Riverdale – Chapter One Hundred and One: Unbelievable
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
After a strange phone call warns Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Archie (KJ Apa) of the bomb about to go off, Betty, Archie, and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) are now convened at the Cooper household with Alice (Mädchen Amick) and Uncle Frank (Ryan Robbins) in the aftermath. Trying to decipher the events that led to the destruction of the Andrews residence, Alice is adamant that all three go to the hospital to get checked out but only convinces Betty to go. Meanwhile, Uncle Frank does not buy Betty and Archie’s story of their escape and brings Archie back to the house for answers. Archie is unable to answer how they were able to escape with barely a scratch, but they hear their dog Bingo barking in the rubble, rescue him, and bring him to the vet for further observation. They learn that all of Bingo’s legs are broken.
Jughead heads over to see Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) and Pop Tate (Alvin Sanders) to inform them of the news, only to have Tabitha offer Jughead to stay with her. He agrees and goes to leave the diner, suddenly bothered by the bell on the door on the way out. Later at Tabitha’s residence Jughead goes to finish some writing, only to find that the explosion may have impacted his hearing more than he realized. When Tabitha comes home, he decides not to tell her just yet.
News of the explosion begins to travel fast as Kevin (Casey Cott) who is talking about his Broadway dreams is interrupted by a phone call from his father after hearing Fangs (Drew Ray Tanner) and Toni (Vanessa Morgan) drop the news that they are dating. Kevin then contacts Cheryl’s (Madelaine Petsch) house and Britta (Kyra Leroux) takes the message to Cheryl and Nana Rose (Barbara Wallace). Thinking that she may have unleashed Abigail’s curse on her friends, Cheryl is furious with Nana Rose and demands to know how to reverse what has been undone. Unfortunately for Cheryl, Nana Rose burned the way to reverse the spell and Cheryl takes to her family library to find another way.
For Betty, Archie, and Jughead, things start to go awry as they notice more than just their residence has changed since that explosion. On the way out of the hospital with Alice, Betty notices that a hospital orderly named Trevor (Paul Anthony) has a strange red glow around him. She later finds out one of the nurses at the hospital has been murdered. Betty later takes her hunch about Trevor to Agent Lin (Quinnie Vu) to investigate Trevor as a suspect. Later that night Glen (Greyston Holt) visits Betty at FBI headquarters, questioning her relationship with Archie and trying to assert his dominance. Before Glen begins to advance on her, Betty sees that red glow around Glen and immediately springs in action to defend herself, eventually punching Glen in the face.
Jughead continues to lose his hearing as he cannot hear his phone go off but manages to pick up the call and find that his article about Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) is being picked up a prominent newspaper. As his hearing continues to worsen to the point that he cannot hear a customer try to flag him down for a coffee, Tabitha acts and tells Jughead that he needs to get his hearing checked out immediately. Unfortunately for Jughead, he later finds out that due to the explosion he is going deaf. Taken back by the news, Tabitha embraces Jughead and assures him that they will get through this together.
During one of his workouts, Archie decides to go weigh himself and finds that he has gained almost 30 pounds overnight but shows no evidence of weight gain whatsoever. Later that day, Mary Andrews (Molly Ringwald) returns to Riverdale after hearing of the explosion and tearfully walks through what remains of the house. Believing that Fred (Luke Perry) was watching over Archie and protected him gives her solace, but still leaves Archie with so many questions. The next morning as Archie starts to clean up the debris in his house his shirt snags on a nail and rips, leaving him confused as to how he was not harmed.
When Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Reggie (Charles Melton) receives news of the explosion, Veronica immediately springs into action and goes to see Betty who is leading the FBI search for Hiram. Angered by Hiram’s decision to go after her friends, Veronica goes to Hermosa (Mishel Prada) for some assistance in outing Hiram’s whereabouts. While Reggie wants to talk more about their upcoming plans for their upcoming casino, Veronica turns to the crime underworld for assistance in locating her father. Reggie may believe that the worst is behind them, but Veronica knows that Hiram will not stop until he gets his way.
