Nine Perfect Strangers – Symphonic Dysfunction

Tina (King Princess) is peeking out from behind the curtains. She sees Brian (Murray Bartlett) and Jesse in the crowd. Martin (Lucas Englander) peeks his head around the corner with a headset on and tells her it’s about time for her to go on. She then notices Agnes (Dolly De Leon) in the crowd as well. As the lights continue to come on, she sees Wolfie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and asks her what is going on. Wolfie just smiles and points at the piano. Tina goes to the piano as Wolfie starts to play violin. When Tina starts to play, she messes up the song and everyone begins to laugh. Once she starts playing correctly again, the key lid starts to smash her fingers and starts to scream. Blood spews onto her face and dress. She starts to feel like she’s being suffocated and wakes up from her dream to Wolfie putting a cold compress on her face. She tells her she was trying to cool her down because she was screaming and moaning. She says she was having an on the nose nightmare and it was scary. She tells Tina that when she goes to sleep and when she wakes up Wolfie is always there in an exhausted tone. They hear a noise and Tina goes to look out the window. She gets mad and storms off to go outside for a closer look. Martin is assisting some movers who are bringing in musical instruments. Tina is upset and storms off and doesn’t stop to listen to Wolfies pleading that she didn’t know and maybe something else is going on. She slams the door leaving Wolfie on the other side.

David Sharpe (Mark Strong) is roaming the hallways looking deep into the pictures. Masha (Nicole Kidman) is watching him through the cameras. She greets him at the steps and tells him she’s glad he could be at breakfast on time. He makes a comment about the decor, then mentions how the owner of the place is completely broke. His company did a check on the place and they found that the place is owned by a family trust and the high interest loans have been taken out after the place was already going under. He says the invitation came after so many years and it feels like a set up. Masha says she brought him there to be healed, but he says he doesn’t need to be healed.

Martin is watching Masha’s last interview when she enters the room. He jumps up, startled and tells Masha he hasn’t done drugs and won’t do them. She asks about the day before and Martin tells her he tried to wait. She then says that everyone arrived back safely. Martin says it was a set up, but she ignores him. He then asks about a prototype and Masha says that she already tested it on someone and he shouldn’t worry about it.

Back downstairs in the house the people are still setting up the instruments inside the house and Tina watches them. She then has a flashback of when she first spoke to Wolfie. Wolfie is downstairs talking to Brian and Agnes about how strangely Tina has been acting. Brian starts to give her some help by trying to see it from all points of view. Agnes says she was married to God and Brian says he doesn’t have good relationship advice because he hasn’t been in one. David comes in to greet everyone and says that he recognizes Agnes but not Brian. Brian lets Wolfie know who he is and lets her know that he was a part of the station that relentlessly played his clips on his network.

On the other side of the room, Peter (Henry Golding) and Imogen (Annie Murphy)  have a chat with David. They discuss Imogen’s many degrees and what exactly that means. David asks about what everyone is drinking but no one responds. Victoria (Christine Baranski) and Matteo (Aras Aydin) arrive for breakfast after doing some “morning gymnastics”. Peter tells David is there for the same reason as them. David sniffs the drink and makes a disgusted face and sound. Victoria asks if anyone wants hers and Imogen leaves the room after saying that the drugs are a part of the experience. Helena (Lena Olin) comes into the room while Masha is reviewing the footage of David. She says Masha is obsessing over it. She tells her she is no longer her patient. Helena starts to talk about how she spent years trying to get away from everything and moving on from the past. But Masha says the only person that gets to move on is him and it won’t be a punishment for him, but a reckoning.

Imogen expresses her grievances about her mother still making her feel like she’s twelve and that is why she keeps getting upset. Peter tries to encourage her to spend more time with her mother. The real reason they are there is to spend time with their parents and if they’re spending all of their time together, they’re not able to do that. So, Peter lets her know that he wants to spend all of her energy on her father. Imogen gets upset and starts harshly talking to him before she yells asking him where she will sleep.

Wolfie is taking a walk in the snow and thinking of some fonder memories of her and Tina. She remembers when she told Tina about her losing her scholarship and how she was inspired to pursue something else. The two share a kiss that night. In the present, Wolfie sheds some tears.

