Lusinate – What She Wants

By:  Lisa Steinberg

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Constantly evolving. There will always be a cool new sound out there that no one has heard yet, so I love staying on the cutting edge of things. I am heavily electronic though and I do prefer making tracks with both energy and emotion. It’s got to have a vibe to it. I have to like the way the song sounds and feels.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) I grew up listening to deadmau5 and Kaskade. Swedish House Mafia, too. I’m from Denver, so I also listened to a lot of bass music. My city is a huge influence on my sound.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “What She Wants.”

A) I started producing it when I got home from a night out with my ex-girlfriend. She invited me to go see her childhood friend open up for Benny Benassi at Temple Nightclub. We were in the booth with them and when Benassi came on it was super late. The club was closing in a half hour so he played “Satisfaction” for thirty minutes straight and left. The crowd loved it. When we were driving home I mentioned it to her and she said, “You have to give them what they want.” So, that’s what sparked the idea going into the studio that night.

Q) How did you come to connect with Phiver for the track?

A) Phiver is my best friend who happens to be a producer as well. He came over the next day when I had hit a writer’s block. I showed him what I was working on and told him I was stuck on it. He was like, “Give me the beat for a couple days.” When he came back and played me what he did I loved it. The melody you hear at the top of the song inspired me to write the lyrics and the track came together beautifully.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) It’s fun and it’s sexy. The lyrics say “she ain’t gotta try that hard” and the song itself doesn’t try too hard. It’s just meant to be a good time. And who doesn’t want that?

Q) How did you and Phiver flesh out your parts for the production of the single?

A) We kicked it back and forth (without ego) until we both liked it. We didn’t restrict each other creatively. Our mentality is that the listener’s experience is always what is most important, so as long as it’s giving them the feeling we want it to then we’re cool with it.

Q) With “What She Wants” out now, is this a prelude to a full album or EP – maybe even completely with Phiver?

A) I have a bunch of songs I’m putting out over the next few months and some of them are collabs with Phiver, so there’s definitely more to come as far as our work together goes. Next year I’ll do my first album, which I’m definitely looking forward to. It’ll be dope.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) My favorite places to perform are crowd dependent. I like crowds that aren’t too cool to dance and enjoy themselves. I’ll spin for five people the same way I do for 500,000 people. I don’t care about the size of the crowd or where it’s at. It’s all about the vibe to me.

Q) What can fans of Lusinate expect from a live performance?

A) A whole lot of energy and to leave inspired.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) There’s a lot of producers I’d love to collaborate with, but a vocalist I’m a huge fan of is Swae Lee. I’d love to do a track with him. His vocals are on point. I like Ty Dolla Sign, too.

Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) I’ve been listening to Chris Lake and Sidepiece a lot lately. I love artists that bring me back to the feeling I used to get as a teenager in the rave scene and they do that for me.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) All I have to say is…Thank you so much! I love you all. I hope I make you proud and it’s an honor to create and perform for each and every one of you. You guys are the reason I do this and it’s fulfilling to me on the deepest levels to be a part of the soundtrack to your lives.
