Once Human – Scar Weaver
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Destruction and beauty
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Opeth, Devin Townsend, Angela Gossow, Dimmu Borgir, gojira
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Cold Arrival.”
A) This song is dedicated to and about our friend who passed away in 2020.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) Well maybe that is a question for each individual fan!
Q) The video for this is tour footage from your Lustmore and Tourgasm tour. What was it about these memories that made them the perfect representative for the song?
A) We have a lot of great memories from this tour on and off the stage. We felt very fortunate to even be out at all during 2021, given the circumstances. It is great that we were able to film this and have for our personal memories! But the reason for the filming was we wanted to give the fans a video that we didn’t have in our catalog, which was a live performance video.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) For this album, Max [Karon] wrote all of the music and then sends it to me to write my lyrics and vocal melodies. Sometimes I will meet with him and have him change some parts musically if I feel it needs a different energy or if it needed more space for vocals. I do need the music first to write my vocal melodies, as they tend to weave through his soaring and dissonant guitar melodies. A lot of times for me, it feels like trying to solve an algebra equation. Finding a melody that works with his alien chords is quite a challenge.=
I do sometimes have ideas for lyrics that don’t require music, but a lot of times, the music will write the lyrics itself. I will just start singing something without thinking b cause the music inspired me to do so.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Logan [Mader] and Max teamed up on the production side of things. I gave my opinions but mostly I leave it to the pros.
Q) What are some themes that you explore on your upcoming album Scar Weaver?
As far as lyrical themes? It varies from a song about blood diamonds to dealing with my own destructive inner critic. From writing about the death of a friend, to media chaos. I just stayed in the moment for each song.
Q) What songs on the album challenged you the most creatively?
A) All of them. As I said earlier, Max‘s riffs were all like solving an algebra question to find a melody that fits. But I suppose the winner would be “Only In Death” which had that, plus the video. Logan and I filmed the video, and then gave it to Thomas Crane for the editing. Thomas really made it great! I also enjoyed doing the video and editing for our Strapping Young Lad cover.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from checking out Scar Weaver?
A) Not sure what to say here, I just hope you enjoy it.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I love Germany and Switzerland. I just enjoy the culture, the nature and the food! Of course, going to Australia will always be the most exciting because it is home to me.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Many people! I would love to collaborate with Devin Townsend, Mikael Akerfelt, Angela Gossow and Alissa White-Gluz.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to a lot of Gojira live lately. I love the am beefy they bring live, and it even cuts through on audio only. Maybe it helps release the lack of live shows lately as well.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s great to be directly connected to fans for many reasons. Patreon had been an amazing outlet for many artists including myself. I enjoy getting to know my biggest fans.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) We love you and appreciate you very much.
