Pitch – Unstoppable Forces And Immovable Objects
By: Jessica Wolff
Mike Lawson (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) meets his agent and they discuss the fact that Lawson has cleared waivers. His agent tells him that he can be traded to a playoff contender if he asks for it, but Lawson insists that he wants to contend for playoffs with the Padres. A massive rainstorm hits San Diego and the game suffers a rain delay. Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury) is optimistic about the rain delay, but Blip Sanders (Mo McRae) and Lawson are irritated.
Evelyn Sanders (Meagan Holder) goes with the other family members of the team into the waiting room, and Amelia Slater (Ali Larter) complains to Eliot (Tim Jo) about being stuck with the “WAGS” (wives and girlfriends of sports stars). A woman, Natalie (Sarah Shahi), follows Oscar Arguella (Mark Consuelos) and asks if they can get together tonight, but he turns her down. Al Luongo (Dan Lauria) tells Lawson that he will be benched after the rain delay. His replacement, Livan Duarte (Christian Ochoa), talks to Ginny about hitters. As they walk away, Ginny sees Lawson get upset as his locker.
Charlie Graham (Kevin Connolly) talks to Oscar about the rain delay and the financial impacts. Oscar tells him that he has been told that there will be some time between storms that they can play in. Graham asks about the possible trade of Mike Lawson and Oscar defends against it. When Graham doesn’t budge, he says he will talk to him about it. As the rain delay goes on, the players get more and more restless. As Lawson walks out of the locker room, Oscar approaches him and asks to speak to him. Duarte tells Ginny that he’s jealous of her more attractive groupies and tells her about the girlfriend he left behind in Cuba. A Padres assistant comes over and tells Ginny that a man named Will wants to talk to her.
In a flashback, Will Baker (B.J. Britt) calls Ginny on the day of her first start. He can’t make it to the game, but he wishes her luck and promises that there will be other games for him to go to. In the present, Ginny embraces Will and they talk about the game. The assistant takes Will to the family lounge and Will tells her that he has a new phone number.
Oscar and Graham talk to the groundskeeper, Russell (Mark Christopher Lawrence), about speeding up the field prep after the rain delay ends. Russell gets angry with him and tells him that the field will be ready when it’s safe for the players. Will walks into the family lounge and Evelyn embraces him, but Amelia is less pleased. In a flashback, Will watches Ginny’s second start on television and his face has a noticeable bruise. Amelia goes to see him and comments on the bruise, which Will says was due to a debt he fell behind on. Amelia says that Ginny can’t see him like this, but Will argues that Ginny needs him. She writes him a check to pay his debts and tells him to leave.
Blip sees Lawson watching the Cubs game in the locker room and they talk about the Cubs’ chance to win the World Series and break their curse. Blip tells him that he should stop waiting around and talk to Oscar. Soon after, Lawson meets with Oscar and Luongo and Oscar asks him if he’s happy in San Diego. He says that he’s happy, but he could be happier. Oscar tells him that it would be best if he agreed to a trade, though Luongo wants him to stay on the team. Lawson tells them that he will think about it before storming out of the office.
Back in the locker room, Lawson pulls out a box with a gavel. Blip asks him if he really wants to do this and Lawson reminds him that he’s frustrated and might not be around for much longer. They get the attention of the rest of the locker room and Lawson sets up a mock courtroom. Ginny is confused and wants to discuss batters and Lawson tells her that it’s a clubhouse tradition called Kangaroo Court. Meanwhile, Amelia is annoyed by Will’s presence in the room while he tells Evelyn that he’s in town scouting locations for a sports bar. Amelia is skeptical about the business, but he is too confident to listen. Amelia asks about his previous business dealings and he says that he has taken care of it.
The Kangaroo Court continues and Lawson accuses Ginny of being thrown out at third base in a previous game. She argues that there was a hit and run signal and gets Omar Robles (Jason Canela) to back her up. Lawson gets angry and insists that his word is law as he’s been there longer than anyone before storming out. Ginny follows him and tries to apologize. Lawson yells at her, telling her that he’s sick of everything being about her.
Blip talks to Ginny about Lawson’s outburst, telling her that he wants to earn a ring. She says that he should play harder if he wants one and Blip says that it’s not always that simple. Natalie approaches Oscar again and kisses him. She asks him about Lawson and Oscar asks her to go out with him on a real date. She is worried about being found out, but Oscar is tired of hiding their affair.
Will and Evelyn talk about potential spots for the bar, while Eliot brings Amelia information on Will. She confronts him about his debts and how he wants Ginny to be an investor in his business. Will tells Amelia that she can’t be both Ginny’s agent and business manager. Hours before Ginny’s second start, Will attempts to sneak out of his hotel room. After seeing Ginny leave her room, he goes back into his room and takes the check Amelia left him. In the present, Ginny gets a text from Will asking for her help as she warms up. He tells her that it’s an emergency and she rushes to him.
As the rain starts to let up, Oscar tells Graham that Lawson will give his answer later that day. Graham wants to start the game up again and wants Oscar to find a groundskeeper who will listen to his demand. Oscar explains to him that no groundskeeper will lift the tarp until it stops raining completely. Ginny goes to see Will in the family lounge and asks him about the emergency. He tells her about the business and Ginny thinks that it’s a great idea. Despite Amelia’s objections, Ginny offers him anything he needs. Outside the lounge, Ginny tells Will not to put her on the spot. Will tells her that Amelia hasn’t forgiven him for what happened in June and Ginny has no idea what he’s talking about. He confesses that he was in town during her second start.
Blip and Lawson talk about the failed Kangaroo Court. Robles comes up to them and apologizes for backing Ginny up and admits that he defended Ginny because he has feelings for her. They take him into a private room and ask him about his crush. He confesses that he’s in love with her and Lawson asks him how much he knows about her. When he doesn’t know any of the facts Lawson lists, including that she hums off-key Katy Perry tunes when she works out, Lawson tells him that he’s not in love because he doesn’t truly know her.
Will tries to run after Ginny, but she has no interest in speaking to him. She storms around the clubhouse looking for Amelia. Once she finds her, she confronts her about what Will told her. Amelia confesses that everything he told her was true and that she lied to her to protect her. Ginny mentions that signing with her was Will’s ide, and Amelia tells her that it was for the best. Oscar brings Graham to the batting cage to keep him out of trouble with Russell.
Ginny comes back to the locker room to find the Kangaroo Court back in session. She and Robles try to change their testimony, but Lawson declares it a mistrial. Luongo comes in and tells them that the game will resume in twenty minutes. Natalie tells Oscar that she hoped that the game would be rained out so they could get together earlier. They run into Luongo and Natalie addresses him as Dad before leaving Oscar and Luongo in the clubhouse.
Amelia asks Will about his debts and tells him that she believes that Ginny is under too much pressure at the moment to go into business. Despite her objections, Will refuses to back down. Lawson comes up to Ginny while she is stretching and talks to her about batters. He watches the other players leave the locker room and tells Oscar that he wants to be traded to Chicago.
