Mr. Doo – We Goin Rise
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe my sound as a combination of old skool and new school (notice the spelling difference).
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Common, MosDef, Nas, Biggie, 2 Pac, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah and Rah Diggah just to name a few.
Q) Talk about the story behind Chief Reckah’s new song “We Goin Rise.”
A) This came about due to feelings that came up from within when I was sitting back and watching how COVID had affected us. People don’t want to mingle, be near each other, and we almost forgot how to be human. So, I wanted to come up with something to represent me being a soldier for the people who were too afraid to do or say anything themselves.
Q) How did you come to be a featured artist on the track?
A) I was always a fan being from Toronto and us having so much musical influence from New York, and me being a fan of hip hop and hip hop culture, figured I would reach out to someone who I knew was a boom bap menace and someone who I have been following my whole career. I was nervous but I just got out of my own head and went for it!
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think fans/supporters connect with the beat of the bat as it’s a vibe in itself, but then they listen to what is being said and I feel they relate, or they would not be listening to it.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video was directed by Chief Reckah. A few shots were taken by my son who is taking Video Production/ Motion Media at George Brown College. This was his first professional shoot, which I pray will open more doors for him! The video was also edited by Chief and I love that he incorporated clips from the Million Man March and a couple other eventful occasions which the people also can relate to once they see the visuals.
Q) When it comes to your music, what is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My song writing process varies, but I don’t need music before lyrics as I started out as lead singer in my church’s choir. Then, I became a freestyler, then battle rapper and then independent artist.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I usually have the majority of hand in my production, unless the beat or melody was composed by another producer/artist.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yeeessss, I’m currently working on an EP with Chief Reckah. And I would like to have a full album completed this year, God willing!
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Lee’s Palace, as I was able to open there for Choclair once when I was with Tha Mongrelz! This year I will be heading to Amsterdam to perform at the New Skool Rules Festival in May 2023. I have a feeling that it will be one of my other favorite places to perform! And I always love performing at home in the 6ix!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would have to say Lil Wayne as he’s always been one of my fav artists and he’s known to spark amazing careers.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) BBNO$ – I dig this artist as he’s super unique and doesn’t care what people say or think similar to me
PopCaan – As I’m part Jamaican and always have to hear my roots music
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I feel it is important due to being able to put out creator content and then get feedback and see what the fans/supporters are rocking with and if they want to hear more of it or not. This helps to keep you relevant with your audience.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thanks for the continued love and support of me and my music and I would not be here without God first, or any of you!!!!! Love y’all.