Veronica’s plans quickly become derailed after finding out that Reggie’s father suffered a heart attack and is in the hospital. Reggie laments that while he was in a better place with his father now, he wishes he had more time. The regret begins to seep in, and Veronica promises to bring Reggie an overnight bag to the hospital, heading home to call off the hit. Unfortunately for Veronica, when she calls the hitman Anatol (Andre Roshkov) that she hired he informs her that the job has been done and sends her proof of Hiram’s death. Veronica was too late. Reggie later returns from the hospital and shares that his father has recovered. Not wanting to share her wrongdoings, Veronica lies and tells Reggie that she called off the hit. Later, Hermosa calls Veronica to tell her she is a marked woman for putting the hit on Hiram.
Finding out that The Ghoulies were more than likely the responsible party for planting the bomb in Archie’s house and the arrival of new leader Twyla Twist (Alaina Huffman), Fangs and Toni meet with Twist only to find that Hiram is still funding the Ghoulies and they will not stop going after Archie until the job is done. Fangs and Toni approach Archie and tell him of Hiram’s plan, thinking that they have convinced him to flee town. But with Archie’s potential new superpower he decides to casually push Fangs and Toni for the Ghoulies whereabouts and confront them alone. He manages to take many of them down but has now caused an all-out war between the Serpents and Ghoulies, news that Toni learns over the phone from Twist herself. Kevin decides to stay in Riverdale as the real war starts to watch Baby Anthony (Ace Rudy Allan Carter) while Toni and Fangs lead the Serpents.
Cheryl’s attempts to reverse the curse seem to be thwarted repeatedly, believing that Nana Rose is responsible for ruining her redemption. Later, Britta is seen sabotaging Cheryl’s curse reversal but later learns that Britta is being possessed by Abigail. Seeking Nana Rose’s advice on the situation, Cheryl learns that Abigail may have been summoned and entered Britta’s body. To rid them of Abigail, they must perform a banishment. While Britta is finally free of Abigail’s spirit, Nana Rose has instead transferred her soul into Cheryl’s body, unbeknownst to Cheryl.
Archie returns to the gym from the one-sided Ghoulie fight covered in blood…not his. A concerned Betty questions what happened and when Archie explains his new abilities, she uses his brawn to help take down Trevor at the hospital. Later at the Whyte Wyrm, Betty and Archie discuss their newfound powers and what this means for them. But then Betty mentions her encounter with Glen and Archie looks ready to fight yet again. Later when Betty and Archie are alone, they agree to take on their new superpowers together. Their moment is quickly interrupted when Archie receives a phone call about Bingo, who has miraculously healed from his injuries.
As Archie and Mary continue to clean up the Andrews residence, a strange man by the name of Percival Pickens (Chris O’Shea) enters the home. Interested in buying their home as he is moving to Riverdale, Mary seems eager to take Percival up on the offer of selling the house. However, Archie convinces Mary over lunch to instead sell him the house as he will use his unused college fund to buy it from her. While Mary does not understand why Archie wants to stay in Riverdale, she agrees to sell him the house.
After Betty learns from Agent Lin that Glen used their little spat to insinuate that he was sleeping with Betty and things got out of hand, Betty uses the opportunity to change things up in the Riverdale FBI office. When Glen arrives to work one day, he finds that the men who were assigned to the Hiram Lodge case have been reassigned and that Betty is now leading the investigation with her all-female team. Betty also shares that Glen is now under investigation for a sexual harassment case and will also no longer be needed. Later as Glen packs up his belongings and prepares to leave the FBI office, Archie confronts him for his own form of punishment. Glen’s day does not seem to get any better as the final nail in his coffin comes courtesy of TBK (Trash Bag Killer), who strangles him for disrespecting Betty.
