Melissa Ponzio – Teen Wolf: The Movie
By: Paige Zinaman
Q) Teen Wolf: The Movie is out now! What was that like receiving the phone call that they were bringing it back?
A) That phone call from Jeff [Davis] was such a surprise and so sensational at the same time! To be asked back along with all my other castmates knowing what a great time it was going to be was a huge gift. To reprise our roles, to work with beloved cast and crew again, to know the fans would be so happy for Teen Wolf: The Movie, it’s been over a year in the making and we are happy to have it out for the world to see.
Q) Without giving too much away, what can you tease about where we pick up with the movie and with Melissa?
A) Spoiler Alert: We find Mama McCall hard at work at Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital! She should own that joint by now. But, seriously, the writers gave us time progression in story and within our characters to meet them in new places in life. She has been hard at work both personally and professionally. And we find the relationship between her and Scott (Tyler Posey) in a much more rich, adult place.
Q) There is a new enemy in town and Scott remains an alpha. What does this new threat mean to the McCalls as a family?
A) It means all hands on deck when called upon. It’s a powerful thing when you call upon the entirety of your pack, and we get to see that in the Teen Wolf
Q) What I loved most about the show was the relationship between Melissa and Scott. What can we expect to see from that mother/son relationship in the film?
A) When you are a young parent, you hopefully get the experience of having your child as an adult for longer…and your relationship as adults can be so magnificent because you get to enjoy the person you created longer. I hope that makes sense…I think we see how the mom/son relationship has developed into a new adult place between them. With the same love, support, respect as before, just deeper.
Q) Returning means reuniting with beloved friends and working with new allies. Were you looking forward to sharing a scene(s) with someone(s) in particular?
A) We had several group scenes this time around and, for me, those were the best days to work. Working the scene with people you trust and have fun with is always a joy. As a fan of the show, it was so fun to have Lydia (Holland Roden) and Jackson (Colton Haynes) back together.
Q) There is a lot of stunt work that goes into the series. Will we see Melissa picking up a weapon to bring take down the big bad?
A) Yes! Yes! YES! This time around the entire pack was called upon to help defend and defeat. I’ve handled weapons on other shows, so it was interesting to have this layer added.
Q) From the series to the film, I’m sure there has been a growth in who Melissa is as a mother as well as an individual, what would you say has been your favorite part of returning to Melissa McCall?
A) Literally being able to return at all. It’s no secret we all wished “Teen Wolf” could have kept going as a TV series, we had so much more story to tell. Not every show is graced with a progression like this, we are all so grateful. And to know that all one hundred episodes will have a home on Paramount+ in addition to the movie, now our supportive fandom and new friends can start from the beginning again!
Q) What were some of your favorite scenes that you can tease or memorable moments from working on Teen Wolf: The Movie?
A) I think Jeff Davis and the writers did their best to allow each character to have a substantial moment within the movie. There’s a heartfelt scene between Mama McCall and Scott that’s special. And without giving it away, there are several group scenes that are very poignant. Linden Ashby is going to make you cry in one.
Q) “Teen Wolf” fans are some of the most passionate fans, being a part of social media, are you excited for the instant feedback you’ll get from fans?
A) I hope everyone enjoys this movie as much as we did making it. Yes – I always look forward to what our fandom thinks and feels on any given day, but especially the day the movie drops!
Q) What are the other recent projects that you have been busy working on?
A) Bridgewater Podcast is back with Season 2 and I’ve been lucky to be a part of the formidable cast. Misha Collins, Karan Soni and I are back together along with Alan Tydyk and Tricia Helfer. We had a lot of fun together. And I’m super excited to have worked with Kevin Hart on his latest Roku project Die Harter. I play his agent in the film with lots of twists and turns.
Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters of your work?
A) I’m reminded every day from interactions in person and online how much an actor’s work can impact someone’s life or experience. I’m grateful to have the support and love of every fandom I’m lucky to be a part of. I hope to continue to make you guys proud and I thank you from a very full heart.
