Mia McGhee – Growing Up McGhee
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How were you approached by UP TV to create “Growing Up McGhee?”
A) We owe our relationship with UP the production company we work with, Figure 8. Figure 8 thought it would be a perfect match and they were right! UP is all about family and so are we!
Q) Were there certain parts of your life that you deemed off limits to the camera?
A) As crazy as it sounds, nothing is off limits. It’s not always easy and I’m always thinking about how this will impact our family in the future, but our hope is that the show encourages other families to stay positive, appreciate each moment (even the hard ones) and press on. The only way we’ll be able to do this is to stay real. For better or worse, we are as real as it gets!
Q) This season we are watching the kids struggle being held back in Kindergarten. How are they doing these days?
A) I have to be honest, it was hard news to hear and we didn’t make this decision until we accumulated countless hours of prayer, talking to the teachers and each other. Finally, we had peace that repeating kindergarten was the right choice for the kids and today, they are all thriving! Kids are more resilient than we give them credit for. We’re grateful for a new year and a new start!
Q) Have the kids gotten used to having cameras on them all of the time?
A) The kids genuinely look forward to the crew coming to the house. I don’t even think they notice the cameras. It’s more about the people behind them. Our crew has become part of our family.
Q) As a twin myself, my sister is my best friend. Do the kids tend to make the same friends or do they mostly stick together?
A) It’s the same for our girls Madison and Olivia, they are best friends and stick together. If one meets a new friend, it’s just understood that the girls are a package deal! The boys on the other hand, tend to make some of their own friends.
Q) Elijah is the tallest of the bunch and it was great to see you help him celebrate that. What is one piece of advice you would give to each of your kids?
A) Stick together! We want our kids to always be close to each other so we tell them often, “You are stronger together.”
Q) You are a part of social media. What kind of fan feedback have you received from being a part of the show?
A) We cannot thank the people who watch the show and follow us on social media enough because while our hope is to encourage others, the love and support we receive is so encouraging to us. We’re just overwhelmed and incredibly blessed.
Q) What were some of your most memorable moments from filming this season?
A) One of the best parts about having our life filmed is that we have a time capsule we can reference and live those moments again because with six kids, it’s hard to remember it all. This season, I loved seeing the kids carve their own pumpkins and getting the Christmas tree and decorating it is something I’ll never forget.
Q) Is there anything you want to be sure fans know about you and this season of “Growing Up McGhee?”
A) Yes, we appreciate each and every one of you. Again, we cannot thank you enough for your love and support. As far as the show itself goes, there’s never a dull moment! We’re working hard to make sure we appreciate every moment (even the challenging ones) with each other.
Q) What do you think it is about the show that has made it a fan favorite show?
A) I think they might watch at first because they’re wondering how we manage to survive raising sextuplets, but I think they stick with us because they see that we have many of the same challenges as they do. We’re all just trying to figure it out. We’re not perfect and we don’t always get it right, but love certainly covers a multitude.
