This week’s episode of Mom was a heavy one.  The episode starts with our ladies at their AA meeting. Jill (Jaime Pressly) is sharing. Everyone assumes that Jill is going to complain about superficial things because she mostly talks about her money. Not this time. She is heartbroken because today is the anniversary of her mother’s suicide. As Jill shares her memories with the group, she chokes up tears and is unable to finish. Bonnie (Allison Janney) is next to share. It seems that Bonnie was not listening to Jill at all because she talks about how she was annoyed because she had to wait in line in the post office because she missed the package delivery. She even says without thinking, “I want to kill myself.” Everyone stared at her stunned by her insensitivity to Jill’s grief.
After the meeting, Bonnie said that Christy (Anna Faris) should warned her about what Jill said. Christy in turn says that Bonnie needs to be a better listener. When the women are at the diner, everyone wants to know if Jill is doing okay. Jill tells them that this year is harder than others because she is the same age as her mom was when she died. Jill decides to leave. Everyone, except Bonnie (who is focused on her sandwich), wants Jill to stay but she rather would be alone. After she leaves, the women are committed to showing Jill that they will be there for her in her time of need.
When Bonnie and Christy are sleeping, they hear a knock on the door. It’s Jill and she has brought gifts. Jill is eager to get rid of her stuff because she realizes that does not make her happy and she wants to simplify her life. Christy encourages Jill to talk about how she is feeling while Bonnie is interested in the free expensive stuff. The next day, Marjorie (Mimi Kennedy) goes to Christy’s and Bonnie’s place to help Jill. Christy has been trying to encourage Jill to follow her daily routine, but all Jill wants to do is stay in bed. When reminding Jill of all the good things in her life does not work, Marjorie forces Jill to volunteer at the soup kitchen with her. Christy agrees to go and drags Bonnie with her. Jill ends having a positive experience at the soup kitchen and surprises the other women when she tells them that she wants to have a baby.
At the diner, Bonnie blames Marjorie for Jill wanting to have a baby. Christy believes that Jill does not have what it takes to be a mom. Marjorie thinks that this is a phase that Jill is going through and she will change her mind soon. The next day, Jill has a three different piles of potential sperm donors and she is at Christy’s and Bonnie’s place. In the kitchen, the women talk about how they will get Jill to change her mind. Everything Christy says to Jill does not deter her from wanting to have a baby. When Jill says that she will need a partner to give her hormone shots and take her to doctor appointments, she wants Christy to do it because she feels that Christy is her best friend. Touched by her words, Christy momentarily forgets about her doubts and agrees.
When the two women are waiting for the doctor, Jill is browsing baby stuff in a magazine and Christy tells her to slow down with the shopping. When the topic of breastfeeding comes up, Jill is adamant that she will not do it. Christy says it is the best thing for a baby but Jill believes it will ruin her “hot mom” status. When Jill is called, Christy finds her voice and tells Jill not to do it. Christy tries to tell Jill about the harsh realities of motherhood and tells her friend point blank that a baby will not undo the pain Jill feels from her mom’s suicide. Jill fires back that Christy should not project her failures as a mother on her. Jill tells Christy never to talk to her again.
Later, Christy is worried about her friendship with Jill and Marjorie tells her that when Jill calms down that she will see where Christy is coming from but Christy is not sure.
