Interviews
Molly Moore – Shadow Of The Sun
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Wavy, soulful and honest.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I really loved organic/pop music growing up. R&B and hip-hop have always had a special place in my heart. That being said, acts like Local Natives, Bon Iver, Simon & Garfunkel, Bastille, Muse, Alanis Morissette, Imogen Heap, Frank Sinatra, Lily Allen, Tegan & Sara, The Bird & The Bee, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Kanye West…I could go on and on.
Q) Your new song is “Peace of My Heart.” Talk about the concept behind it.
A) Someone told me this recently, “When you’re in love, you can fight against the rest of the world, but not against each other.” It’s about the give and take in a relationship. It’s about being afraid of giving up the control over your emotions, but knowing you don’t really have a choice.
Q) What is it about the song that you think fans are connecting to?
A) I think it’s a very relatable feeling – passion that hurts. The vulnerability of love is terrifying. I find it fascinating to write about because nothing else really unravels us the way that love does.
Q) How does the video play to the message of the song?
A) I made the treatment and directed it myself with the help of a friend and my boyfriend, Brandyn [Burnette]. It plays directly to the message of the song because it’s a glimpse into reality. It’s very raw and I think after seeing it people should have an idea of where I’m coming from.
Q) What is your process like for writing music? Do you need music before you can write lyrics?
A) Not at all. I find inspiration in many different ways. A lot of times I’ll hear a word or phrase that I like and go from there. I write tons of lyrics in the notepad on my phone, too. But I do like to freestyle while playing guitar, that’s the most freeing way to write I think. Sometimes I write to tracks, too.
Q) Where do you get the inspiration for your lyrics?
A) Life. The battle between our higher/lower and inner/outer selves. Good and evil.
Q) What is the feel and vibe like for your upcoming EP Shadow of The Sun?
A) Overall, I think the feel is moody, lush, ethereal, cinematic and real.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m very vocal with what I want production-wise. I like tribal and hip-hop inspired beats that are left of center, minimal production and electronic and organic elements. Also, I really like to layer vocals.
Q) What would you say were your favorite songs off the EP?
A) “Shadow of The Sun” and “Peace of My Heart.”
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would really love to collaborate with Max Martin or Greg Kurstin.
Q) What can fans do you to help promote your music?
A) Support! That’s really the best way to help promote. Posting it on social media is a huge, amazing way to spread the word. Also, sending requests to your local radio station (and their Twitter accounts) doesn’t hurt!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s huge because you have a personal relationship with people that are listening to your music. It’s such a beautiful thing that technology is where it’s at for this very reason. I can connect with somebody across the world that’s going through something and doesn’t have anyone to talk to. That’s pretty awesome.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your music?
A) Thank you!! You keep me alive.
