Platonic – Fore!

Will (Seth Rogen) and Sylvia (Rose Byrne) are sitting in her minivan as Will stalls on having a crucial conversation with Jenna (Rachel Rosenbloom). Sylvia expresses impatience with his procrastination, noting she has a schedule to maintain. When Will asks what she’ll do if the wedding falls through since she has no other clients, they brainstorm alternative business ideas, including planning corporate retreats like the annual one Charlie’s law firm organizes. Realizing Will is still avoiding the inevitable, Sylvia kicks him out of the car to force the conversation.

Jenna is meeting her father Hank (Sam McMurray) for golf and assumes Will has come to join them. As Will attempts to pull her aside for a private discussion, Hank appears with Sylvia in tow, having discovered her waiting in the parking lot. The enthusiastic golfer invites everyone to play a round together, and despite Sylvia’s attempts to decline, both Hank and Jenna insist they participate.

On the golf course Hank convinces the inexperienced and unprepared Will to take a swing using Hank’s equipment. In a catastrophic turn of events, Will’s shot somehow hits the ball directly into Hank’s eye, causing a massive bloody injury that Hank immediately covers with his hand while crying in pain.

The foursome panics as Will fumbles to call emergency services. At the hospital Will and Sylvia remain in shock over the accident. Sylvia feels guilty about vomiting on the way over and continues to feel nauseous.

When Hank’s doctor emerges, Will pulls her aside to ask about the prognosis. Dr. Rapaport (Clare McNulty) reveals that the eye is completely destroyed, leaving Will struggling to process the devastating news. Jenna asks Will to speak with Hank, who wants to see him, while Sylvia tries to avoid throwing up again in the waiting room.

Will enters the room to find the entire Lewis family gathered together and apologizes profusely for the accident. Hank immediately forgives him, declaring they’re “all family now” and that he’s still gaining “a son” in Will. As Jenna smiles and the family brings Will in for a hug, he feels compelled to agree despite being visibly uncomfortable and desperately trying to hide his true feelings.

Returning to the waiting room, Will debriefs with Sylvia about feeling trapped in the relationship with Jenna out of guilt. Sylvia acknowledges that while today isn’t the right time for difficult conversations, his feelings haven’t changed.

Will goes to check on Jenna, and she asks him to hold her as they get comfortable together. He kisses her forehead, one thing leads to another, and they end up getting intimate in one of the spare hospital rooms. Will feels excited but nervous because the blinds are open.

Sylvia calls Charlie (Luke Macfarlane) to discuss the day’s events, and he provides his usual support. She then brings up Will’s suggestion about her running Charlie’s annual company retreat. Charlie becomes quiet and visibly uncomfortable, though he tells her it’s not a bad idea. He suggests she call his coworker Stewart (Guy Branum) to explore her options and they hang up awkwardly as Will and Jenna approach Sylvia with smiles.

The couple announces they’ve decided to move up the wedding to Friday of that week, meaning Sylvia must reschedule and rush to complete all preparations. She’s understandably surprised, especially since this conflicts with Charlie’s Jeopardy taping, but she manages an awkward smile.

After Jenna leaves to meet her mother, Sylvia asks Will about the sudden change. Will explains that he and Jenna finally had sex again, multiple times, for the first time in a while, making him feel much more comfortable about proceeding with marriage. Sylvia expresses incredulity, wondering if Will is simply caught up in the afterglow of a sexual encounter.

She reminds him that he came to her asking for help to escape the relationship, but Will counters that he’s now asking her to do the opposite. When she continues to object, Will shuts her down, demanding her “complete and total support” and repeating the phrase like a mantra until she reluctantly agrees.

The next day, Sylvia tells Katie (Carla Gallo) that she’s decided to just be supportive. Katie remains dubious, pointing out that Sylvia is helping plan a wedding for a doomed marriage. When Katie asks if Sylvia would have known about Katie’s eventual divorce, Sylvia shrugs, explaining that she tried warning Will once about his ex-wife and it didn’t work. Now she’s decided to let people figure out their own problems.

Meanwhile, Stewart visits Charlie’s office asking what he should tell Sylvia. Charlie admits that Sylvia’s business isn’t profitable and he doesn’t think she can handle an event of this size, plus he doesn’t want to mix business with personal matters. When Stewart asks if that means he should say no, Charlie thinks of reasons why refusing would be problematic, then hems and haws for a solid minute before deciding to flip a coin.

Sylvia arrives at Jenna’s house excitedly announcing she got the job. Will congratulates her and expresses excitement about getting married the next day. When Jenna joins them to go over final wedding details, they must decide on music, food, and officiant.

The couple has conflicting preferences on virtually everything, especially the officiant. Will insists on a rabbi while Jenna demands a priest. They ask Sylvia to have both on standby while they continue deliberating.

Jenna pulls Sylvia aside to look at dress options and asks if things are moving too fast. Despite knowing the truth, Sylvia puts on a brave face and says things will work out as they should.

That night Will and Jenna have a conversation in bed where he confesses wanting more intimacy. Jenna admits she’s simply not very sexual and has made peace with that fact. Will is devastated but hides his reaction well.

On the wedding day the Lewis family gathers as planned. Since Jenna and Will couldn’t choose between a DJ and live band, Sylvia hired both to “riff on each other.” Instead, the DJ and band hate each other. Sylvia meets with Will about the officiant choice since both the rabbi and priest are becoming upset and impatient.

Will tells her to table that discussion and comes clean about wanting to cancel the wedding. He can’t give up sex, especially not for Jenna, and resolves to tell her. They encounter Will’s friends and business partners Andy (Tre Hale), Reggie (Andrew Lopez), and Omar (Vinny Thomas), who excitedly mention how Jenna’s wealth means Will is set for life, causing Will to doubt his decision.

When Katie appears, Sylvia blurts out that Will was about to cancel the wedding a minute ago. The six of them begin weighing the pros and cons of dumping Jenna at the altar, getting married and staying married for money,or getting married and divorced also for money.

Sylvia becomes disgusted by the conversation’s tone, especially Will’s readiness to enter a marriage he’s not completely committed to. Hank appears to pull Sylvia away to speak with Jenna.

Sylvia meets the bride-to-be, whose wedding outfit is outlandish but very on-brand for the wealthy Lewis family: a white dress with a white decorative fascinator threaded to her hair with a pin. When Jenna asks if it’s too much, Sylvia offers superficial support while subtly indicating her real opinion doesn’t matter.

Jenna becomes solemn and asks Sylvia to be honest because she’s having second thoughts. Sylvia pauses, then blurts out that she shouldn’t marry Will since he’s “a mess right now” and she “deserves better.” Shocked, Jenna replies that she meant about the fascinator.

Will decides to proceed and waits nervously at the altar. Jenna runs up to him in a moment that begins in silent slow motion with Will mouthing “fuck” as he realizes what’s coming. Jenna demands the truth and Will comes clean about wanting to break up with her for over a week and having cold feet that morning.

Jenna tells him off and punches him in the face. Will and Sylvia hurriedly run to her minivan as Hank nearly hits Will with a golf ball, with Will remarking that the man still has his swing even with one eye. Sylvia and Will drive off with Sylvia apologizing profusely while Will quietly asks her to drive in silence.
