Malachi Gagnon – Stay
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sound is pretty folk-pop/rock. I find it hard to fully pinpoint the sound because I create each song around the vibe of it rather than sticking to an exact sound. You’ve been compared to the likes of Noah Kahan and Zach Bryan.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Both of those are huge inspirations for me, along with Bon Iver, The Beatles, Gregory Alan Isakov and Phoebe Bridgers.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Stay.”
A) “Stay” isn’t really about a person…It’s about a feeling that we all experience. There have been plenty of times in my life that I wish I could go back to and tell myself to live in the moment! “Stay” is just a story built around that sentiment.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think we all can relate to wishing we could relive a moment or go back to some place or someone.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I don’t need music to write my songs. Usually, I play my guitar while writing. I’ve actually written all of the songs I’ve released on the guitar first and then built a whole track around the guitar and my voice.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Me and my producer, Spencer Bradham, are both very involved. The farther into my career I get, the more familiar I get with the producing side of things. I’ve spent a lot of time producing tracks with my friends just to grow in that area recently.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) My goal is to do a larger project sometime in the near future – maybe this year or next year.
Q) You started crafting music at such a young age – just fourteen years old! What advice would you give to up and coming artists?
A) From my little experience I have in this field I’d say that you have to stay consistent. I play my guitar and write songs every chance I can get.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Either Post Malone or Bon Iver – both are huge influences and I think either one of them and I could make something special.
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Frank Ocean has been on repeat as of late. I love his production style and writing so much. You can tell when you listen to his music he just loves to make it and I really appreciate and relate to that.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you for listening to my music! I genuinely wouldn’t be here without you. You’re literally making my dreams come true by listening.
