him for a moment and then came to her senses. Chloe says Lucifer can change, but Lucifer asks what if he can’t? He brings out his devil face and asks if Chloe can accept him, hellfire and all. Chloe says she doesn’t know. Lucifer says that’s the answer and walks away.

In lockup the other priest comes to take Father Kinley’s confession. Father Kinley says he has nothing to confess. He’s just trying to save the world. There’s a prophecy that says when the devil walks the earth and finds his first love that evil will reign. Father Kinley says even if he failed, he drove a wedge between Chloe and Lucifer. The other priest says there’s no proof Chloe is his first love. Once alone Father Kinley wonders who else could it be if not Chloe.
