ABC Family
RJ Mitte – Switched at Birth
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I have a couple of projects that we are looking into. I’m just taking meetings right now. I had a really good meeting a couple weeks ago, but you never know until you are filming it.
Q) With your show “Switched At Birth,” how does your character connect with Daphne?
A) I think their disabilities are unique in their own ways. It has given them an outlook on life and they are just connecting on a whole other level.
Q) When the writers created the character of Campbell with a spinal chord injury, did you imagine he’d have speech issues or have you added that to the character?
A) The character was originally described to me as someone who is cocky and very confident. He just happens to be in this wheelchair. It changed him and he switched over and started learning medicine. It changed his life and he completely tried to find who he was. He just started working in this clinic and it became a part of his life and he can’t imagine being anywhere else.
Q) We get to see this vulnerable and nice side to Campbell. How does that compare to your previous roles?
A) It’s a good switch up and change of pace. I just think people see them as two different characters and see them for how they are. I generally hope for the best and I hope people are enjoying the performance. And I hope people are enjoying the new season of “Switched At Birth.”
Q) What is your favorite aspect of playing Campbell?
A) My favorite aspect of playing Campbell is I enjoy being a part of the set and the crew. It has a really great crew and great set. I’m really lucky to be a part of this and to have a character like that because he is really fun and cool to play. We all enjoy what we’re doing and having a really good time. I think when you have a good character that has personality, that’s all that matters.
Q) What have been some of your most memorable moments from filming?
A) The “Switched At Birth” crew is very welcoming. When I first started about six months ago, they were so welcoming. I met KatieLeclerc several years ago at a Media Access Awards. She was so lovely then and she is still so lovely now. It’s really a pleasure to go from one amazing set to another. It’s truly a genuine set, cast and crew. Everyone on there is there to work and do what they need.
Q) You are a part of social media. What kind of feedback have fans been giving you?
A) They have been enjoying it. I haven’t gotten any bad reviews. I think people have been enjoying it and enjoy watching this tug of war that is happening with Daphne. From what I’m understanding, everyone is loving it and that’s really all you can hope for.
Q) What can you tease is to come for Campbell and his relationship with Daphne in the coming episodes?
A) A lot can happen! There is a little bit of a rivalry between Campbell and Jorge. I think people are going to be interested in seeing how it plays out when we start filming again. Expect the unexpected!
Q) You are a new ambassador for Shriners Hospital. Why was that such an important cause for you to get involved with?
A) I became an ambassador for Shriners because when I was three years old I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. I wouldn’t be who I am without them. I went to Shriners Hospital in Shreveport, LA and was there from age three to when I was a teenager. I still go back there to check myself out and I have a lot of respect for them. I definitely feel it is an important place for so many families and people and it’s one of those places that not many people know about.
Q) Fans will also recognize you from your work on “Breaking Bad.” What legacy do you hope people take away from the show?
A) I hope that what people take away from the show and all shows is that they enjoy it. My biggest thing when I work is that I hope people enjoy it, watch it and rewatch it. We are the best industry in the world. What we do is the most amazing job ever, but sometimes people forget that. At the end of the day, I hope people enjoy what we are doing and what they are watching.
Q) What are your recent guilty pleasures?
A) I just restarted watching “Dexter.” I’m on season six right now. I totally missed the first time I watched it that Vanessa Marano (who plays Bay) was on it! I just discovered that! It’s just a pleasure to work and I love to travel. There is always something!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and “Switched At Birth?”
A) I just hope they enjoy the new ‘Switched At Birth” episodes. We have a lot of fun. Everyone is going to like what they see and I think it’s really going to be a great season.
