Madeleine Arthur – To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I just got back from Portland where I filmed an episode of the upcoming TBS series called “Chad,” which is such a hoot to work on! I’m also excited to delve into a new project that I can’t talk about quite yet… stay tuned!
Q) What can you tease is new in To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You?
A) I hope audiences appreciate and connect with this next chapter in Lara Jean’s journey. There are upsets, discoveries, and truths to be unveiled along with tears and laughter!
Q) Where do we pick up with Christine?
A) Chris continues to be a loyal friend to LJ (Lana Condor) as always. She also starts to explore a fun, new relationship with Peter’s best friend Trevor (Ross Butler).
Q) What have you personally added to this role that wasn’t in her initial breakdown?
A) As with any role, I bring myself to it and then put my own spin on the character. I suppose you could say I’ve brought a bit of an off-beat sense of humor to Chris that felt fitting to her.
Q) Going into this second film, were you looking forward to working with anyone in particular?
A) Reuniting with the entire cast again was so exciting! We really had no idea we would get the chance to work together again. I was especially overjoyed to work with Lana a second and third time. Over the course of filming the movies, our on-screen friendship evolved as did our off-screen one, which made it such a breeze and a joy to play opposite her. She is a shining light and a committed actress; I can’t wait to watch her shows for years to come.
Q) Did the cast spend much time together off set while they were filming?
A) Yes, we did! Our whole cast loves good food, so we shared a lot of meals together… many of them being sushi! We also enjoyed going to movies and having game nights. It was one of my first times working with a mostly young cast and having the cast bonding experiences made it such a unique and fun time!
Q) What advice did director Michael Fimognari offer that you took to heart while shooting the movie?
A) Rather than advice it was more the wonderful opportunity Michael gave us to collaborate with him. He really let us (actors) know that our opinions were valid and always wanted to hear what we had to say. Almost without fail, before moving on to another scene he would make sure we were happy. He gave us a freedom that is not always present on a set. Michael is very talented, and it was an honor to have him as a director of photography as well as a director on the second and third movies. That is quite the feat for one person!
Q) What were some of your favorite scenes to film?
A) I really loved filming the wood shop scene. It really displays Chris and Lara Jean’s friendship and introduces Chris and Trevor’s playful romance. The dialogue was so fresh and it was lovely to see the girls interact on a very real level… It’s just a taste of what’s to come in the third installment. The treehouse scene was also a blast because there were so many of us on set, so it was really enjoyable to play with all the different character’s relationships and dynamics.
Q) What do you think it is about the To All The Boys franchise that has made it such a fast fan favorite?
A) I believe it’s the joy the movies bring to people! They are warm hearted and uplifting films, with relatable yet idiosyncratic characters. Also, Netflix is largely to thank for the revival of the rom-com and has given these movies a platform on which they can excel and reach a global audience.
Q) The movie came out on Feb. 12th! How did you celebrate the release?
A) I celebrated the release in NY! Jenny Han, the mastermind behind it all (without whom we wouldn’t even be talking about “To All the Boys”), hosted a pajama watching party. I can’t think of a more special way to have celebrated the launch of PS I Still Love You!
Q) You are a part of social media. Have you been enjoying the fan feedback you’ve been receiving to the movie?
A) Yes and no. I’ve been lucky thus far as it’s been very positive. I try to take the good and bad all with a grain of salt and remember that I’m proud of what we’ve made no matter what anyone chooses to say.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who was a fan and supporter of the work you do?
A) Thank you! I love what I do and I hope that the characters I play entertain you and help you look at the world a different way or remind you that you are not alone in what you are going through.
