Mom – Fake Bacon and a Plan to Kill All of Us
By: Gladys Luna
Jill (Jaime Pressly) is sharing her story at the AA meeting and expressing that just in the same way they celebrate their sobriety, they should give her a 3-month chip for having been able to keep herself in a relationship for that long. It seems like she’s trying to find something bad about her relationship or her boyfriend, but nothing seems to come to mind. Bonnie (Allison Janney) agree with the Jill’s suggestion and shows some sort of desperation for wanting to share her story of the day. Despite her eagerness, Wendy (Beth Hall) grants Mary (Mary Pat Gleason) the chance to speak instead. The woman shares a story about her daughter and how she has tried to get her into the AA meetings with no success, how her grandson has gone back to jail for stealing again and she also takes the time to express her gratitude about how the program has changed her life. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the money to bail him out and even though some other time she would been really worried about it, now she is not since she believes that God has an eye on her. When she wraps her story Bonnie is still wanting to share her experience, but Wendy decides to end the session making her feel uncomfortable. So, she tells Mary that she is completely okay with the fact that she has hogged all the time. As the women start to gather the chairs and clean the space, she randomly reaches to each one of them as she says that she doesn’t like to be blamed for something she didn’t do. Wendy also shares something that happened to her at the supermarket. She reaches out to Mary again, who seems to have fallen asleep in her chair, and asks her to wake up to hear her story. The woman starts to lean in and they realize that something is just not right with her.
Later the gang gathers at the bistro discussing about Mary’s unfortunate passing. Wendy blames herself for not being able to take care of her even though she is a nurse, but the girls try to comfort her. A loud slurp coming from Tammy (Kristen Johnston) breaks the conversation as the woman apologizes saying that this is her first “sober person death” and she does not know how to act around it. Jill says that she feels very sad even though she didn’t know her and now, she won’t have the chance to do it either.
Bonnie feels guilty that her last interaction with Mary was her being mean to her. She tries to find some comfort, but no one seems to have anything to say about it. They get sad when they recall the positive story that Mary shared before passing and how she believed that God had a plan for her.
That night Bonnie walks into the kitchen and is surprised to see Christy (Anna Faris) in there as well taking notes and looking worried. Christy tells her that she couldn’t sleep and started to wonder what God plan for her should be. She thinks that maybe she can take Mary’s grandson case and get him out of jail. Bonnie cannot believe that Christy wants to help the man that robbed them once and sarcastically suggests that next time she could take a Nazi to Disneyland as well. Christy asks her to go to bed, but Bonnie tells her that she has been just lying there beating herself over the fact that she couldn’t apologize to Mary. So, Christy tells her that maybe she can try and speak to the woman instead or to do something called “living amends,” but her mother does not seem to agree with it.
The next day Christy arrives at her work and hears Veronica (Paget Brewster) yelling her name. She runs towards her office carrying her green smoothie and is surprised to see her lying on the floor. She asks her to feed her with the beverage but without looking directly at her since it makes her vulnerable. Then, she asks her to lift her up. Christy goes behind her back and holds her, but the woman seems to find a comfortable position right there. She explains that the night before she and her date where under the influence of a particularly zippy strain of sativa and decided to tape folders under their feet and use them as skies and she tweaked her back. Next, they had sex and she destroyed her back. Christy takes the opportunity to ask her for a recommendation of a pro bono lawyer that might help her with her friend grandson’s case and Veronica tells her that she can do it. She explains that all the lawyers at the firm are required to take a pro bono case and this might be Christy’s chance to do hers.
At the AA meeting the girls decide to leave Mary’s chair empty as a way to honor her. Jill tells them that the woman’s family wasn’t planning to have a memorial for her so she will do it. Later that day Christy meets with Mary’s grandson Todd (Andrew Caldwell) and tries to tell him about her plans of helping him, but the man just keeps throwing nasty comments towards her and only seems interested about who is going to keep his grandma’s stuff.
Christy meets with Veronica who is now on a treadmill placed in the middle of her office. When the blonde asks her if she is feeling better, the woman says that maybe she does or is just that she is very high on pain killers at the moment. Christy tells her that she cannot continue with Todd’s case since she believes he does not deserve to be defended knowing that he is guilty for everything he has been accused of. Veronica asks her to step for her on the treadmill and Christy does. Then, she tells her that it is very well known by lawyers that everyone deserves a competent defense and if she doesn’t believe that then maybe she should not be a lawyer after all. Christy gets tired and wants to climb down off the treadmill, but Veronica yells that she is not allowed to climb down of it.
Later at the bistro most of the ladies are gathered there except for Wendy and Christy. Tammy is worried about Marjorie’s (Mimi Kennedy) choice of food, but the woman tells her that her meal is completely healthy so she has nothing to worry about. Christy joins the girls and tells them that she managed to get Todd out of jail, but she does not feel happy about it. She believes that God’s plan for her is to be a terrible person who sets other terrible people free. /on the other side of things, Jill seems to have found her new career as a memorial planner and tells the girls that she thinks everyone deserves to have a big party even when they are dead.
At Mary’s memorial the girls are disgustingly looking at Todd who is very busy eating all the marshmallows by the chocolate fountain. Christy congratulates Jill on putting together a very lovely memorial. Jill is worried though that since she didn’t know Mary that well she had to arrange everything based on all of the things she likes and feels like she’s attending her own memorial. Christy tells her that lucky for her that it is not her picture that is on display.
Bonnie realizes that Wendy has not shown up at the memorial and that they haven’t seen her all week. So, she decides to call her. Tammy notices that Marjorie seems to have fallen asleep in her chair and runs towards her afraid that she might be dead. Marjorie tells her that she was just praying and tries to ease Tammy’s recent concerns about death.
Bonnie pays a visit to Wendy and when the woman opens the door she tells her that is not her fault that Mary has died even though she is a nurse. She tries to make her go with her to the memorial, but before Wendy makes sure to let her know about her thoughts and how unappreciated she feels sometimes. Bonnie tells her that even though she doesn’t know a lot of things about her, she is her friend and she loves her. Bonnie returns to the funeral along with Wendy. A woman named Angela (Lauren Weedman) approaches to Christy and introduces herself as Mary’s daughter. She confesses that her mother talked a lot about them and even tried to get her to rehab but she never listened to her and now she believes that maybe she can take the chance again. Christy suggests that if she wants to she can take her to their AA meetings and the woman agrees. Minutes later Tammy enters the place running and let the girls know that Todd is stealing Jill’s truck, making all the ladies run outside to stop him.
