Mykee Selkin – Scentsational Christmas
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the premise for the film Scentsational Christmas.
MYKEE: Sure. Ellie (Nazneen Contractor) goes home for Christmas to help her dad with their struggling candle-making business. Little does she know that her father has already found a charming magazine writer named Logan to help. Sparks fly as the two learn to work together.
Q) How was your character Logan Osborne originally described to you?
MYKEE: As a rugged, bachelor-for-life, kind of guy. He’s a travel writer always looking for the next adventure.
Q) What was it about Logan or about the theme of the film that made you want to be a part of the movie?
MYKEE: Logan loves to travel and is free-spirited. I have similar qualities, so I was immediately excited. He’s also charming and playful, so it was nice departure from my everyday self.
Q) Were you familiar with any of your co-stars before working on the film?
MYKEE: I was familiar with Nazneen from “Heroes Reborn” and “Covert Affairs.” So, if you’ve seen “Kim’s Convenience,” then you know the funny Sugith Varughese. The rest of the cast that I met were so lovely to work with.
Q) Often times holiday movies are shot during the opposite season. What was it like for you to be dressed for Christmas in the Summer?
MYKEE: Actually, we shot this in December in Canada (Hamilton, Ontario) …It was COLD. It was beautiful though. it really helped make the scenes feel real and play into the festiveness of the season. We had a lot of indoor scenes and heat warmers when we did have to shoot outside. Also, hot cocoa was readily available.
Q) What were some of your favorite or most challenging scenes to film?
MYKEE: One of my favorite parts of the shoot was making candles! I’ve never done anything like that, so it was cool to pour the hot wax in the tube and let it set with the wick. I took real pride in the craftmanship. The most difficult part was shooting a scene in a snowstorm. I had to walk across a field and find Nazneen. It was hard to see and cold. It was challenging BUT the final cut, with the snowflakes in the lens, looked so cool.
Q) What do you think it is about Scentsational Christmas that will make it a fast fan favorite holiday film?
MYKEE: I think around the holidays people really just want to watch something that gives them comfort and makes them feel good. The heart of the story, two people finding love in a place they least expected it, will resonate with fans and make it their favorite.
Q) This was your second holiday film this year, actually, as we recently saw you in Designing Christmas. Since you are a part of social media, what kind of feedback did you receive from viewers?
MYKEE: It was fun to read the fans comments. They loved my character and thought he was warm and genuine BUT didn’t like his “red flags” around marriage. There are so many Hilary Farr and Jessica Szohr (“Gossip Girl”) fans, so viewers responded well to their characters and loved the incorporation real interior design makeovers in the movie.
Q) I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask what were some of your personal holiday favorite films to watch?
MYKEE: Oh man, there are so many, but I would say Home Alone – classic. Love Actually is a good one, too.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the work you do?
MYKEE: THANK YOU!!! Every time you watch or comment on something I’m in, it just warms my heart – Truly.
