Zooming into a scene on a beach, Hazel (Cristin Milioti) appears to be enjoying herself in the sun, Byron (Billy Magnussen) sitting next to her. As she gets up, Byron offers her a donut hole, something she normally didn’t get during her time in the cube. While Hazel snacks on her donut holes, Byron tries to smooth things over with Hazel but quickly the conversation goes sour. Before the situation escalates further, Byron cuts the simulation and summons Bennett (Caleb Foote) over to find out what went wrong and how to fix the process. As Bennett runs back to his spot, Byron starts the Hazel simulation again. In repeating the process Byron then understands that he needs to run the simulation as realistic as possible to be comfortable with Hazel’s level.

Back in the white van, Hazel awakes to Fiffany (Noma Dumezweni) and Herringbone (Dan Bakkedahl) trying to calm her down. They have managed to scramble the signal to the chip and have five minutes to remove it before the feed goes back up. Since Hazel is awake, Byron did not go through with putting the chip in his own head. Since Hazel has decided to listen to the advice of Biff (Jon Daly) for her case, Hazel does not want the chip out at this time. Herringbone is incensed at this news but Fiffany understands that for Hazel it is about choice. It is also because Hazel does not trust either one of them since she sees them being just like Byron. Granting her wish, Fiffany lets Hazel out of the van and orders her to turn around so that Byron cannot see either one of them helping her. They leave her stranded in the middle of the desert. Fiffany ends up dropping Herringbone off at a hotel, telling him that she is going to forge her own path alone and not get him in any more trouble. She then takes off.

Once Hazel returns to the trailer super late at night, she realizes that all is quiet in the house. She finds Herbert (Ray Romano) and Diane asleep in bed and this enrages her. For Hazel she feels that her father has never cared or worried about her the way she wanted him to. Instead, Diane is cared for better than she was her entire life. This changes by the next morning when Herbert has called on a friend that refers to herself as Judith (Kym Whitley). Making sure that Byron doesn’t know who she is, Judith hides behind Herbert and would like to speak with Hazel candidly. Hazel reluctantly shares the story at first, eventually putting trust in Judith when she realizes that she is finally working with someone who understands her. When Judith excuses herself to use the bathroom, Hazel also knows that Judith had a past sexual history with Herbert and proceeds to question why they didn’t work out. Judith comes back out and says her goodbyes to Hazel and Herbert.

Back at the Gogol hub, Fiffany is giving her resignation to Byron. As part of her plan from earlier, Fiffany had plans to make sure Zelda was safe before getting out as well.  Byron appears a little surprised at Fiffany’s plans to leave and asks her to give back the sensor chip in her finger for building clearance. This causes Fiffany’s finger to bleed and Byron offers to leave his office and go get her a band-aid. While Fiffany waits Byron comes up on the screen in his real office. Instead of letting Fiffany go she has been relegated to the dreaded pasture cube. Once in the pasture, she tries to figure out how she is going to survive. Byron calls Bennett to his side and says he is tired of the simulation and ready to go out into the real world for experience. With Byron and Bennett out of the cube and decked out in some bro-like gear with their coffees, they are quickly spotted by photographers unbeknownst to them.

In an effort to connect with Hazel again, Herbert asks her what she used to do before she was taken to the cube. Hazel takes her father to the cemetery where her mother Lottie (Ione Skye) was buried, eventually finding out from Herbert that she has been moved to an alternate site. But since this was the original spot, Hazel plops down on the ground next to a grave. With her mother’s favorite beer, Hazel used to just come out here to drink and be near her. Herbert admits that he didn’t get rid of all of Lottie’s things, especially since Diane has worn her robe. In another turn of events, Herbert also reminds Hazel that just because he didn’t anything does not mean he doesn’t care. Hazel and Herbert start to repair their relationship over beers and laughing at one of the tombstones.
