Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I definitely put myself in the Adult Contemporary category. My music is very pop/soul/songwriter.Artists I think I’d tour well with are Sara Bareilles, Gavin DeGraw, India Arie and Tori Kelly – people who have truth in their music and messages, but are still radio friendly.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) I have quite a few influences musically. Growing up I listened to a lot of legends like Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. Then, the older I got I was exposed to performers like Audra McDonald and Heather Headley who made me want to get the best training possible so I could sing forever. Then, during college I started to find the sound I wanted for my artistry and I latched onto Gavin DeGraw’s music.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “The La La Song.”

A) I’ve been so focused over the last few years on writing songs for social justice causes and empowerment that I really just wanted to write a simple love song to make people feel good! It’s become my norm to use music as a means for conversation and inspiration to others, but I wanted to write something that was easy for people to sing along to and just listen to in the car or on a morning jog. Music evokes so many emotions within us and feeling happy is one of the most important ones. I also wanted to write something simple for my husband!

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think people always love a song that makes them feel good and that is easy to sing along to so I think that’s why people have gravitated towards it.

Q) The song was written about your husband. How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) I wanted to give people a sneak peek into our life. So, it was fun to do a home-video style music video that shows our interactions with each other and how much fun we have as a couple.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) It really depends on the song and the mood I’m in. Sometimes music comes first and I just sit at the piano free-styling with rhythms and chord progressions and other times I start writing lyrics like a poem. Eventually, it all comes together to create a final piece of work.

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I am very involved in the production aspect of my music. Going in, I know pretty much exactly what I want but I’m always open to collaboration and new ideas. I hire producers because I know they can enhance what I want but they are always respectful of the sound and vibe I want for each particular song.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Malynda Hale performance?

A) I think fans can expect a lot of honesty and vulnerability. I love sharing my heart on stage and connecting with people. My lyrics are very important to me and I want people to feel what I feel when I’m singing lyrics that mean so much to me.

Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?

A) Currently, I’m only working on singles. I have three or so more singles I’m going to release leading up to the summer then I’ll start thinking about another full album or EP. I like doing singles because it gives people something new consistently.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) Truly anywhere I get to sing my music to a listening audience is my favorite place. This being my fulltime job is truly a blessing and I’m just grateful for every opportunity I get.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I’ve been saying this for the last 10 years, but if I don’t collaborate with Gavin DeGraw soon, I’m going to burst!

Q) You recently launched a new podcast with Karmel Humphrey called #WeNeedToTalk! How did the two of you come together to work on this?

A) I started #WeNeedToTalk as a live panel discussion series to tackle specific issues that needed to be talked about. I thought doing a podcast would give me the opportunity to take those conversations further and deeper. Karmel has always been someone I’ve respected. I love his outlook and views, so it seemed like the best pairing for this project.

Q) In the current political climate, what are some hot topics you’ll be covering on your podcast?

A) The tagline for the show is “Politics, Entertainment and Culture” – our goal is to cover anything that falls under those categories.

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from tuning in to the podcast?

A) I hope that listeners feel like they’ve gained knowledge, heard different perspectives, and feel compelled to continue the conversation with other people they know.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Thank you for sticking by me all these years and I can’t wait to show you what I’m working on next.
