Oh Honey – With Love
Q) Your song “Be Okay” was recently featured on “Glee.” What did you think of Lea Michele and Naya Rivera’s performances?
Mitchy: That was definitely a surreal moment for us. I remember when we got the email that they were going to be doing the song and it was definitely a moment of excitement and “Oh my God! Is this really happening?!”
Danielle: It was definitely surreal. I grew up doing theater and finding that out was just so crazy for me. We watched the show and both of them are amazing vocal performers. I think they did an awesome job with the song. It was just so cool watching that on TV.
Q) The songs on your EP have quickly become fast fan favorites. What do you think it is that has captured so many listeners?
Mitchy: That’s a good question. I’d like to think that we have a lot of optimistic views and a positive outlook on a lot of things in our music and our kind of outlook on life is optimistic. I like to think that our listeners walk away with that and with the sense that it’s going to get better. Things are going to be okay.
Danielle: I think there are a lot of sad songs in the world and that people kind of gravitate towards a positive message. That’s what we try to leave people with.
Q) How much hand in the production did you have with your EP With Love?
Mitchy: I had a huge hand. We are definitely hands on. We did the whole record with my production partner Christian Medice. He’s our writing partner as well and a handful of other collaborators. Our bass player did a couple songs. We did two songs on the EP with Christian that were “Be Okay” and “Lonely Neighbor” and then we did the other two songs with our live bass player. He did “Get it Right” and “I Love You Will Still Sound The Same.” It’s just a big family affair. We’re very hands on and I have a vision and we get people around us to help us execute it and make Danielle and I’s crazy ideas come to life.
Q) When can fans expect a full length album from Oh Honey?
Danielle: We’re not sure. Right now, we’re just touring, touring, touring through the summer. Right now we’re out with James Blunt and this summer we’ll be out with The Fray. Hopefully, we’ll be back in the studio in August. We’re always writing. So, we’ll see.
Q) Your sound has been described as “bright folk” and “uplifting pop.” How is your music influenced by these infusions?
Mitchy: It all starts with a positive outlook and it starts with a guitar. We try to keep the music along the same lines with lyrical content, just very upbeat and very optimistic. We try to tie in that positive message.
Danielle: We’re also from Brooklyn and I think that a lot of those sounds are coming out of Brooklyn right now. We’re definitely influenced by our environment and our friends making music around us.
Q) How have your views on life and relationships been a catalyst for your music?
Mitchy: That’s definitely number one when it comes to writing songs. It’s easier to put that stuff into a song than to talk about it in real life, most of the time.
Danielle: I think people appreciate it when you keep it real, too. That’s why people are able to relate to our songs because we write about real things that we go through.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Oh Honey performance?
Danielle: Fun!
Mitchy: A lot of energy!
Danielle: We have so much fun on stage! We love what we do. We love our fans. We try to keep the vibes good and, hopefully, people take that away.
Q) What’s the last thing you do before going on stage?
Mitchy: That’s top secret! We have a band ritual that we do before go on stage that is top secret. But it usually consists of a couple Jameson shots, a vodka drink and then we hit the stage.
Danielle: I pace around a lot and I drink a lot of water. I put on my chapstick. I have to make sure I put on enough chapstick right before I go on stage. That’s one thing I’m big on. If I don’t have it on, my lips start to hurt. Because I know I’ll be on stage for thirty or forty minutes, I have to put on enough that I’ll be good by the end of the set.
Q) How has social media been an asset to the group?
Mitchy: As far as staying in touch with fans this day and age, it’s number one. It’s definitely cool to have an outlet to talk to everybody and keep them up to date with us daily when we’re on the road with stuff we have going on.
Danielle: It’s great because we’ll play a show and we’ll have fans at the show who follow us and they’ll tweet saying, “Hey, we just saw you play and we loved the set!” That’s always really cool because we’re able to meet people right after we play.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your music?
Mitchy: Thank you!
Danielle: Yeah! Thank you!
Mitchy: Honestly, sometimes it sounds a bit like a cliché, but it’s true…Without the fans and without the people that consume the music and listen to us that we wouldn’t get to do what we do. So, it’s really all reliant on them. We’re definitely grateful and thankful that people listen to us.
Q) What can fans do to help spread the word about your music?
Danielle: Post about us!
Mitchy: Post about us online and share it with your friends.
Danielle: Sharing it with your friends is a great way for people to hear about our music. Social media is so effective. Just retweeting something about our EP could be an amazing help to us in helping to get the word out there.
