Madison Watkins – Letting Go
By: Karen Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe my sound as soulful, happy, and heartfelt.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Some of my biggest influences in music are Bruno Mars and Tori Kelly – I feel like their voices and songs are some of the best in the world. They know how to bring their audience in and also sing their face off!
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “You Won’t.”
A) I was going through a really hard season with depression and anxiety, and I sat down to write a song about it. God really got me through that season, so I wrote about his love never changing, regardless of the circumstances I was going through.
Q) “You Won’t” is a great follow up to “Goodbye” and “Spin.” What do you think it is about “You Won’t” that fans connect to?
A) I think fans connect to the meaning of the song because they have someone in their life, or God, that has never left them in hard times. That was the point of writing this, because I wanted people to feel seen, known and loved.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video for “You Won’t” has a message through the lighting of the music video. It starts blue and turns sunny throughout the music video, exemplifying my journey, going through depression and anxiety and coming out on the other side.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I will either hear a melody or go through something and write a little note on my phone about it. I write each song very differently, and each one comes to me very differently. They all have one thing in common… my heart.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I have my hand in every single part of my career, including production. I always know how I want a song to sound. I love working with my producers to make that come to life.
Q) Your EP Letting Go is out this week! What are some themes you’ll be exploring on it?
A) I explore so many different things on this new EP – living like a child, trusting God, letting go of the past, saying goodbye to things that don’t serve you!
So many good nuggets of truth! [smiles]
Q) Is there a particular track on the EP that holds a special place in your heart and what makes it so significant for you?
A) I think the title track “Letting Go” is a song that means a lot to me because I wrote it when I was really changing my entire life. I was moving from Los Angeles to Nashville and letting go of everything I knew in my life. The song really allowed me to process my emotions, and I hope the fans will feel the same way.
Q) What emotion or message do you hope lingers with listeners of this EP?
A) I want them to feel seen and leave listening to the EP having hope!
Q) How do you plan to celebrate the release of your album this week?
A) I am having a party for thirty of my closest fans! They are flying in from all over the country to hear the EP before it comes out, eat amazing food and they will hear a performance from me!!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I think the person at the top of my list right now is probably Tori Kelly or Forrest Frank!
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to a lot of Lauryn Hill lately, I think she’s one of the best artists that has ever lived. My favorite part about her music is how real it is!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would love to say thank you so much to all the people that support me and my music. You are the reason why I get to do what I love every day. And I hope I can continue to make music that connects to your heart. I love you.!!!
