Mayfair Witches – Cover the Mirrors
By: Mariah Thomas
Lasher (Jack Huston) and a mysterious man are walking through a misty park at night. The man’s intent is sinister, and we soon learn he is a vampire. After the initial standoff, the two sit on a bench together and Lasher reveals more insight on what he remembers. He genuinely does not seem to remember his own sinister past. The vampire tells Lasher that he can smell him and it’s a smell he’s never smelt before saying, “You’re a new thing. New rules. Listen to your appetite, your instincts.” The vampire then runs off into the night to hunt.
Rowan (Alexandra Daddario) watches closely as Cortland (Harry Hamlin) calls the family to gather them. He uses the guise of a curse upon the family and Rowan having created a protection spell for everyone to drink. He reveals to her that many people have asked about Lasher and look forward to seeing him. They are not aware of his killing nature yet. Cortland reminds Rowan that these people have waited their entire lives for this moment. If she tells the truth, they will find ways to blame her. Millie (Geraldine Singer) appears to Rowan to tell her Cortland is right. The family will place blame on her. “I hope when the moment comes, you are strong enough to go through with it.” Millie is happy to know Rowan finally sees Lasher’s true nature but is hesitant to trust her.
Ciprien (Tongayi Chirisa) reveals Alicia’s (Leslie Castay) last memory was of Lasher watching her die with a surprised look on his face. Moira (Alyssa Jirrels) tells Cip and Albrecht (Dennis Boutsikaris) she received a call from Cortland. Rowan is using her mother’s death to drive home the idea of a curse and the family needing protection. Moira is hesitant to go because she doesn’t want to see Rowan spin her mom’s death into something that benefits her. Albrecht tells her in order to catch Lasher that is what she needs to do and promises she won’t be alone.
While putting together a protection spell, Dolly (Charlayne Woodard) tells her they need to find a specific family recipe that will actually work. Rowan says she doesn’t care if it works, just that it gets people there and Dolly inquires why. Rowan tells her plan to use everyone gathered as a trap to lure and capture Lasher. Although she knows how she will do it, she has not thought of what to do after. Tension arises between Cortland and Dolly as she says she would have kept him stoned in the basement. Cortland attempts to convince Rowan to allow him out of the house to go back to his place to change. She immediately refuses. As he lurks around the house, he sneakily moves a phone to his room and calls Albrecht who denies his call.
Cip and Albrecht are posted across the street from the Mayfair house awaiting Lasher to be lured. Albrecht lets it slip, the plan is to capture Lasher and take him to a safe house. He realizes there is a lot of the plan he is not being let in on. “I used to walk by that house when I was a kid wondering about the people inside. Then I become the people inside. I’m part of their story.”
Lasher roams the streets at night, listening to his instincts. He winds up in a bar drawn to a woman. As he sits, her son hands her a phone to see a call from “Dolly.” This confirms she is Dolly’s sister, Evelyn (K. Steele), who they could not get a hold of earlier to inform her of the “curse.” However, she denies the call and takes Lasher’s order.
Rowan is able to see if Lasher is near based on the strength of her powers. She attempts to light candles using her newfound power of fire, but is unsuccessful. Jojo (Jen Richards) comes over with food for the family. She requests Rowan’s help with Daphne (Olive Abercrombie) as she struggles with the sudden loss of her mom. At this moment, Rowan goes outside to the swings and sits with her. She relates to her about also losing her mother. Daphne inquires what happened to both of them. She is able to ease her mind and bring some comfort.
Cortland attempts to speak to Jojo, but she refuses. In the chaos of family arrival, the Mayfair family prepares the house for the spell. Moira finally shows up and embraces a frazzled Daphne.
Rowan has a list of family members who have not shown up and checks it over with Dolly. She tells her she hasn’t been able to get ahold of her sister, but will call again. Rowan gets a call from Lark (Ben Feldman) who tries to see her once more before he is set to head out. She convinces him to cancel his flight saying her “family drama” should be cleared up by tomorrow.
Rowan makes the rounds to introduce herself to family she has yet to meet. She meets Lucy’s father, who tells her Lucy was looking forward to meeting her and has plans of going to medical school. Currently, she is missing. However, Rowan knows the truth, Lasher already killed her and she hid the body. She excuses herself to the bathroom and gets her guilt out about Lucy.
Back at the bar, Evelyn jokingly calls Lasher “Mr. Milk” due to him ordering just that. He gets tense and grabs her saying he wants her to sit with him while he drinks it. She is immediately put off and he tries a new form of charming her. This earns him a slap. So far, his tactic has been to seduce a mayfair woman and somehow through their connection, they die. He now faces the reality of it not working.
Jojo sits next to Rowan and tells her Cortland is undermining her to the family to regain power. She sees him doing just that and joins the conversation to steer the narrative. People now grow antsy about wanting to meet Lasher. Before she can give an excuse, Moira stirs the pot and tells everyone he isn’t there. She confirms this and panic moves through the crowd as people wonder if he is responsible for the deaths in the family. Cortland swoops in and shifts the conversation while Rowan pulls Moira aside for a private conversation. Rowan tells her she knows Lasher is responsible and her reason for lying to the others is to protect them. Rowan claims her plan is to kill Lasher, and Moria doesn’t believe her for one second. Rowan allows her to read her mind for clarity. Moria is unable to read Rowan’s mind because of her stronger powers. Rowan reveals she knows she has been talking to Cip and says in order for this to work, they can’t intervene. Moira calls Cip and rushes to the stakeout house to inform him that Lasher is missing. She confides Rowan’s plan to Cip and expresses she wants to believe her but isn’t sure. Cip says he would like to as well, but they must go through with the plan. Moria is hesitant, but puts her trust in Cip over Rowan.
In the kitchen Dolly continues to put together a protection spell. Rowan asks for any updates from her sister and she reveals she hasn’t been able to get through. However, she’s spoken to her nephew and her sister is aware of the gathering and importance. Evelyn does not want to be near Cortland, so she is choosing to stay away. Rowan enlists another family member to pick her up and looks around for Cortland. She finds him in an argument with Jojo. She soon interrupts the conversation and pulls Jojo out to lock Cortland in his father’s room.
At the bar Lasher remains lurking around Evelyn. She tells him they’re closed and he locks the door. He stalks over to her and she calls out for her son. Lasher attempts to hurt them but is overpowered. When the sent family member arrives, the police are taking Evelyn’s report. With this news, Rowan tells the family Lasher killed two family members. Lucy’s father asks if the same happened to her, and she confirms. Daphne feels betrayed that Rowan lied to her and runs outside. As she opens the door, Rowan and Jojo try to stop her. Rowan accidentally casts a spell that prevents them from leaving and she knows Lasher is close.
Lasher limps to the house as Rowan walks outside to see him in the middle of the street. Moria walks out and tells her to just do it [kill him]. Lasher whispers “please, mother” to attempt to persuade her to spare him. Before she can, Cip runs out and mists her with a spell that weakens her body. Two black cars pull up and take Lasher away while she watches disoriented. In her haze, she realizes Moira betrayed her with the help of Cip.