Agnes and Brian are on the roof when Agnes points out that the clouds are drawing pictures in the sky. They start discussing if they believe they are making progress or not. Neither of them really knows if they are. Agnes says she isn’t in jail today. Brian says recognizing David Sharpe made him pissed. But Agnes just reminds him to be patient. Martin tells them it’s almost time to meet in the ballroom for their evening exercise. He thanks Agnes and says he feels small but today is a new day, so it will be okay. Agnes says she’s going to take a nap because she’s never slept on a mattress before and has been enjoying the beds since she started sleeping in them. Jesse taunts Brian and tells him maybe he is just hopeless. They hug and Jesse tells Brian he will never leave him. Then comments on how intense the drugs are.

Wolfie enters the ballroom world wind as the screen spins around her. She plays the harp and tells Tina she’s so glass she came. Peter and David start to discuss whether they feel the medications kicking in or not. David is experiencing it for the first time. Peter hopes that Masha is present because he isn’t too fond of Martin directing the sessions. Victoria and Imogen join them while Imogen is reaching out for something. She steps over Matteo and Brian and sits next to Agnes. Agnes starts to rub on her arm and moves to rubbing her face against it. When Brian tries to tell her to stop, she starts to rub his chin. Masha enters the room and welcomes everyone. She talks about how renowned musicians and conductors came there to renew themselves. So, they will perform for themselves. The dose they took that day was made to lower their inhibitions so that they will all be able to play without judgment. Masha says it’s okay that Martin made a mistake yesterday. Wolfie pulls Tina towards the piano and tells her to just play. Peter tells David about how Tina is a child prodigy. Wolfie starts to play but Tina slams her hands on the piano and storms off. Wolfie tries to run after her but is stopped by Martin as Masha watches from afar. Martin tells everyone that it is okay and they should take a break by listening to some music to loosen up. He turns on some music and everyone starts to dance around in their medicated bliss.

Meanwhile, Tina is having a breakdown outside. Imogen starts to hear a ringing in her ear. Masha goes to talk to Tina outside. She says she’s been to many specialists and even shamans, but she doesn’t care. She continues to talk about how all of it is all for Wolfie. Wolfie cares so much and is constantly bombarding her with her affections, but she doesn’t feel like it is for anybody but herself and not Tina. Tina doesn’t feel like Wolfie is acting like a girlfriend. She feels like she’s acting as a caretaker or manager. She feels like Wolfie is acting like her mom. Inside the ballroom, Imogen is asking her mother why she keeps avoiding having alone time with her. Victoria tries to persuade her that she isn’t but Imogen isn’t so easily persuaded. Victoria decides that they can have a girl’s night in her room and she will kick Matteo out. Imogen, still on her meds, undecidedly walks off without agreeing with her mother to spend the night with her. Agnes is yelling over the music for Wolfie to tell her how she really feels. Wolfie says she is but then Agnes reminds her that she is always worried about Tina, but maybe she should worry about how she feels. Wolfie takes a moment for herself, then goes outside to talk to Wolfie. Masha leaves them outside to talk.

Tina tells Wolfie that it is especially her fault that she isn’t able to play anymore. She says Wolfie is unbearable and that she is obsessed with getting her back to how she was before but Wolfie won’t listen to her. She said she never wanted to play but she was good at it and she had no other choice. Tina is scared no one will love her without her music, so she asks Wolfie if she will still love her if she doesn’t play anymore. Wolfie is confused and says that she loved the girl that made the magic and music. She thought that is what gave their relationship meaning. Wolfie says she loved the musician and not the girl who doesn’t do anything all day.

Imogen walks alone when she runs into Matteo wrapped in a blanket. He tells her that Victoria is in the room waiting for her so he is finding a place to stay for the night. Imogen goes to see Victoria, but finds her passed out drunk on the sofa. She takes a bottle of wine and leaves. Tina walks back into the empty ballroom drinking a bottle of her own. Imogen and Tina lay on some blankets discussing their stresses. Tina asks why Imogen hates her mom, but Imogen says she adores her mother. But, she thinks Victoria has never adored her. Tina tells her it’s cool that she is working on herself.

David tells Peter he has some work he has to finish as they walk back to the building. Peter gets visibly disappointed because he wants to spend more time with his father.

Masha sees her daughter in the window as she watches David retreat to his room. Masha tells her daughter that tonight is the night she is going to meet her father.
