Interviews
Payton Moormeier – Nevermind
By: Jessica Dyer
Q) How would you describe your music?
A) Emotional lyrics, with some bop to it. [laughs] You wanna get over an ex while bopping your head then you’re in the right place.
Q) What is your song writing process?
A) 99% of the time it starts over an instrumental. Other times I’ll write over me playing guitar or piano. I usually freestyle melodies until I got some. Then, I start digging in the brain for inspiration and the rest is magic.
Q) What was the inspiration behind your new single “Nevermind″ and where did the idea for the song first come to you?
A) It was inspired by a past relationship, feeling stuck and helpless in something I was too scared to let go of. I went to the studio and my guys had some fire playing on the speakers and wanted to play me this hook they had just came up with for this song (“Nevermind”). I fell in love and connected to what they had written. So, we worked and wrote the rest of it that night.
Q) How did the process of writing “Nevermind” compare to other singles you’ve written in the past?
A) Very, very smooth. I feel like it was just such a topic I could pour my heart into. The vibes were right that night for sure. And the four Red Bull’s definitely helped a little for sure. But the song felt like it wrote itself almost.
Q) What kind of fan response have you gotten to your single?
A) I’ve gotten an insane amount of love on it. It’s always scary putting very private sides of my life onto display, but getting people who relate and having the song help them through a similar situation makes it all worth it to me.
Q) Is there a full album or EP in the works and if so, what can you tell us about it?
A) I’ve got a lot of music in the works always. As soon as inspiration kicks for the project I’ll let y’all know. [smiles]
Q) How has the lockdown impacted you creatively?
A) The only thing that really messes with me is the loss of interaction. You can only interact with the same people every day for a small amount of time before you drive each other crazy. I just miss building true connections and living out my life fully. But it’ll all be back in due time.
Q) You recently created a scholarship “Artist in You.” What can you tell us about it?
A) The “Artist in You” scholarship was a way for me to help other independent artist chase their passions and keep their dreams alive. Making music independently is very painful on your pockets and most of the time when you’re trying to be discovered there’s not much turn around for a while. I wanted to help at least one person get closer to living out there dreams.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) blackbear, Post Malone, Dominic Fike and John Mayer
Q) Who would you love to collaborate with on a future project?
A) Dominic Fike or blackbear 100%
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of your music?
A) Thank you all so much for supporting me around every corner. We’re just getting started. [smiles] 2021 is ours ❤️
