Matt LeGrand – Message in a Bottle
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the story behind the music video for your song “Message in A Bottle.”
A) So, this music video is literally the definition of making something great out of a sad situation. With COVID it’s been hard to get people together to shoot music videos. The team had a great idea of making an animated video! A character of me was drawn and made all of my “becoming a Disney character” dreams come true! This video takes you on a journey with my alter ego “Matthieu.” The inspiration for the female lead happens to be one of my favorite female recording artists. Just a dream.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think that people connect with being infatuated with someone and maybe possibly rushing things a bit or not being sure how to share your feelings. It’s a song about the intricacies and false ideas we tend to attach to a brand-new relationship. Who hasn’t been there! Am I right?
Q) What lyrics do you connect to the most in this song?
A) “I’m not crazy, I’m just a little too caught up on ya lately” because we’ve all been stalkers and we’ve all been there at some point!
Q) How are you able to allow yourself to be vulnerable in your music?
A) With tons of therapy! [laughs] I think that doing important self-work is one of the keys to allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Vulnerability requires so much strength and It’s something that needs to be practiced. There’s no better way to practice it than pouring every emotion into a song!! It’s hard work but I feel that it’s a necessity for a healthy lifestyle.
Q) What was it like recording this song in the studio?
A) This song was probably one of the most fun songs to sing! I remember getting tongue tied quite a few times though because there are just so many words! Even though we were in a dark studio, we were really on the beach during this whole song!
Q) What was your favorite part about creating this song?
A) Fun fact alert: Finding out that one of the songwriters, Dub Shakes, is a descendant of the great William Shakespeare was incredible. Hence the names “Dub” and “Shakes.” I’m a people person, so my favorite part of the creative process is meeting interesting people and being able to work with them. There is really no better feeling than landing on the correct instrument, melody, lyric or riff. Entering the creative world with others also takes a ton of vulnerability but is highly rewarding!
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) My debut EP is currently out right now streaming on everything and anything! Working towards a full album next! Please go to Spotify to hear “Message in A Bottle.”
Q) With concerts currently on hold, what do you miss most about being on stage?
A) So, I’m kind of a live stage/performance nerd. I absolutely love all that goes into making a live show happen. It’s funny because on performance days when I should be getting myself ready and focused, I’m always in a crew person’s ear asking them, “What does that do?” Most of all though is obviously seeing real life people. Seeing others enjoy themselves is at the heart of why I do this and always will be.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s important because Matt LeGrand’s world is a family, and you keep in touch with family. They get to see how I’m doing all the time, so I need to hear how they’re doing and what they’re feeling.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you for believing and allowing art to take you to wonderful places. Thank you for allowing me to be one of thousands of great artists to take you there. Keep supporting musicians, especially local ones, and I’ll see you at a Matt LeGrand concert very soon!
