Interviews
Molly Warburton – Midnight Hour
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Indie pop – Imagine if Fleetwood Mac and Sigrid had a baby then they’d make the same sounds as me.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) KT Tunstall, Sam Fender, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Maggie Rogers, HAIM
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Midnight Hour.”
A) “Midnight Hour” narrates a moment of realization after identifying the things in your life that are holding you back. Warburton shares, “’Midnight Hour’ was written about two friends of mine. The song is about being in a dead-end relationship with someone but having a moment of madness with someone else in your friendship group – a so-called ‘stranger’ in the song. When you can’t stop thinking about what you could have and fantasizing about how young and free it would make you feel but in reality it isn’t something that would work or something anyone could ever know about.”
Inspired by the likes of Haim, Jade Bird and Maisie Peters, “Midnight Hour” showcases twinkling synths, euphoric harmonies and emotion-fueled vocals, as the upbeat dance-worthy anthem shines bright with a new-found confidence and self-worth. The lyrics, “Been stuck in the midnight hour, now I’m dancing till the sun” highlights the feeling of being trapped but eventually being set free and finally being able to really express your true feelings.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) The uplifting feel/sound to the track but also the story is something everyone can relate to at some point in life.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The accompanying music video is filmed in a “typical” date setting and represents the different feelings and sides to people’s relationships and how they might try and cover things up. The fun and playful video shows the singer dressed in different outfits and colors, reflecting the battle of mixed emotions when going through a difficult time.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Much like all my songs, I have lyrics written everywhere and random voice notes which help put together the song. Usually, it starts with a line or chorus that I have written and love then taking other lyrics from said notebook the song comes together. After I go back and forward in producing it with Jeremy (Producer) and bits of changes lyrically and melodically we finally get to a place where the song sounds like what we have today.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Absolutely, we work together with myself and my producer on the tracks. I like to see what direction he takes first, then we spend hours going to and fro with different ideas and sounds.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes, the plan is that some of my latest release along with some new tracks are going to make up and album at some point soon.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) From small shows in my hometown to Shepherd Bush Empire and Big Festivals it’s true to say I LOVE performing. Each venue has a different meaning for me, but some of the most intimate can definitely be the most precious. You really can connect with the audience and intimate gigs but then on the other hand the big shows are so fun and give you an adrenaline like no other.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Love to collaborate with Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus and bring out a pop banger but then always been a dream to write with Stevie Nicks.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Massively digging a band called Big Red Machine which is Bon Iver collabing with other artists like Taylor Swift and Fleet Foxes to create BANGERS.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I think anyone wants to know that fans are enjoying their music, which is the main reason for social media for myself. The different platforms let you connect and find new fans and express yourself to them. Been really enjoying making TikToks at the moment. I feel it’s taken a few years to grasp but love it now.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) It’s been a long journey and I can’t express how happy and proud of what I produce and to have such loving and supporting fans means the world to me. The thought that my music connects with people in one way or another inspires me to do more. So, thank you for everything, maybe this is just the start of something BIG.
