Riverdale – Chapter One Hundred and Seven: In The Fog
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
At the Cooper residence Archie (K.J. Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) convene to discuss what their next step against Percival (Chris O’Shea) should be now that they know his plans. They decide that at the next town meeting they agree to stage a coup, overthrow the current council members, and instate themselves as the new council. Putting a plan together, the four quietly discuss how to put their plan into action while Alice (Mädchen Amick) ducks back out the front door…she has heard everything. Taking this information to Percival, Alice proposes using the absence of the current weather girl on her news station make the current fog rolling in sound a lot more dire than it is. With Alice and Percival’s plan in play, the weather report about the fog sounds a lot scarier than it originally was and citizens of Riverdale are forced to seek shelter until the fog is gone. Archie, Betty, Jughead and Tabitha are forced to cancel their coup until the weather improves.
Betty & Archie
Realizing that her period is two weeks late, Betty is then given news while finishing up at the Riverdale FBI office that one of TBK’s (Trash Bag Killer) hostages has come forward wanting to talk. Later, when Betty heads over to Archie’s house, she sees an ominous figure standing in the front of her house and decides to head over to be with Archie through the back entrance of the Andrew’s residence. While alone Betty shares that her period is late and thinks that she might be pregnant. Archie promises to be there for Betty no matter what happens.
A little while later Betty shares with Archie about TBK and what had happened when he had kept her hostage. During her time with TBK, Betty was forced to dismember a body with TBK and in doing this was released from being a hostage. Because of her ability to cooperate, TBK had felt that Betty had proven herself to him and that the world would be more interesting with her in it. Unfortunately for Betty, this has made her feel damaged and made her question herself. Archie assures Betty that she is not broken and vows that he is all in with Betty on raising a child with her if she is pregnant. It is important to Archie to remain in Riverdale because he wants to raise a family there, as does Betty.
Veronica & Reggie
Seeing how attendance is low at Babylonium due to the fog, Veronica (Camila Mendes) decides to close the casino for the night and stick around for her meeting later. While drinking alone at one of the tables Reggie (Charles Melton) appears with a box of his stuff from his office as he is no longer a partner. Wanting to make amends somehow, Veronica asks him to stick around for a drink and potentially a game of strip poker. As the lights go out, Veronica sees this as a sign and so Reggie stays. They end up hooking up.
While getting dressed Veronica asks Reggie to reconsider giving them another go at their relationship. Reggie agrees to their reconciliation but has one request: Hiram’s picture must come down. Veronica placates Reggie by promising to take it down, but he is not convinced and instead goes off on a rant about being Veronica’s consolation prize as she cannot have Archie. As Veronica tells Reggie about how they are all someone’s consolation prize, Reggie realizes that he is not a priority in Veronica’s life. Where reconciliation was the key, now both Veronica and Reggie decide to break up for good and break the toxic cycle for good and not be like their parents.
Toni, Fangs, and Kevin
Deciding that it’s time to discuss the custody issue, Toni (Vanessa Morgan) approaches Kevin (Casey Cott) and requests that he join her and Fangs (Drew Ray Tanner) for dinner to hash out the situation with Baby Anthony. Still adamant that he does not want Anthony growing up in the Serpent life, Kevin stands his ground and refuses to come. But when Toni immediately throws back Kevin’s cruising ways he changes his mind and agrees to come. Later that night, while waiting for Kevin to arrive, Toni and Fangs discuss what kind of life they want Anthony to have with the Serpents. Fangs is adamant that Anthony should grow up the same way that he and Toni did within the Serpents, a tough lifestyle to prepare him for the world ahead.
Getting ready to head over to dinner with Toni and Fangs, Kevin gets a surprise visitor at Riverdale High: Moose Mason (Cody Kearsley). Moose is now the new P.E. teacher at Riverdale High and is eager to have some time to talk with Kevin. Fortunately for Kevin and Moose, the fog knocks out the power and Kevin texts Fangs that he will be unable to make it due to the fog. Rather than Fangs being understanding, this enrages him. For Kevin and Moose this allows them time to catch up and continue their unfinished business from seasons prior. Their hook up seems to change Kevin’s perspective.
Cheryl & Penelope
Staying put in Thornhill during the fog, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) is surprised to get a knock at the door. Looking through the peephole Penelope (Nathalie Boltt) is on the other side of the door…in a version of a nun’s habit. Cheryl lets Penelope come in, who immediately starts apologizing to Cheryl and explaining how she has found herself at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy in the Himalayas. Before she can take her final vows into sisterhood, Penelope has come to see Cheryl for forgiveness and make amends. Cheryl agrees to let Penelope have dinner and a bath at Thornhill but finds Penelope with the Julian doll that has enslaved Abigail’s soul.
Believing that Penelope has not changed her ways Cheryl knocks out Penelope and ties her up, utilizing her pyrokinetic powers to turn the temperature up in the room to find out why Penelope has come. Penelope sticks to her story and then presents Cheryl with one last peace offering: letters from Heather that she had intercepted. As Heather was Cheryl’s first interest in girls, Cheryl is given the letters and reads through them while asking her mother why she hid them. It is then Penelope admits that her and Cheryl may have more in common than she has ever admitted, and then come the morning she will be gone.
Tabitha & Jughead
Hunkered down at Pop’s Diner during the fog, Jughead asks Tabitha if there’s any chance she can travel back in time and change the outcome of the explosion, restoring his hearing. Assuring Jughead that that moment is a fixed point in time that cannot be changed, Tabitha says she cannot reverse his hearing loss. Jughead goes about his business, but Tabitha’s worried expression is disconcerting. The night continues to take a more dire turn as Jughead overhears Tabitha’s thoughts and believes she is worrying about Pop (Alvin Sanders) dying, followed by the loss of power. Tabitha lights some candles as Jughead goes to work on getting the generator up. As the generator requires some gas, Jughead also lets Tabitha know that he uncovered an old ham radio that may come in handy to get in touch with people. Braving the fog to siphon some gas from their car, Jughead heads out into the fog while Tabitha continues to look worried.
Some time has passed, and Tabitha gets the ham radio working but gets concerned that Jughead has not returned from his excursion to the parking lot. Prepared with shotgun in hand in case anything has happened, Tabitha prepares to head out to the parking lot but is relieved to find Jughead coming in with a full gas can. Once the generator is up and running, Tabitha gets back on the ham radio to alert anyone stuck in the fog to follow the light of the Pop’s sign to safety…. alluding to Pop’s being a beacon of light in the darkness.
Once the fog has lifted, a lot has changed. Feeling a change of heart, Kevin calls Fangs to discuss joint custody but is quickly rebuffed as Fangs is ready to fight for full custody in court. Veronica finally takes down the picture of Hiram in her office, ready for a fresh start. Tabitha shares with Jughead how she lied about the explosion being a fixed point, but that if she tries to change anything Jughead will end up dead….in all 1,384 versions of the narrative as his death is fixed. Percival and Alice’s plan worked as the council minus Tabitha met in secret and dissolved the council, appointing Percival as the mayor of Riverdale. And for Betty and Archie, their future as a potential family hinges on the results of a pregnancy test.
