Natalie Hall – Fit For a Prince
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the premise for the film Fit For a Prince.
A) Cindy is an aspiring fashion designer whose talents have been the creative force behind a high-profile designer but longs to strike out on her own. Hired to dress the ladies of a wealthy family hosting an upcoming charity ball, Cindy’s life takes an unexpected turn when Prince Ronan (Jonathan Keltz), in town to attend the gala, becomes smitten with her and also takes note of her talent for design.
Q) How was your character Cindy originally described to you?
A) There wasn’t much of a description to Cindy, which I sometimes appreciate as an actor. It gives you the authority to create your own interpretation of her with no set rules. I always like bringing my own spin and fun to every character I play, especially in the world of Hallmark. People want to feel good when they watch these sweet films, so I always lean on the side of positive and upbeat with these roles. I like keeping the script/tone quick and moving forward. I obviously after I read the script knew it was a fun twist on the Cinderella story.
Q) Was there anything you added to the character that wasn’t in her initial breakdown?
A) These movies move so quickly. Most people don’t realize we film these in twelve to fourteen days. This one was super quick, which meant we only got a few takes on our closeups and scenes. So, you have to be totally prepared. No time to work something out or talk things through on set so you have to come in with a plan but at the same time really be open as an actor, listen and just see how it all plays out. A lot of the time since we are moving so quickly, I just try to stay open as possible and in that I discover so much about the character. But I obviously do a lot of prepping for the character. For example, Cindy has a love for fashion and design, so I spent a ton of time diving into the world of fashion and design.
Q) Cindy is a fabulous fashion designer. Did you have any discussions with the costume designer to help you understand catering to the fashion forward?
A) When I got together with the wardrobe designer, we really talked a lot about Cindy’s personal style – her everyday look. We wanted her to feel approachable, but still very put together. We talk a lot about pretty pastels and colors in scenes to help set the tone and mood. I did ask them some pointers on sewing and using a sewing machine. I also watched a million documentaries on fashion design. Like acting it’s a really hard, competitive business.
Q) Were you looking forward to sharing a scene with someone in particular?
A) I love being on set with all actors. Watching each actor work is such a thrill for me. Each person brings their own fun energy. I obviously look the most forward to working with Jonathan. He’s a royal pro since he has played a royal in so many things (“Reign,” Once Upon a Prince on Hallmark Channel). He was a delight.
Q) In such a fashion-centered film, what were some of your outfits to wear?
A) Just lots of color and pretty florals. This is a Springtime movie, so we wanted that to come across. Lots of pretty dresses. I love fashion in my personal life, but my style is definitely more laid back then Cindy’s!
Q) The gala is a standout moment. What other scenes were memorable for you?
A) The Gala is always so exciting to play. But it’s most of the time the most stressful day for everyone because all the people/scenes/dances etc. — lots of rushing around for cast/crew to get the day done. I loved the “Meet Cute” scene where Cindy first meets the Prince. She is in her shop totally in her element, almost like a dance with her drawings and fabric, and then Prince Ronan walks in. When two characters meet for the first time, I always enjoy those scenes.
Q) You are part of social media. Are you excited for the instant fan feedback you’ll receive to the movie?
A) I am always so grateful when I have the pleasure to work for Hallmark. The fans are truly the best. They also have the kindest people working behind the scenes at Hallmark. It becomes like a family whenever you work for their productions. I just love connecting with everyone and hearing their feedback. I hope they enjoy this one!
Q) What do you think it is about Fit For a Prince that will make it a fast Hallmark favorite of fans?
A) I played a princess for Hallmark a few years ago. I worked for Hallmark back in 2011, but then was working on some other series and movies but knew I wanted to return one day. I was so happy to come back years later getting to play a princess myself. In Fit for a Prince there is that royal fairytale world which I know a lot of people love. I felt the positive feedback from the fans when I was a princess on Hallmark which is so nice. People just love that royal twist.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the work you do?
A) Thank you always for your positive words and support. It really does mean a lot to us as actors when you enjoy a film. We put our hearts and souls into our work to bring a bit of happiness to family and people’s lives on a Saturday evening, so your support doesn’t go unnoticed. My husband was a Marine officer back in 2004-2008, so I am around a lot of military families due to my mother-in-law’s work with the veterans and their families. You can see the joy in their eyes when they talk about Hallmark and their movies. I love more than anything bringing some levity to people’s lives, especially right now. I hope you all enjoy Fit for a Prince.
