Interviews
Nella Cole – All Out
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) Right now, I’m gearing up to release the music video for my single, “All Out” on the brand new NellaColeVEVO channel! I’ll also be releasing a second single off my EP in 2019 and appearing in the new film Vox Lux starring Natalie Portman in theaters this month!
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe my sound as rhythmic pop. The vocals are feminine with really powerful moments and the beats will definitely make you want to move. I like to say my sound is salty and sweet!
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I grew up listening to a lot of rock and hip-hop. As I got older, I started listening to more musical theater and movie soundtracks. I love Hans Zimmer! I also love Lana Del Rey because she has elements of that orchestral cinematic sound. Of course, I’m a huge pop music fan. I’m really influenced by anything that I find beautiful, interesting or fun!
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “All Out.”
A) When I was recording in LA and working on the songs for my EP, I told the producers I wanted to write a party anthem that felt like New York City. I have so many memories and adventures in NYC which has been a huge inspiration to me. I think there’s a certain work hard, play hard culture of talented up and comers here in Manhattan and I wanted the song to capture that. “When we go out, we go all out.” Whatever it is, we do it big!
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) It’s a bop! [laughs] I think fans are really enjoying it because it gets people excited. Everyone can relate to that feeling of just totally letting loose for a night and living in the moment. It’s also really fun to dance to!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) To be honest, it’s always completely different. Sometimes ideas come to me while I’m driving or walking through the city. Other times people send me tracks or I collaborate with a musician. It’s always a unique process and for me there’s no set formula so it’s usually pretty organic.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Again, it can vary from song to song, but writing and storytelling is really important to me. If you’re working with other writers, it’s about collaborating and making the song the best it can be. I’m not a producer, but sometimes I write chord progressions or accompaniment ideas on my keyboard and then bring it to a producer who can take it to the next level!
Q) What can fans expect from a live Nella Cole performance?
A) Fans can expect a fun, colorful, explosive performance with lots of dancing and lots of energy! Sweat, glitter, maybe tears but overall a show that makes you feel alive! I like mixing live instrumentation with my electronic tracks, so you get the best of both worlds. The newest element we are working on adding in is a light show that syncs with the beats of the music!
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) The EP is coming 2019, but you can expect a second single before that. I’m also writing and recording new music so there is a lot in store for the upcoming year!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) It’s my dream to work with Max Martin! I would also love to work with Post Malone on a song and Ariana Grande on some fierce female collaboration!
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) My musical selections are SO all over the place. [laughs] I’ve been listening to “Midnight” by Jessie Ware on REPEAT and “Blessed” by Daniel Caesar. I’ve also randomly been throwing it back to like, 2002 with the Kylie Minogue album Fever. You can learn a lot about how I’m feeling in the moment by what I’m listening to. I usually post songs on my Insta Story so check it out if you want a peek inside my head. [laughs]
Q) You recently made your off-Broadway debut in “This Ain’t No Disco.” What was opening night like for you?
A) Opening night was electric! It was a whole mess of crazy, exciting, buzzing, nervous energy. It was closed to the public, so the audience was filled with our family, agents, producers and people involved with the show. It was truly nothing but love. We were so proud of our show and had been working SO hard, so it was a thrill to finally open!
Q) What did you take away from your time working on the production?
A) So much. I learned from each and every artists in that production. The writers and director gave us the gift of exploration during this show. We were all encouraged to build and create our characters and paint them how we felt compelled to. In this business it’s easy to get caught up on the grind and hustle side of things, but “Disco” was a beautiful reminder to always be an “artist.”
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media is just an amazing way to connect instantly with people from all over the world. You can reach people you may have never had the chance to reach and have your music heard by them. Even with a language barrier social media makes it easy to communicate and show love!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would like to say thank you so much for the love and support and this is only the beginning so get ready!
