Maria Lynn – Jaded
By: Alejandra Gil M.
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I’d say my sound is pop, singer songwriter with a little sprinkle of hip hop. Basically, a VIBE.
Q) Your new single “Jaded” is out now, what was the writing process like for the song did you have the lyrics or the music first?
A) I sat down with Armen Paul and Jack Laboz and explained to them the idea of being jaded in a relationship, as that’s what I was feeling in my relationship at the time, and I went more in depth of what I was feeling and we wrote the song on the spot! Armen was originally there to write with me for my project, but after hearing his music, meeting him and catching his vibe I knew I wanted him on the song.
Q) “Jaded” is really about Illustrating a painful experience of intense emotions, and how it ultimately that can leave you feeling empty while being aware that a relationship is toxic, but not being able to let go. What was your headspace like while creating the song?
A) I wasn’t in the best head space as I was in deep in a toxic relationship, but I was clear on what I was going through and feeling at the time. Creating music is an outlet for me, so it’s always a release to be able to express myself through song.
Q) The song was released via Repost with NYC-based singer Armen Paul. How did the two of you connect and what was it like working with them?
A) Jack Laboz connected Armen and I! Jaded was actually the first song we created together, we clicked instantly, Armen really understood what I was expressing, and he helped me capture the emotions beautifully. Soon after we wrote “Why Do I”.
Q) A lyric music video was also posted with the song, with animation design by Alexa Kazun, Noelle Song and Kassandra Thomas. How involved were you in developing the concept for it?
A) For this lyric video Alexa came up with this incredible sketched out, hand drawn idea of what she saw for the video after listening to me explain the song and my story behind it, and after listening to the song itself. I gave her a few ideas, but I’d say for the most part Alexa took the reins on that one and I was floored with her talent and creativity. It was overall a great team effort, seeing Alexa, Noelle and Kassie come together was amazing! They really helped take the song to the next level.
Q) The track takes listeners through a devastating heartbreak while working through the complexity of a toxic relationship. What do you hope people take away from it?
A) I hope that people listen to this record and know that they are not alone, to anyone who has gone through a toxic relationship, all the emotions, the pain and emptiness that comes with it. I understand that pain. It’s okay and you will make it out! Don’t stay silent, talk to someone, what you feel is valid. Music was my someone.
Q) Your new single follows “Why Do I.” which was your first release with Repost. You said that is a sequel to it hoping that after those feelings of emptiness listeners know that they are not alone in it. Why was that important to you?
A) I actually wrote “Jaded” before “Why Do I” we just released it in a different order! It is so important to let anyone who is listening know that they are not alone because being in such toxic relationships can be extremely painful and hard to get out of. While in the thick of my relationship I began to self-sabotage, I felt so alone and hurt and low, a low that no one deserves to feel yet everyone feels one way or another, and we all need to be here for each other especially in those dark times. At the end of the day, we are all one and we can all relate to one another on some level and it’s important to make that known!
Q) Your music explores self-discovery with lyrics that dive deep into experience with relationships, mental health, belonging and purpose. Has there been any specific feedback online that has stood out?
A) Just having people reach out to me, expressing that they can relate to what I’ve gone through. People that appreciate the vulnerability because they are vulnerable, too. I think that Is such a profound and beautiful thing to do.
Q) In addition to releasing new music, you´ve been performing throughout New York City as part of The Afterglow Concert Series in partnership with Equity Residential and D´Angelico Guitars. What can fans expect from a live Maria Lynn performance?
A) Authenticity! My performances are intimate and real. I talk about my songs, why I wrote them, who I am and I why I do what I do. Expect a beautiful performance and to get to know me a lot better! They are a blast.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) My dream is to collaborate with Justin Bieber. I would also love to collaborate with Pink Sweat$. He’s an old friend of mine that I hope to re-connect with one day soon!
Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of you and your music?
A) THANK YOU! I love you all, you guys are beautiful, and I hope to make your days a little better with my music! Also, never be afraid to reach out. I’m always down for a great conversation.
