Interviews
Rachel Kylian – Lipstick
By: Karen Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the premise for the film Lipstick.
A) The film tells the story of a pro-bono Criminal Defense Attorney who teams up with detectives to unmask a serial killer hiding in plain sight.
Q) How was your character London originally described to you?
A) London was originally described as a strong woman and a leader. She is a veteran homicide detective and the first female Lieutenant on the force.
Q) Were you familiar with any of your costars before working with them on the film?
A) Yes. I had worked with Llewellyn Cornell Radford II on a project before Lipstick, so I was very happy when I saw his name on the call sheet.
Q) Prior to filming did you do much research into Antisocial Personality Disorder?
A) I did some research to understand the serial killer’s mental health condition. There are also many movies with sociopath characters (such as Girl Interrupted, Nightcrawler) that I have watched before working on this film, and the script was well written with many clues to understand the antisocial personality disorder.
Q) Talk about working with director Kimberly Connor.
A) Kimberly is a nice director. She has a lot of experience, and I was very blessed to be part of her project. It is not every day that I get to play a Lieutenant. We were filming multiple scenes in a day. I love working with women creatives. She wrote, produced and directed Lipstick. We shot this indie film in a very short time, and I really liked that she cast black actors to star in her films.
Q) Was there a scene that was particularly challenging for you to film?
A) Yes, there was a scene with fight choreography and blood that was a bit challenging. I would have loved a stunt double lol.
Q) With such an intense film subject matter and scenes, how did you shake off a long day of being on set?
A) I have worked on other intense films before (the drama Black November, the thriller Interpreters) so I was ready and excited for this new project. I did have some days off in between shoot days to rest. At the end of a shoot day, I like to throw away my sides and focus on the next day.
Q) What do you think it is about Lipstick that’s going to make it such a fascinating and intriguing thriller?
A) Lipstick is an action-packed suspense thriller with heat that keeps you on the edge of your seat, you don’t know what’s coming.
Q) What are the other projects that you have been busy working on?
A) I have been busy working on TV (“And Just Like That,” “Magnum P.I.”), and I just joined the cast of the new series “The Family Business New Orleans” (BET+).
I also worked on a comedy called Sunlight directed by Nina Conti. I played the role of Vashti. She is the boss who runs SUNLIGHT RADIO. The film is set to premiere at The Edinburgh International Film Festival 2024 on August 17 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the work you do?
A) Thank you all for your love and support.
