Malcolm David Kelley – Set Adrift
Q. What are the current projects that you have recently worked on?
A. I did this movie called Knights of the South Bronx, costarring with Ted Danson and a couple of other kids. It was directed by Allen Hughes and it comes out on December 6th on A&E. That was real fun to work on because I was with a whole bunch of other kids just hanging around and having fun. My character’s a class clown and he gets picked on a little bit after school by some bullies and stuff like that.
Q. With season 2 of “Lost” beginning, how has Walt’s character evolved this season?
A. He doesn’t know what to do because he was taken by the others and he’s scared. He realizes how much he misses his dad and how well they were getting to know each other. He’s kind of sad about that.
Q. “Lost” recently won an Emmy, what are your feelings on the win?
A. I’m excited about that, and everybody in the cast is excited and it’s just amazing that I’m thirteen and I’ve got an Emmy under my belt. It’s just amazing.
Q. What originally made you want to be a part of the show “Lost”?
A. Just acting period, they offered an audition and I thought it would be cool and they told me it would be filmed in Hawaii if I get it. I was just happy about that and I went in and gave it my all and came out the winner.
Q. Do you have a most memorable moment from filming “Lost”?
A. Probably when we were doing the raft stuff, that was so much fun. That was my first time being on the water like that. The waves were just incredible and rocking the boat and stuff like that. That was my first time being on a boat in the sea so that was pretty cool.
Q. The cast has a lot of chemistry on screen. Is it that way off as well?
A. Yeah, we’re all together and we all have fun and hang out and everything. On camera, off camera, we don’t know anyone up there so we have to stick together. We’re like one big family out there.
Q. What is it about “Lost” that you think draws in so many viewers?
A. It’s so mysterious and you never know what’s going to happen. There are so many great actors that are working on the show and JJ Abram’s is great, there are great characters on the show.
Q. How do you feel being the youngest member of the cast?
A. It gets kind of lonely some times but some of the other cast mates like Harold Perrineau and Daniel Kim, they have kids that I hang out with. I hang out with them but I’m used to hanging out with adults so it’s not that bad for me. Sometimes it does get lonely because I miss my friends at school and I miss my mom and my family and my dad and everybody. So, it’s hard.
Q. What is a typical day of filming like for you?
A. Well, usually they’ll call me the night before and tell me about my scenes. Then the next day in the morning I’ll get up and they’ll send a van to pick me up. We have about an hour drive to the beach and I can only work on the set for nine hours because I’m a minor. I am on set for nine hours hanging out or going to school. Then I’m on my way home, on my way back to the hotel.
Q. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
A. Well, I met some friends up there in Hawaii and they go to school and stuff like that. I hang out with them and play basketball with them, so that’s cool that they let me hang out with them.
Q. What is your latest obsession? Are you into any particular sport, book or activity?
A. Well, TV wise I’m really into this TV show called “Punk’D,” Ashton Kutcher’s show. That show is so funny because he punks everybody. Hobby wise I like collecting shot glasses and playing basketball a lot and hanging out with my friends.
Q. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A. Thank you everybody for supporting me and helping me out and getting me through everything that I got through. I am going to keep on going, look out for more of Malcolm David Kelley!
